[Movie] Dark Shadows

I'm surprised nobody else started a topic on this.

So, is anyone a fan of the original 1960's series? Or when NBC revived it in the 90's?

Anyways, Tim burton has decided to make the soap opera drama, into a comedy. Looks pretty good, but naturally I'm a Johnny Depp fan.

Summary of the original series.

Personally, i dont really think turning a super-serious soap opera concept into a comedy worked that well. As a stand alone movie, the Burton Dark Shadows is alright. It portrays a lot of kitsch that Burton is known for and has some great imagery and funny moments. In association with the original series? Yeah it didnt work for me. Johnny Depp's Barnabas was just not as interesting as Jonathan Frid's Barnabas. It was almost like they were totally different characters completely. The only character in the film that seemed to be really on par with the original character was Elizabeth. Everyone else just seemed to be a funhouse mirrored version of themselves. I...didnt really care for that to be honest. (omg what did Burton do to Carolyn! omg omg...i was so not amused.) But Elizabeth's original storyline was like, non-existent in the film. :/
Victoria was done alright though. Only just.

The original series was much more serious in tone. It did have some funny moments but not many from what i remember. I liked the original series a lot. Of course, i wasnt around during its original airing (lol) but my mum was and she was addicted! I saw a lot of episodes back in the day during syndication. The reboot? I dont remember it. It must have been rather bad if that was the case.

I watched a few episodes of the original series, and I also wondered why he turned it into a comedy. It is a strange idea to flip it like that, but I think it might be good. (Haven't got around to seeing it just yet!)

I just remember it being a soap opera and it was all dramatic with a hint of romance, and Barnabas was a very intruiging[sp?] character. I also remember David could see him, and his dad being all "Who are you talking to?" lol.

I have yet to watch more of the show. My mom's a big fan of it, and my aunt is too.

My mother loved the Dark Shadows television show, and refuses to see the film because she doesn't like how Tim Burton made it campy. I, for one, don't really get why this choice was made, as something like Dark Shadows was right up Burton's alley. Judging from the trailer, I think they could have probably made a great, dark, spooky film. This movie kind of reminds me of Batman Forever, although I thought Batman Forever was a good movie.

Yeah totes. I saw that Burton was making it and i saw some early production photos and it looked like it was supposed to: Dark, gothic, and serious in tone. It had Burton's flavor to it with the costume designs and stuff too. So when i saw the extended trailers, i got very confused and a bit dismayed. I was like "wut..." Because really, Burton could have done SO MUCH AWESOME with this and just...it just didnt happen that way. The original Dark Shadows wasnt so much scary as it was more intriguing. Horror was present but not like...in your face. (and the horror in the series is kinda campy by todays standards)

Hey fun fact! There was a film already made from the series. House of Dark Shadows was pretty cool actually. And a bit scarier than the series. It has like, all of the cast too.

Do you people think that Burton has been deteriorating lately? Or is this one of those moments in which a normally good filmmaker is hitting a wall?

No i think youre on to something. For me, his last truly spectacular film was Big Fish.

^Personally I think its Sweeney Todd. Big Fish is still a FANTASTIC movie, don't get me wrong, its one of my personal favorites

I'd be pretty sad if he really is going into that territory though. Once great filmmaker who has deteriorated

I don't remember the last Burton production I liked. I had no idea Burton was even a part of Big Fish, because I didn't pay any attention to the people who worked on films and such when it came out.
