Yes it's possible for there to be more airbenders. Aang and Katara had Tenzin, who is an airbender despite only having 1 airbending parent. And I don't think his wife is an airbender but his current 3 children are all airbenders. So there's always a chance an airbender parent will have an airbender child.

And there might be a new little airbender coming sooooon!

Oh, when Korra said "babybending" in the last episode, I instantly thought of people chucking babies all over the place. My friend likes to think babybending is doing the hoo-ha.

Wrong!
The lion turtle indicates you must place your hands on their forehead and their heart.

Amon only places his hand on their forehead, which interestingly is where the Light chakra is. The Light chakra is blocked by illusion, and what illusion is better than the illusion that he can take your bending away?

Then what does that tell us about Amon and the people he's "un-bended"?

Is it possible that all non-benders are potential Energy Benders (or whatever Amon is doing)?

I think I read somewhere in this thread that Toph wasn't born an Earth Bender but learned how to do with with the giant moles. Another way to think of it is that Toph was always an Earthbender however her parents were always overprotective (so something like earth bending, or any martial arts would be too dangerous for their blind, rich daughter).

Re: The Legend of Korra - Book 4 debuts Oct. 3rd!

Bryke have said in an interview that everyone has the potential to be a bender, as bending is down to how spiritual someone is.
Which is why all Air Nomads were air benders, their culture is so spiritual it's pretty much impossible for there to be a non-bender born!
They didn't want it to be genetic, although what kind of bender you are does depend on who your parents were.

It's possible that this will play a role in the story later on. Or maybe not, it might just stay as a bit of avatar lore. Who knows!

Tenzin, said only the Avatar has the ability to strip people of their bending ability, thus Energy Bend, ergo I never believe Amon had the ability to Energy Bend.

I highly doubt he's an energy bender.
He may be just a normal bender. Or a really good chi blocker. Or both. But he's no energy bender.

He said only the Avatar has ever had that ability. Not only the Avatar can have thta ability. Not that I think Amon has been energy bending unless they retconned what energy bending looks like.

So I must ask; what about Bumi (Aang and Katara's son). He was born a non-bender, so could he have the potential to become one?

This ish is so confusing.

Well see I don't like the "everyone has the potential to be a bender" thing because it takes even more wind out of Amon's sails.

Re: The Legend of Korra - Book 4 debuts Oct. 3rd!

Concidering a giant turtle taught Aang it's safe to say it wasn't avatar-exclusive, just it happened to be exclusive to the avatar. Just like how the avatar wasn't the only person who could communicate with the spirit world--Iroh was specificly mentioned as having a spirit journey--but it sure came a lot easier.

Remember in the story of Omashu that both Oma and Shu both learned earthbending from watching the badger moles. Likewise, firebenders worked out firebending from the dragons--apparently a trippy experience for them if Zuko is any indicator--and the push/pull of the tides taught waterbenders. Airbenders (somehow) figured out airbending by watching the sky bisons.
Actually, I'd like to complain about that.
  1. the things fly somehow, which airbenders had no idea how to do
  2. Sky bison, at best, twiddled their fingers and flapped their tails
  3. No part of the air bender mentality seems to, in any way, be based at all on the giant flying cows
Despite all that though they magically worked it out. That's (apparently) why they can make air wheels and have built-in climate control.

The concept behind energy or chibending is entirely of changing the base physical and mental core of a person. One could make the point that Amon isn't even chiblocking per-se but simply using acupressure to terminate the end of the flow of chi through the body, thereby preventing one from extending it beyond themselves third-eye-style in order to bend elements. If that were the case, with proper training one could remove the restriction.

Chibending would require not only you tamper with one's being but expose your own in order to do so. This was the reason for the struggle, and why the avatar spirit has a certain advantage at these things. Mere accupressure-based martial arts, of which traditional and modern chiblocking are a part, could never do this irrepairably or without side-effects. In particular, under traditional chinese medicine, (to plagarize wildly) physical dysfunctions of this chakra are brain tumors, strokes, blindness, deafness, seizures, panic, depression and confusion.

Please note how a certain pro bending champ suffered wild depression after having his ability stripped. Slow, semi-slurred speach, depressed attitude, sleeplessness, etc. Ozai didn't however, and was still rather fiesty for a crazy loon locked away in the depths of prison by his own throne-usurping son. He certainly was sharp as a tack.

Re: The Legend of Korra - Book 4 debuts Oct. 3rd!

Giant Lion-Turtle: "A true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost..
A true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being harmed..
Since beginning less time darkness thrives in the void, but always yields to purifying light..

In the era before the Avatar, we bent not the elements, but the energy within ourselves. To bend another's energy, your own spirit must be unbendable, or you will be corrupted and destroyed."

So if what Amon is doing is similar to Energy Bending, then he must have learned it from someone. Aang learned it from the Giant Lion-Turtle, it's possible that Amon learned it from a spirit.

I wonder if what the GLT said is not only a message for Aang, but a message to all future Avatars if they listen to that message (be it in a flashback, or if Aang himself decides to tell it).

Imagine a world where there weren't any Element Benders, but only Energy Benders...what purpose or even, what skills could Energy Benders do (or apply on each other)? I can sorta think of it like the Hyuuga family from Naruto (where they can open or close chakra points with their gentle fist technique), but not much use if that wasn't the case.

-BGS

Edit: PS: When Korra eventually learns how to go into the Spirit World, I honestly hope she gets the opportunity to meet Princess Yue (and gives Korra a special message to relay to Sokka. Yes I know Sokka might still be with Suki, but a message from the afterlife is pretty big).

If you look, the leader of the Equalists places his hand on the back of his victims' neck, as seen in the third episode. What's interesting, though, is the name of this pressure point:

It's called Amon.

Oh yeah, I never thought of that. What DID the ancients do with energy-bending if the other elements never existed?

Also, I think you mean episode 8.
