Re: Gimli

OMG! Who said anybody hated Gimli? I never heard of that saying. I quite enjoy some of his comic relief quotes, (although sometimes it goes to far) Gimli is an awsome character. I mean, come on, the dwarf helps Aragorn too. He fights with him in just about every battle. And you gotta have guts to swing an axe almost twice your size around.

"He was shaking...cuz he's got my axe EMBEDED in his nervous system!"

I frankly, like Gimli. He is one of my other favorite characters. Although I like all of them really. But you gotta love Merry. And Pippin for that matter too.

Re: Gimli

In the books, he is a well respected member of a dying race. In the movie, he's a gimmick.
We actually hate Peter Jackson, (director of LOTR movies) for making Gimli a gimmick.

He's not the best LoTR chracter but nobody on ZU said they absoulutley hated him! Where did you pull this out of? Personally I think he's necessary for the plot and comic relief...also, I find him quite loveable.

Re: Gimli

Gimli was ruined in the movies.

Comic relif? In the Lord of the Rings? Bound to be bad. It was just sad.

Who are this "every one" who hate him? "Every one" must be an important person, for you to bother about his oppinion.

I agree with Ozz on this occation, excpet the part about hating Peter Jackson.

Gimli son of Gloin

I have never heard anyone say they hated Gimli. There was comic relief all over the books, in the movies it was shown a little more in Gimli than in the books because they wanted to show the friendship between him and Legolas. In the books, J.R.R. Tolkien made their friendship evident by words and detail... this is sometimes hard to portray in movies. In the movie, Gimli, Legolas, and Aragorn were the mixed triad of what was left of the broken fellowship. Comedy was used to show the bind of the friendship of a Dwarf, an Elven Prince, and a ranger from the North and heir to the Throne of Gondor. Without using this as a tool, especially for Gimli, it would also have been too depressing of a movie.

Ya i agree with what he said. Tolkien is able to use his imagination with words and such, that Gimli just becomes such a dynamic character, as well as legolas. If you think about it, hardly any of the characters were static at all.

The movies comic relife got cheezy...specially that 'box' part in the Two Towers. But then again, i read the books before i saw the movies, so i favor the novels more.

I wish they would have talked more about his family in the books though. You only meet Gloin in "The Council of Elrond" And i HAAAAATED that chapter with a passion. I like history, but not fifty billion pages of random babbling...ugh.

Re: Gimli

Unless I have a twisted sense of humour, Tolkein uses Gimli and Legolas in tandem for comic relief in the books, though not as often as in the movies.

The biggest problem with his character (and many others) in the movies is that they are not fully developped -- that would take another 12 hours. So motives are questionable and you don't really understand the character without the help of the books.

Very true, I have the leather-bound books, and the Director's cut DVD's that adds to the movies what shouldn't have been taken away. One part, Gimli and Legolas have a drinking contest and Gimli actually *ahem* breaks wind... but though it was quite hilarious, it would have taken from the drama. Too much it would have been in the movies. Anyway, the books still seemed more serious, as J.R.R. Tolkien got very detailed with his words.

Re: Gimli

Even though the movies took away a lot of his depth in the books, I thought Gimli was still portrayed quite well. Brave and big-hearted...it's hard to imagine him as an unpopular character.

Re: Gimli

I have never read the books and so naturally, my impression was that he was comic relief. In the movies, he isn't terribly heroic by the noble and gallntry book but he's a nice character. Legolas and Aragorn were simply boring, undeveloped characters in my opinion and I didn't see much of the Dwarf/Elf conflict terribly much. I don't hate him though, I find that he's one of the few in the movies that actually has a different personality.
