When Space Westerns Got To It's Peak When I used to be a kid, I went through a lot of phases that had a lot of exaggerated goals. For example, when I was 8 years old and I set my eyes on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers show I wanted to be a power ranger. Which would never happen of course, and then by some other influence I wanted to be a ninja, and then a pirate. All of chosen careers was from stories and TV of course since I always hated reality when I was a kid.
When I got older and more "mature", I started getting into westerns, and I was really intrigued by it. Face to face with your enemy, revolver at your side and kill the other bum before he shoots you with speed and accuracy. That was awesome, While west america had Gunfights with honor, Japan had sword fights also with honor. That's why I also love Samurai and western time gunslingers.
Which brings me to the popular series Outlaw Star. A gunfighter for the captain, and a samurai chick. To this day Outlaw Star is my fav. anime above all else because it brought me a Space western, something that is not done much now.
Hope came when the show Firefly came out, which is what this thread is mainly about. I watched the movie Serenity first and then brought the series after the movie took my western loving self in. The movie and the show is the most realistic space adventure I've seen. For example I always hated how space movies allowed sounds in their space fights because that is impossible to do when space has no air, no pressure, which makes sound unable to happen. Like crappy Star Wars...annoying lasers and explosions out in space it always bother me but people said that it would be lame if they didn't do that. Outlaw star did that too but it was cool enough for me to ignore it.
In Firefly they didn't do that cheesy crap, and it was still a cool show. None of that crazy sound effects in space, it would always go quiet when it showed their space sequencies which is theme I really liked, REALISTIC. No crappy designed aliens and wierd space crap. Joss Whedon director of Angel and Buffy two shows I really hated got on my good side with this show, with colorful characters and heavey western and chinese theme, and good picture and CGI, I wanted to see more but thanks to gay FOX network they cancelled it.
Anyway that show is, to me of course, what brought Space Western to it's peak. Even the new Battlestar Galactica took a theme from the show Firefly (the no Sound in space them). But Battlestar is still a stupid show. Anyway, If I could be like the character Mal from Firefly, Butch Cassidy, or Gene Starwind from Outlaw Star, I'd choose that lifestyle living on the edge anyday over a life behind a desk making someone else rich.
