Nightwish

Nightwish is a Finnish female-fronted symphonic power metal quintet, formed in 1996 in the town of Kitee, Finland. Nightwish is considered one of the bands responsible for the development and rise in popularity of symphonic metal at the end of the 1990s, as well as the creation of the subgenre symphonic power metal.[1]

I think they are a little better than good and very close to awesome... Ok, maybe awesome.

My favorite songs by them are,

I love their music because they usually start off sounding like an opera or something, and then they kick it off all metal. It's pretty damn awesome. And to add contrast to the music, they add in a female singer to their songs. It's amazing how good it sounds!

Probably one of the calmest songs I've heard them play that has no electric guitar and almost all acoustic and tribal drums is The Islander which is a very sad yet happy song. It makes you feel good every time you play it.

As you probably noticed, I have only a few songs from their old albums with Tarja in it. It's because I didn't really like her singing. No offense to her, her singing was amazingly beautiful and well done! I'm just not fond of the style...

I'll probably check out some of their old songs and newer ones soon, like "Sleeping Sun" and such...

Well, she isn't bad. I don't think she sounds that good in a metal band. Instrument wise they're okay. Better than other stuff I've heard.

I'd replace the singer with a guy, though. Even if he were to sing in a higher pitch.

Last of the Wilds is a great song. It sounds sort of... Irish or something.

My feelings towards Nightwish have changed a bit with the release of Dark Passion Play, which I just did not much care for. Once was a masterpiece of symphonic metal, and I am a huge fan of Tarja's vocals with them. Although I like the new vocalist a lot, I just don't really like the new songs. They sound kind of silly to me. The Poet and the Pendulum definitely turned me off the album, it was way too long and way too aimless and way too... silly.

It could just be that I've moved away from rock music a lot between the release of Once and the release of Dark Passion Play. But I still adore Once. The highlights were Ghost Love Score, which managed to go for just the right amount of time for me, and the surprisingly awesome (and decidedly unmetalish) Kuolema Tekke Taiteilijan.

I've only ever really listened to Once, but I pretty much loved their sound. And I have to agree with Holic here -- I really love Tarja's vocals too. They give the songs a much more operatic, theatrical sound, and I believe it combines well with the nature of the music.

I just don't know how much I like the new singer. =/ She might be a good vocalist, but she doesn't have that unique tinge that Tarja's did. And the new songs sound a bit too... pop-ish for me -- at least the few I've heard on Youtube.

But yeah, I should probably give the new album a try -- and quite possibly the albums before Once.

And I do have to admit, Kuolema Tekke Taiteilijan was unexpectedly good, along with their other slow songs -- such as Higher Than Hope and Creek Mary's Blood. Ghost Love Score is indeed pretty awesome, but... the length does tend to bore me a bit. XD

I just tried listening to their old songs and I think some of them are good, but out of like 3 albums I'd only choose 2 or 4 songs... I'm just not a fan of the type of singing, it's too opera-y for me. The new singer I like because I grew up with those types of singers...

Out of all of the songs I have by them, I really only listen to the ones with Male Choruses or Instrumental. I love the ones with male choruses because they mix the female lead singer's voice with his and it's like an AWESOME combination...

The only good thing about Nightwish these days is Marco Hietala (bass, backing vocals) and if I want to listen to him I listen to Tarot.

I love Nightwish, I really do. Personally, I prefer Anette's voice to Tarja's, but I do agree that their older stuff is probably their best. I love their old songs Gethsemane and Nemo, and Over the Hills and Far Away was just brilliant, and whilst Dark Passion Play is a very good album, it doesn't have the same edge as their older stuff.

I think the best song off Dark Passion Play is Last of the Wilds, it's such a beautiful instrumental piece, pure brilliance.

Not really a fan of them.

Don't really like most of the symphonic metal I've heard, anyway, and Nightwish don't do anything particularly special to be able to change that.

and i sayeth nightwish is boring and bland. They have some interesting songs sometimes but yeah.... One of Suomiland worst.

Same thing happened to me, choose a different file if you are downloading them from a site. That one you have is a demo song file, get the full one...

I find their albums up to "Century Child" enjoyable, but "Once" was far too commercial for my taste, and "Dark Passion Play" was, with the exception of a few tracks, downright generic. Their new singer lacks any of Tarja's distinctive and just sounds...well...poppy and bland.

Finland has produced far better metal bands...Moonsorrow, Ensiferum, Wintersun, etc.

My friends showed me this band today. I've only heard Planet Hell so far, and I am already impressed. Definitely a band worth listening to.

I approve of Nightwish and this thread.
