Pretty effin metal in here, eh? - Official Metal/Punk Thread
Any metal-heads in ZU? when I say metal, I am talking the WHOLE spectrum. Things that could barely be considered metal (Three Days Grace/Since October) to the heaviest screaming progressive stuff out there (Chelsea Grin/As They Sleep). I guess this would be general metal discussion. What's your favorite band? You like screaming with your metal? Can you scream? and just some other stuff about it. Trends, bands that suck, etc.
To kick things off, I guess I want to ask those questions I listed.
Band: close race. It's either The Devil Wears Prada, We Came as Romans, or War of Ages.
I LOVE SCREAMING IN MY MUSIC. I can scream myself, but I'm still developing it.
Anyways....
EDIT: I don't want a debate over "this is technically hardcore" or "thats metal core". YOU understand what I mean. It's one thing if someone says they like linkin park, which carries rap elements, but, at least in their older days, they maintained metal elements. Now if someone comes and starts talking about Lil' Wayne....that's different.
Re: Pretty effin metal in here, eh? - Official Metal/Punk Thread
Well considering no one else really bothered to make one...I guess it is.
My pet peeve with linkin park is you can have a really REALLY good song that combines the rap and metal, but then sometimes it just doesnt really seem to work, at least in my opinion.
Re: Pretty effin metal in here, eh? - Official Metal/Punk Thread
We've had lots of metal threads that are all just debates about what is metal and what isn't but no thread where people can just talk about metal and share what they are into or listening to at the moment and whatnot.
My favourite bands that fall under the "heavy" spectrum of metal, hardcore, etc are Isis, Converge, and The Bronx. Which runs the gamut of sludge, metalcore and hardcore.
I am a fan of harsh vocals, not necessarily screaming.
I wonder if this should/could be a punk thread as well

As I said, I think that would fall under general metal, whereas "punk" may not always have metal. Anyways, it's the same thing with the "metal" and "hardcore" crap. We all know what we mean.
I gotta agree, it's not just screaming, but gravely vocals. Kinda like Avenged Sevenfold. I swear Afterlife is one of the best songs ever.

I listened to all manner of early hardcore when I was writing a paper on punk and hardcore. I don't dislike it, but it's not something I actively listen to. Fugazi is about as early as I get for bands in my punk/hardcore library.
Re: Pretty effin metal in here, eh? - Official Metal/Punk Thread
Cryptic Slaughter absolutely destroys.
I am a metalhead if you didnt know it yet but i also like classic hardcore, crust etc. Manilla Road is my all time favorite band not because they released the best album ever but because they never released an album id rather lower than a 7/10 and id rate the average manilla road album in the 9/10 area. No other band manages to be of so consistent high quality imho.

Original poster fails at identifying metal bands. Might as well listen to Brokencyde.
I really like a pretty wide variety of things... I've never been much into the punkier and hardcore side of things, but I do like me some Isis from time to time, maybe the occasional grindcore. I tend to gravitate towards extreme metal, mostly death metal, but I'm also a huge fan of black metal, folk metal, Viking metal, and avant-garde stuff like Solefald. Definitely less into traditional heavy metal than I used to be, but I can still enjoy some Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Megadeth and so on as well. There's a few bands I enjoy even though I'm not the biggest fans of their respective genres... for example, The Lord Weird Slough Feg is pretty amazing even though I'm not really a huge USPM fan, and I'm also a closet Blind Guardian and Persuader fan, even though I find most European power metal to be cheesy and irritating.
Right now, Solefald's 2010 album is on my list of things to pick up, whatever Kekal has in store, as well as the new Dordeduh EP and their eventual album. There's few bands that really push the boundaries of what metal can be in such convincing, original and enjoyable ways, and those two easily top the list for me right now.
Also, next person who says metal is about being "brutal" and "effin badass" is going to get banned. Just saying.

Thanks...lol I gotta say I was kinda drawing a blank when I posted this. Long day lol I is suck.
Another thing I thought I would address is something a friend asked me...I found it quite humorous.
"is screaming in metal a white person thing? Like rap being black people's?"
xD
That's what he said. I'm not saying I agree. While I don't listen to rap, I'm sure there are plenty of white rappers who do well besides eminem. And I know there are some really good screamers who are black (killswitch engage), but I did see his point that most screamers tend to be white...I may be wrong, but he did have a small element of truth. Maybe I need to branch out of my hardcore/grindcore tree, but most screamers seem to be white.

Metal is dominated by whites largely due to its American and European roots. There are a number of notable black musicians in metal, including several members of Suffocation, and the vocalist of thrash band Hirax, but it's not a very common thing, I imagine simply due to the way that blacks in North America tend to be socialised into other forms of music and subcultures.
Re: Pretty effin metal in here, eh? - Official Metal/Punk Thread
I think I like things from all over metal. I only recently got out of listening to a lot of "core" music when I listened to some more of the more traditionally metallic stuff out there on tomcat_ha and eribear's recommendation. After listening to a lot of these bands, when I go back to most core music it seems pretty sterile to me. Also, listening to the Slaughter of the Soul album revealed to me that a lot metalcore bands I liked - whether they realized it or not - sounded like At the Gates clones.
I can still enjoy some of the bands though; Between the Buried and Me, Veil of Maya, and The Fall of Troy in particular. Some of my favorite albums of all time are the early The Fall of Troy albums, and they have a very corey edge to their sound.
as for the metal genre, I'm pretty new, but I have a lot of favorites already. The non-arrogantly technical A Celebration of Guilt was the first real metal album I got into. It sort of opened the doors to metal for me, and for that it will always be a favorite of mine, even if from time to time the layering of the vocals kind of irks me.
anyway. Lately I've been getting into thrash. Coroner's R.I.P. was more or less my gateway into legitimately thrashy thrash bands.

Actually black are seemingly the only people who are not really into metal. Metal is pretty much a global movement happening everywhere from chile to japan. While most famous bands are indeed either european or american because of the lack of resources in the other countries/areas there have been quite a few very notable bands coming from these less obvious countries.
There are also a lot of hispanics in the american metal scene.
Re: Pretty effin metal in here, eh? - Official Metal/Punk Thread
Well there's also Derrick Green, the current vocalist of Sepultura, and Benji Webbbe of Skindred. That I know of.
As for me, I'd say a good deal of what I listen to falls within traditional metal with bands like Iron Maiden and Megadeth still being among my favourites. I do dabble in some progressive metal like Dream Theatre though I think I probably need to branch out from there (Devin Townsend maybe?), and occasionally some power metal like Stratovarius and Blind Guardian.
What I like most out of newer metal acts however, is symphonic metal with bands like Within Temptation and Nightwish being among my favourites. I've also recently started venturing into death metal, particularly symphonic death metal, though I've yet to find a band I'd call myself an avid fan of. If anybody has any suggestions, they're welcome. XD
Re: Pretty effin metal in here, eh? - Official Metal/Punk Thread
I love metal but not its scene.
Anyway, i like all sorts really. Death Metal is my favorite subgenre. I always found the heavy chugging riffs and the growling vocals with the gory lyrics to be very charming. Opeth takes so much from the progressive angle and puts it with some awesome growling (and clean) vocals for an interesting mix. Morbid Angel. Love. I also like stuff like Nevermore.
