TRON

Greetings, Programs! Welcome to the thread where the TRON fans of ZU unite! Are you an old fan of the original classic? Did you grow up on lightcycles and disc wars? Or maybe you're from the Legacy era, having recently experienced the dazzling world of the Grid since last December when Trons long-awaited sequel was released by Disney in IMAX 3D. Either way, it's undeniable that this amazing franchise continues to inspire fans around the world to this day. So far I know of a few Users here are on ZU who are Tron fans, but I'm excited to find many more! I have big plans for this movement. I'm going to create a Tron Social Group here very soon for discussions on everything from Daft Punk's brilliant score to Jay Maynard, the famous "Tron Guy" from the internet. For now, let the discussions begin here! Did you know that exactly one week from today is the release date of...
  • TRON: Legacy Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / Digital Copy
  • TRON: The Original Classic (Special Edition) Blu-ray / DVD
  • TRON: R3C0NF1GUR3D Remix Album

I'm very excited for all of that! Another thing to look forward to is the upcoming cartoon series, Tron: Uprising, which will follow a young Program named Beck (voiced by Elijah Wood) as he is trained by Tron to start a revolution against the reign of Clu 2. It is scheduled to air in Summer of 2012, so there is still quite some time to kill before we get to see that, but it looks really good so far. All of this and more will receive their own discussions in the social group once I get around to that.

The rest is up to you, Users! Tell us about how you became a Tron fan or what sort of novelty items you have! I will share my collection later. Oh! I almost forgot. This week, don't forget to vote for Tron in the nominee categories of the 2011 MTV Movie Awards! Tron is nominated in the following:
  • BEST FIGHT - Garrett Hedlund vs. Anis Cheurfa
  • BEST FIGHT - Jeff Bridges vs. Jeff Bridges
  • BEST VILLAIN - Jeff Bridges
  • BEST LINE FROM A MOVIE - Jeff Bridges "You're really ruining my Zen thing." (The quote is inaccurate, but still deserves recognition.)
  • BEST FEMALE BREAKOUT STAR - Olivia Wilde
  • BEST MALE BREAKOUT STAR - Garret Hedlund
  • BEST MOVIE - TRON: Legacy

Also look for Tron at the 37th Saturn Awards this June. Nominations for that include Best Science Fiction Film, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Music, Best Costume, Best Production Design and Best Special Effects! The film was an awesome and gorgeous piece of work so it's great to see it begin to receive the recognition it deserves.

End of line.

Re: TRON

Although I had played several games based on the bikes before, I watched the first movie for the first time literally 10 minutes before seeing the new one, and I ****ing loved it (both of them) in more than one way. I can't consider myself a fan though, but I definitely enjoy every minute of Tron.

Something I will always be sure of: Special effects for the disks's movement are better on the first movie. The trail they leave behind is addictive.

Why can't you consider yourself a fan?

You have a point. I had almost forgotten about the bright trail of light that discs had in the original. They probably changed that in Legacy because of the new disc design being empty in the middle so you could wrap your fingers around it, unlike the original discs that were solid like a Frisbee. I like them both! Although I might be just a little bit partial toward Legacy's design because I'm an even bigger fan of that movie's visuals.

Re: TRON

Legacy is going to look beautiful on Blu-ray.

I am a huge fan of TRON. It's one of the treasures of the eighties that seems to not get much attention, at least until Legacy. What's funny pre-Legacy no one I talked to had seen TRON, and then when Legacy was about to be released everyone wanted to see the original, and the 20th anniversary DVD (which I happen to own) was going on eBay from upwards of $400 and I only paid $20 for it back in 04.

Legacy was a great movie. It was a great reinvention of the grid, and the nostalgic value for me was great. In combination with a soundtrack and cameo by Daft Punk, you can say I had a nerdgasm in the theater seats.

Nice! I'm glad to be finding more fans of the films. I still own the original classic on VHS, which a few of my friends have become quite jealous of since they first heard of Tron from seeing Legacy.

Indeed it was! I was the same way. Did you get a chance to see the film in IMAX 3D? That experience was totally unreal. I've never seen anything else like it before. Bio-digital jazz, man! Thank you, Disney, Steven Lisberger, Joseph Kosinski, and all the others who worked on the film and helped make it what it was. I loved it!

Re: TRON

Tron Legacy should have won every award in the Academy Awards. Even if it wasn't relevant to the movie, it still should have won them. I still can't effin believe that it wasn't even NOMINATED for Best Visual Effects!

Of course. I payed top dollar for the experience and my head exploded midway through the movie. (in the good way)

That's what I thought! Even if the category didn't even fit, Legacy should have taken them all home. It's disappointing, but doesn't affect the film the way I see it. In fact, I think that Tron is too cool for the awards.

Ha ha nice! That's exactly how I felt. I saw it again with a friend at a conventional theater and it just wasn't the same! The Recognizers didn't rumble my seat.

Re: TRON

Back to your previous question... Tron was actually the first movie I ever saw when my family moved to America when I was just five years old, and I've cherished it ever since. So when I found out about the sequel, I freaked and P.O'd all my friends because for one year, it was all I would ever talk about. I've got all the comics, all the games, all the music, and am going to buy the Ultimate Tron Legacy Edition Blu-Ray/DVD release that comes with the Blu-Ray copy of the original Tron movie.

I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!

You've got one inspiring history with Tron, man! I was highly anticipating Legacy before its release as well, but after experiencing it in IMAX 3D last January, I've been in the process of teeing off all my friends with Tron lingo and slight "fanboyism" ever since.

So what system do you have Evolution for? And did you beat it?

Yes! Sadly I have until my birthday on the 19th to wait. And even sadder is the fact that I don't have a Blu-ray player or HDTV, nor do I have any 3D hookups. Should I ever get any of those, however, I will be very glad that I have the Tron Legacy 5-disc collector's edition. And at least I'll have the DVD and the Digital Copy.

Re: TRON

I saw the original TRON for the first time last month. It was a bit better than I expected, and also easier on the eyes. It's amazingly different from its (superior) sequel, though. The original Tron was Inception meets Toy Story but inside a computer, in its concept. Tron: Legacy, on the other hand, was harder to describe. I loved the sequel's visuals, but the original's are still interesting, and it's mindblowing that in 1983 special effects were that advanced.

Still, in every way, especially soundtrack-wise, Legacy blows it out of the water.

That's kinda sad . Oh well, at least you'll be getting the 5-disc special edition.

In the mean time, I just got 100% of all the trophies on Tron Evolution. After hours of frustrated shouting, I finally beat the game on insane difficulty!!!

Re: TRON

Watched it yesterday. It was OK?

I've been saying that it had a good beginning but transitioned to a boring and almost predictable ending. I think it also relies too much on the viewer's knowledge of the original TRON movie? Like I didn't know what they were going on about at different times.
Special effects were great, and all the glossy floors and neon lights-- awesome stuff.

Your comment has just made you open for immediate de-resolution!

In all honesty though, you should definetely watch the first one.

I can't see how the original Tron was anything like Inception or Toy Story. Would you care to elaborate? By the way, Tron was made long before either of those two movies were even thought of. In fact, the brains behind Pixar have noted that without Tron, they would have never gotten into animation and created movies like Toy Story.

'82, actually. Not to mention that the production and animation was in the works as early as 1978.

Agreed! But for what it's worth, I still love the original classic.

I don't think that it relied on what the original movie set up at all. I know a few people who, like you, saw Legacy without having seen Tron before and were still able to understand it. I think it's safe to say that Legacy stands up on its own, you just have to pay attention to the dialog, specifically what they say in the beginning of the movie. Because, honestly, most of your questions probably wouldn't be answered if you went and watched the original movie now, which is why I think that Legacy stands alone for the most part. That's not to say you shouldn't check out the old Tron though, it is still a great movie even today!

Re: TRON

The DVD has this strange option to watch the movie while a narrator explains whats going on. Anyone that's confused can check that out and get an understanding of what's going on.
