Re: Pretty effin metal in here, eh? - Official Metal/Punk Thread

yeah. okay metalcore with a surprisingly technical lead guitarist (though I wouldn't call him versatile.) and christian lyrical themes. I used to listen to them when I was into the genre more, but they are not one of the bands I revisit, honestly I would call them pretty stale.

---------- Post added at 09:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:03 PM ----------

though I do like they don't have a lot of breakdowns.

---------- Post added at 09:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:04 PM ----------

don't get me wrong though. I think Oh, Sleeper clearly has more creative and interesting stuff going on than a lot of other bands, metalcore or otherwise, I just don't like to listen to them that much.

These are my thoughts in order:
  1. Oh, look, they started with a breakdown.
  2. That breakdown led into... another breakdown?
  3. These vocals sure are whiny.
  4. Putting a lead guitar playing a minor scale on top of your breakdown does not stop it from being a breakdown.
  5. Hey look, drums that kind of sound like d-beat! For a sec I was almost excited.
  6. Same old part, still not interesting the second time around.
  7. DEAR GOD THIS CLEAN SINGING IS LIKE EAR CANCER
  8. I hope you like hearing this verse section, because you'll hear it about 5 times in this song.
  9. Did they just like, copy-paste all the parts together in ProTools? Where's the movement and the progression?
  10. Wait, it's over? I don't think there was a single riff in this entire song.

Oh, Sleeper is a talented group of guys. One need only look up their guitar and drum technique videos on YouTube to see how good they are at what they do. I thought that most of the songs off their last two concept albums were solid and offered plenty of substance, not only musically but also lyrics-wise. I'd recommend "The Finisher" and "Son of the Morning".

They're fine musicians. That doesn't mean they can't make annoying and/or bad music. Ever tried listening to a Steve Vai album?

And now time for something badass:

arch enemy is like kid music covered by a metal band. Jesus christs its immensely boring to play arch enemy songs yourself.

influenced by classic(1800's) style guitar playing.

Arch Enemy is alright and I respect the super tech solo thing and the sexy female vocalist (whom I would totally bone for the record bro five bros) but I would consider it entry level death metal, because it's one of those bands that you start to recognize as being this strange coldly manufactured amalgamation of all the cliches of melodic death metal once you have like, saturated in the genre more.

Re: Pretty effin metal in here, eh? - Official Metal/Punk Thread

Arch Enemy are catchy and melodic but completely vacuous. They basically have two songs, two riffs, two tempos that they play over and over. Their gimmick of having a female vocalist? Yeah, whatever, she's attractive, but there are way more talented female vocalists in metal who do way, way more brutal vocals. It's just poppy mainstream stuff for teenage fans, nothing more.

That said, being a fan of Arch Enemy will no doubt lead you to better music - Edge of Sanity, early In Flames, At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity, Dissection, and so on. As much as I can say they're utterly mediocre, they are still metal and still valuable as a gateway.

Speaking of female vocalists, has anyone ever listened to Abnormality?

I think they're pretty good, especially that EP. They're supposed to be releasing a full length album soon, and I hope they continue with that sound. Their earlier work was a lot different and not as good, imo. What do you guys think?

This is actually really cool. It reminds me of a female-fronted Slayer.

Re: Pretty effin metal in here, eh? - Official Metal/Punk Thread

One of my favourite Metal bands, Moonspell, is soon releasing a new album. I actually have to say, I'm surprised by this album sonically, as it is their heaviest work yet. Its actually a dual-album. One half--Alpha Noir--is heavy, and the other half--Omega White--is more of a mellow Heavy Metal sound with a goth-metal sort of style.

They've released but two songs as of now, one from each half. Lickanthrope and White Skies. But they've played Alpha Noir's title track live:

I love KoRn. I don't care what anybody says. Hang me if you must, but I love them.

Anyway's, does anybody here listen to suicidal black metal? This stuff is amazing:
