The Best Kind of Music...

...is the music that can bring a tear to the eye.

I have always enjoyed music that focused more on the overall beauty and emotion than the melodies or "catchy tunes." Soothing, mystical music that evokes a strong sense of emotion, or creates imagery from the music alone in one's mind, is the best kind. I have trouble finding musical genres that concentrate on the beauty of the song alone; as most are very structured and rely on primary, organized melodies. If one knows of genres and artists that do specialize in the type of music I am speaking of, let me know.

Who shares my view on music?

Re: The Best Kind of Music...

I like your sort of Music, not my favorite though. I'm very open about Music though, I don't like to feel tied down to one particular Genre or Emotion.

And sorry, can't help you. I normally just play it If I want to hear it.

A foot tapping, hard driven bass from a hardstyle beat.
Or a Thrashing guitar that rips your face off.
But this thread is gonna create hell.

Re: The Best Kind of Music...

I listen to music that sounds like what was described in the opening post. I also listen to music that has a "catchy tune" that is given as the opposite in the opening post. I don't take the same things away from both, or any of the other many variations and types of music that I listen to, but I enjoy them equally.

Music can only give what you are willing to take away from it, I guess.

A casual aquaintence of mine was a huge music elitist, listening to only the most indie of indie music. I kind of lost touch with him for awhile, and recently have reconnected somewhat. In the few years we hadn't been in touch he had what I guess could be described as a musical epiphany, where he realized that he had denounced mainstream music and pop music and hip-hop and the like for absolutely no real reason. So he started listening to it, discussing it, and enjoying it. In doing so, he compiled a list of lessons he learned, ones that I think are good to keep in mind when thinking about any type of music.

"You get as much as you put in. You can learn about game theory from Big Brother and nothing from Tolstoy. Ashlee Simpson is as valuable as Bob Dylan is as valuable as Broken Social Scene. You just have to taste them with your whole tongue, and wear the right hat.

* **** the canon.
* "Authenticity" is bull****.
* Authorship is a straw-man argument.
* Albums are not, by nature, grander statements of art or purpose than singles.
* The fact that music should be taken seriously doesn't not mean that music should be serious.
* Sad, heavy and intense aren't necessarily good or important
* Happy, light and uplifting aren't necessarily bad or disposable.
* This does not mean that all is equal and relative and that no music is "good" or "bad".

All of the above is both true AND false."

No music before or since has had the musical complexity and emotional rage of the classical tradition of music.

This is what you are looking for.

Re: The Best Kind of Music...

The best kind of music is any music that fits the mood I'm in. This includes and at time excludes artists I don't like or don't care much for.

Its the weaboos that support this music that makes me want to not listen to anything Japanese. Do the Japs a favor and expand your horizon away form The Land of the Rising Sun.

The best kind of music is parody music. I know many people think of Weird Al when the words parody music come to mind, but I'm talking about the truly good stuff, like this.

Ow, my internet feelings.

Seriously, don't spout out crap without any kind of basis. Assuming I only listen to Japanese music is retarded, especially when you've never talked to me. I merely posted those because I felt they matched what the OP mentioned. Both of you do yourselves and all of ZU a favor and find something more productive to do than troll the boards with a magnifying glass looking for the tiniest thing to pounce on and sneer at.

Durrrr~

Re: The Best Kind of Music...

I like music that just oozes rage, sure. I'm not really an angry person but I just love music that's practically leaking with the singer or the writer's sheer fury at whatever the subject of the song is. You can have lyrics that criticize something, or insult someone, but unless the music and the singing actually backs those views up, they're just empty.

Like Bulls On Parade by Rage Against The Machine, to name but one good example. Zack de la Rocha's pissed off that all these weapons manufacturers are exploiting any war to make a profit, and it really comes off in the song.

Tom Araya from Slayer's voice also sounds like he's pouring all his anger into the mic, even though Slayer aren't always that good.

And, well, Ministry's last three studio albums were all criticisms of the Bush administration, and Al Jourgensen's outrage really came off well, both the satirical style of some songs, and the direct accusations contained in others.

I also tend to like music that evokes imagery, or can evoke imagery, of a kind of last stand or final battle, even if it's not necessarily Power Metal. Like the song Battle Hymn by Manowar, or For Those About To Rock by AC/DC. They're often full of emotions as well.

But you kept posting more even when nobody else had commented on the first one. I never said anything about you listening to Japanese music, if I did I would be a hypocrite, because I do on occasion too. And considering the heavy listening I was doing for years, I'm sure I know much more about it than anyone on these forums.

Relax.

Introspective lyrics with a slow or mid tempo and distorted guitars that puts life into its futile and unrelentingly hostile perspective.
