Bandai Entertainment Confirms Gurren Lagann on Sci Fi Channel (Updated) - Anime News Network

At California's FanimeCon event on Saturday, the anime distributor Bandai Entertainment has confirmed that Gainax's Gurren Lagann science-fiction anime series will run on America's Sci Fi Channel, starting on July 28. The series will run at two episodes a week through October.

Good news: for those of us with Sci-Fi, WE GET TO SEE TTGL

Bad news: since it will be on Sci-Fi, there's a very good chance it will be butchered up, like Sci-fi does with all their anime

I never liked Sci-fi. For the reason you already stated plus the fact that their scheduling is just pure ****.

Whatever the case is, at least it's airing on TV.

I just read the synopsis. This anime sounds pretty good.

I like sci fi anime the best. Like Ghost In The Shell and whatnots.

I've always found TTGL one of those animes who tried to be appealing, but failed however.

TTGL is love, though I'm a bit wary of how good (or bad) the dub will be.

At least it'll be on TV though.

It worries me that they're not even saying who the VA's are

and I read somewhere on another site that they only recently began dubbing (like this month) and are actually still looking for cast members.

How bad is the editing? Can we expect such iconic lines like "Who the hell do you think I am?" to be turned into something shrewd like "Who the heck do you think I am?" Or do we get robbed of the more blunt pieces of innuendo?



Just as long as they have someone other than Johnny Young Bosch play as Kamina (as I've heard), all will be well in the land of the dubs.

They've been airing ani-mondays since 06/07 (I can't remember which year) in which every monday* from 11pm - 1am they show anime. Currently airing is Macross Plus and Tokko, and they just finished up Noein and Tactics as well.

*except this monday which is an enterprise marathon

They don't edit out language (unless it's like the f word) and they allow partial nudity. What they do is chop it up due to the fact that they have "time constraints" aka an ass load of commercials. They can take a 20-25 min. show and just chop it up to about...16-19 min. because of commercials.

Granted, the only thing I've ever tuned into Sci-Fi for was reruns of Quantum Leap and Heroes . . . I must now add TGGL to that short list.

JYB is a competent VA, he just shouldn't be asked to voice a character who shows a wide range of emotion (poor Lelouch). If I hear his bored voice say the lines "Don't believe in yourself. Believe in me, who believes in you!" - I swear, I will help you in the act of beheading the charismatic drone.

Bosch isn't deep enough to do Lelouch (though he hasn't done that bad so far), and he certainly isn't the right fit for someone like Kamina. Kamina is the most influential character in TTGL, so he if no one else deserves a good voice.

But thinking back on the Japanese version and then thinking to some of the well known English voice actors/actresses...we're pretty screwed. I could tolerate Bosch doing older Simon, but I have this awful feeling that they'll cast Kate Higgins or Karen Strassman as Yoko and Stephanie Sheh as Nia. I can see Quinton Flynn doing a decent job as Viral for some reason though.

It's like something out of a bad jRPG. But since its Gurren Lagann,

It seriously pisses me off how he sounds EXACTLY the same as Ichigo and Lelouch

I swear if he sounds just like those two...I might just have to hunt him down, drug him up, and install a voice changer in his vocal chords >.>

^We'll prolly get Bosch's Renten voice for younger Rosiuu, and then he'll use his Ichigo/Lulu voice for the older version - That's pretty much the way he's doing it for Tales of Symphonia 2.

I missed the Sci-fi debut, but the first two dubbed eps are already up on the tubes already, so no loss there. My first impression is that Kamina's VA needs a shot of testosterone when going into "I'm giving a ridiculous yet manly speech" mode. Otherwise, he sounds good, especially near the end of ep 2.

Question (if anyones really paying attention to this) to those of you who watched it subbed and uncut: how much is sci-fi really editing out?

I absolutely hate anime but for some reason I like this show. Nobody will ever be able to figure that out. Here's my thoughts eight episodes in.

Pros:
-Execution has been amazing. Pacing is pretty much optimal. Style is off the charts. The show is so ridiculous you just roll with it. That's helped by the brisk pacing, which does wonders to prevent you from trying to make any sense of this.
-For the most part, great animation and special effects. I love the way they handle explosions, debris and particles - Much of the same stuff we saw in FLCL which was great.
-A nice dash of self-parody (Practically all of the protagonists' attacks fall under this I think).
-Episode 5 had some great things going on, particularly with "The Lottery."
-Ballsy as hell: See episode 8. It's clear there won't be any compromises in this show.
-Overall plot and setting are fairly interesting.
-Kyle Hebert has been great as Kamina.
-Yoko is one of the better female leads, excessive fan service notwithstanding.

Cons:
-Fast-tracked dub and everything that goes with it.
-Michelle Ruff, who has all the feeling of someone being forced to read aloud in English class.
-Yuri Lowenthal is also giving a dishwater dull performance.
-A cringe-worthy, cliched "hot springs" episode (In case anyone might forget this is from Japan, I guess).
-Sometimes a few too many anime "gags" and mannerisms for my tastes.
-Underdeveloped enemies pale in contrast with the colorful and interesting main cast.
-Huge, show-stopping production hiccup in episode 4.
-Leeron, Gimmy and Darry are characters the show could do without (So far). Steven Blum, though demonstrating his flexibility, feels like wasted talent as Leeron.
-Having to watch this on the worst channel on cable: Sci-Fi.

Thats because it's made by the same guys who made FLCL


...and Leeron is funny. He's one of my favs.

I know - That's why I mentioned it. Apparently Gainax has done a lot in between, but that's all I have to draw off of. FLCL was another one of those shows that I really should have hated, but for whatever reason didn't.

On a side note regarding episode 5, if you haven't read Shirley Jackson's The Lottery, it might not be a bad idea.
