The reason why I don't know so much is because I never really got interested into going into rap/hip hop further because of what was on the radio, and blasting from people's car sub woofers. Turned me off, and never gave it a chance again. Close minded, yes.
I hear crappy rock bands on the radio. I'm not going to assume ALL rock is like that.

You're the one stereotyping here.

Evolution can definitely intertwine with religion. :/
But alas, this is not a religious debate.

Re: The Hip-Hop "general" topic

Acid, you can't just say something like "Hip-Hop is terrible and I can write lyrics more complex and metaphorical, BUT THAT'S JUST MY OPINION" and get away with criticizing others for pointing out the stupidity of your statement. You made a blanket, implicative statement and then added a bunch of qualifiers to shield yourself, but you still made the statement.

I doubt you're the authority on lyrical complexity. There are a lot of cultural factors in the meaning of hip-hop lyrics; factors that contribute to a person's connection and understanding of the music. I find that a lot of people who blindly hate the genre often don't actually fully understand the intent behind it. I'm sure there are those who legitimately dislike it on a general scale, but from the sounds of things, you're grouped within the former description.

Finally, I'd like to see some of your astounding lyrics. I'd love to actually see if they're as "damn great" as you claim.

In my opinion hip-hop is suckish at best. My opinion is probably bias because I have only heard songs on the radio. However, out of this I have heard, I dislike the genre greatly. It's too simplistic. Anyone could do it. All you need is garageband and a mic. Just play a generic 4/4 beat, add some synthesizer ****, and add some samples of other various music, then rap. Rapping isn't even hard, it's like talking, singing without pitch. This means even people with no singing talent can do it. Then all you have to do is write some lyrics about shooting people and supermanning dem hoes. I fact, I would like to write a rap song just to prove how easy it is. I think I will.

I'm going to be you for this post.

Punk is just empty, superficial upper-middle class kids trying to add complexity and interest to their mundane and easy lives by complaining about school and their parents while playing simplistic guitar and shouting out of tune. It's always in 4/4, 3/4, or 6/8, and never tries to step out of its simplistic bounds. All punk lyrics sound like they were written by a 6th grader who just found out about girls and swearing, and can't seem to shut up about either.

Skateboarding is also stupid. It's just standing on a board with wheels and flipping around. Anyone could do it. Skaters are generally the least interesting, most empty people on the planet.

Wow, being you is easy. I don't have to think, I just have to write blanket generalizations about a topic I seem to know very little about and sound mildly authoritative by dropping some terms I probably learned in a high school "music appreciation" class.

Re: The Hip-Hop "general" topic

New Deltron album?

This makes my day.

EDIT: And the ignorance I've read in this thread is astounding, almost depressing.

I used to feel the same way about hip-hop. I found some artists that really changed my mind and then I found there was a massive number of artists that made respectable hip-hop and rap, real music with emotion and pain and love and gripping social commentary. I found artists that just make a good beat, something that simply makes you feel good.

Hip-hop has actually saved me. When I was in a dark dark place in my life, there were several songs that reminded me life wasn't so bad and it was all in my hands and that I was worth it. If it weren't for those songs, I could easily have killed myself.

Yeah, I'm spilling my guts on a video game forum, but it saddens me to see how closed minded these people are when hip-hop has been such a positive force in my life.

You haven't heard actually good lyrics.

No, rapping is hard. Think about it; you're talking almost nonstop for blocks of 40 seconds, then maybe doing a chorus, and keeping a good (read: not awkward) rhythm to your speaking (that's what's called flow).

Yeah, it will be a rap song.

A bad rap song.

Just like how half of Fall Out Boy's songs are bad rock songs. Dang, give us a break; it's not like the entire genre has to be good.

Re: The Hip-Hop "general" topic

i used to have that elitist attitude about rap in my younger days. but one day you realize that there's no boundaries with music. it's all subjective. what's beautiful and bliss to one person is noise and nonsense to another.

music doesn't have to be overly complicated to be good. it's senseless to compare songs and say one is better just because it's more complicated and more difficult to play. if the less complicated song was truly written from the heart, does it make it any less worthy than the complicated song?

the musical arrangements in rap typically aren't complicated. and they make no attempt to be complicated. the heart and soul of rap is the rhyming. and rapper out there would completely dominate me in a freestyle rapping contest.

Re: The Hip-Hop "general" topic

Also, musical complexity itself is fairly indecipherable. 4 drum beats with no accompaniment can be "complex" if they're in sequence in a unique and stimulating way, as can a song that has no harmony.

People who think rap is easy, should probably listen to Plastic by Prefuse 73 and then try to record there own version. If it's not perfect it's no good. Because rap's untalented and easy, right?

Yeah, honestly. It's ignorant to say a genre sucks because of famous "artists" in that genre. Just like people into hip hop don't want it to be stereotyped because most of the heard songs are about *****es and hoes, people into rock don't want the genre stereotyped as **** because of monsters like the Jonas Brothers. I used to have the same idea until I realized how utterly stupid it was to think of that.

Tons of people hate Country because they hear songs like She Thinks my Tractor's Sexy. It exists everywhere.

Re: The Hip-Hop "general" topic

arghhh the stupidity in this topic is making my head hurt.

all of you shut up. seriously.

Rapping does take talent, at least, to do it well. It's completely different to singing, but to say it takes less talent than singing is just wrong.

Music you hear on the radio is not representative of that genre. If mainstream radio is your only source of listening to music, you are not allowed to talk about music. Ever.

Music does not have to be complex to be good. Sometimes simple music can actually be the most powerful.
