I've heard Death Magnetic described as the bridge between Justice and the Black album.
I prefer to describe it as a showcase of all of Metallica's different eras/abilities/styles. there's a lot of range from song to song, and even in songs themselves.
The things that made me despise
St. Awful were The drumming style (sounded like Lars was beating pots and trashcans with a mallet- and hello? snare drum?). Also, I didn't like Hetfield's vocals. they were just rhythmic shouting. I could totally feel the lack of inspiration in the lyrics. And there wasn't a guitar solo to be found. Kirk may as well have been on vacation during the recording and any schmoe could have done what he did.
All of these issues, I feel, have been corrected on Death Magnetic, and There is an obvious return to the songwriting style of the earlier "puppets" and "justice" days.
One thing people have to remember though, is that James's voice is not what it once was. all that screaming hurt his voice and he basically had to re-learn how to sing. this lead to an inevitable shift in range and how he uses his voice. Some singers, like the singer for Uriah Heep, can sound the same at 25 and at 55, but others have to evolve.
