Remakes love them or hate them or wish they leave them alone.

Okay so as everyone knows lately hollywood has been making alot of remakes of 80's movies for instance: Total Recall , Friday the Thirteenth, Nightmare on Elm Street, Footloose,Tron and the list goes on. My question is what do you guys and girls think of them. I personally think yes most of the remake are well done but on the other hand I am also like why can't they just leave them alone that's my childhood your messing with. Please let me know what you guys think I'm really intreseted in your guys and girls thoughts.

It's interesting to see other people's take on them. It's not like it takes away anything from my enjoyment of previous movies.

Re: Remakes love them or hate them or wish they leave them alone.

I hate when it's an uninspired special effects showcase with no real arc or message that obviously just has the name of the original for marketability and brand recognition. I don't mind remakes when they feel inspired. A good example of this is John Carpenter's The Thing, my favorite movie of all time, which is a remake of the classic The Thing from Another World. John Carpenter's The Thing is a movie with an atmosphere and a clear story arc, something where the people involved in the creation of this movie obviously cared and had a vision.

then you got the new The Thing movie with ramona flowers, which has none of the tone or suspense or horror of the old movie - it's kind of hard to even spot a story arc, honestly. There's not much going on in this movie beyond the visual effects (which for the record are not as impressive and are not going to age as well as the visual effects from John Carpenter's version). When you take a step back from this one, it's kind of hard not to see it as an uninspired cashgrab.

Re: Remakes love them or hate them or wish they leave them alone.

Tron: Legacy wasnt a remake, it was a sequel.

The problem with remakes is they arent done with the same spirit which made the original film so memorable. Sure its all fancy and updated but wheres the love? The last decent remake i saw was Fright Night. There were things in that remake that made more sense than the original. (like the character of Amy and i liked that incarnation of Evil Ed loads more.) But Jerry Dandridge wasnt right. (of course Colin Farrel is pants but...) The original Jerry was more suave and just cooler. And of course Vincent. I love David Tennant but hes no Roddy McDowall. But overall, the film was enjoyable.

Im not the biggest fan of remakes. Sometimes it better to just leave well enough alone.

Total recall's been remade? ♥♥♥♥.
If they're well made fine but if it's a remake like planet of the apes, no.
leave it alone.

Planet of the Apes (or Rise of the Planet of the Apes) again wasnt a remake. It was a prequel. Guys...pay attention.

Not the one I'm talking about, but that movie sucked, may I add.
The one by Tim Burton. Sorry, should have added that.

Re: Remakes love them or hate them or wish they leave them alone.

well technically speaking the new The Thing movie was a prequel too, but with a movie that exploits the imagery and brand-name of the old movie to such an extent I'm comfortable calling it a remake.

---------- Post added at 03:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:33 PM ----------

but yeah, Rise is totes a prequel in my book.

Re: Remakes love them or hate them or wish they leave them alone.

Not all remakes are terrible. The Thing has been mentioned many times. Also, Scarface was a remake and it's one of my favorite gangster movies. The remake of Nosferatu was pretty incredible too. I hear Fright Night was pretty good. Saying remakes are inherently bad is a falsity.

Oh yeah. That one was probably Burton's worst movie. It did kinda smell. Ill give you that. Nearly forgot all about it....

Rise was good though! Dont know what yer talking about.

The Thing remake/midquel whatever you want to call it wasnt fantastic and didnt match the older one at all. But i did enjoy it due to the creepy effects and Mary Elizabeth Winstead. ( )

There are some films that needed to be remade because they sucked. Hulk comes to mind. The Ed Norton version was way better. (Oh i hope someone remakes Queen of the Damned properly. hnngh.)

Occasionally I'll run into good remakes. Good ones are Peter Jackson's King Kong, even if its a little too long. Then Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds. I have no idea why people hate this one.

Probably has to do with the tripods not vaporizing the annoying girl in the first 30 minutes, among other things.

Remakes are ok in my book only when they are more than just a CGI-fest with a recognizable name, which sadly tends to happen more often than not.

Re: Remakes love them or hate them or wish they leave them alone.

Can we also discuss/rant about old movies being revived for 3D? (or leave this for a seperate thread?)

Because like, come on, these are just cash-grabs right here.

Re: Remakes love them or hate them or wish they leave them alone.

I dislike them when they are something like The Nutty Professor style of remake. But for the most part I am quite alright with them, especially if they get other people interested in watching movies. Cos I like older movies and don't care what year one comes out but to some the year is important.

Are reboots considered remakes? I would have thought of Star Trek as a reboot not a remake, but if its the other case then Christopher Nolan made awesome Batman remakes, and others should take note.

Yeah, good point on Star Trek there. I don't think it really follows an established plot from any older Star Trek movies, so I guess reboot is more appropriate.

Re: Remakes love them or hate them or wish they leave them alone.

I'm okay with "remakes" of movies that are based on different source materials, like books or comics. Since they're interpreting the same source material, interpreting it multiple times is interesting because you can see someone else's take on it.

As for original movies, I'm not so sure I'm for it. If the movie was written to be a movie and didn't come from some other source material, I feel like it should stand on its own as its own work of art and doesn't need to be reinterpreted.

Re: Remakes love them or hate them or wish they leave them alone.

Depends on the movies. If the originals were completely amazing but could use more style then I don't always mind. I don't watch all the remakes, it really depends on how much I liked the original. And in some cases the remakes are remade with their own style and twist completely. A retelling of the story in a totally different way. A good example of this is the Planet of the Ape movies. I'm really loving the newer ones and at the same time I love the old was just the same.
