[Music] DubSTEP

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South East London. Its overall sound has been described as "tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals".

The earliest dubstep releases date back to 1998 and were darker, more experimental, instrumental dub remixes of 2-step garage tracks attempting to incorporate the funky elements of breakbeat, or the dark elements of drum and bass into 2-step, which featured B-sides of single releases. In 2001, this and other strains of dark garage music began to be showcased and promoted at London's night club Forward (sometimes also referred to as FWD>>), which went on to be considerably influential to the development of dubstep. The term "dubstep" in reference to a genre of music began to be used by around 2002, by which time stylistic trends used in creating these remixes started to become more noticeable and distinct from 2-step and grime.

I like stuff like Excision and Chrispy, if that is classified as true dubstep or some crazy off-spring, I don't know. It's all wubwubwub to me.

It's not technically dubstub, but then neither are Skrillex or Rusko. There's more energy, way more wobble, and they're not nearly as complex as Mala, Digital Mystics, Benga, etc...

I've heard it called 'brostep', but I think that's far too condescending. It may not be 'pure', but it's sort of the 'pop' of the genre.

That said, stuff like Cookie Monsta and Mt. Eden... I can't stand. It's just so boring. Cookie Monsta is just a simple drum track with random wobble thrown on top, and Mt. Eden just sounds so tacked together, like they build the entire track as, more or less an electronica influenced pop song, and then throw wobble on top so they can call it "dubstep".

I'm assuming it's called dubstep because it is highly catchy and uh.. "make me want to dance in a club" music? I really enjoyed the Changes track. The Mala people (or person) seem to be leading the pack here, from all the samples you listed. The pacing in building it all up was done masterfully.

Skrillex is by far my fave. Other than that, check this

It's called dubstep because it's essentially 2-step dub.

That's part of why some of the more wobble centric stuff isn't considered dubstep by many. Most don't have even a vague dub sound.

The Mala people (or person) seem to be leading the pack here, from all the samples you listed. The pacing in building it all up was done masterfully.

Yeah, Mala is amazing. He's half of Digital Mystikz, the other half being Coki.

One of my roommates is really into dubstep and he's actually the one that I got me into it. Some dubstep makes my brain a bit chaotic and I get restless/irritated after listening to it for a while - obviously because it's dance music and not music you should normally listen to while writing/reading/trying to concentrate.

I've been listening to a lot of Kode 9 and Zomby. Also Burial, but some people say that he's technically not dubstep, but whatevs.

The love the dubstep bass, and I often rape my subwoofer with such music! Also, I can totally beatbox the dubstep sound, say whhhaaat.

Same here ! Dubstep is awesome to begin with but add a subwoofer and you've got yourself a good old eargasm haha i'm more into the earlier stuff e.g Skream - Midnight Request Line (check it out ) but the more robotic sounding stuff is still ace but like you said can get abit too much after a while.

I really like this genre! However, the only two artists in my library that can barely fit into it are Burial and James Blake (which isn't pure dubstep, I guess).

Dubstep songs like these make the charts. The problem is that it sounds like practically every other modern dub song I've heard or listened to (at least the stuff that makes it to the charts).

I was never really into dubstep. I'm more of a house guy (progressive, techno, etc.). Don't get me wrong, not all dubstep is bad - I just can't get into the whole genre for reasons previously mentioned.

This song from Deadmau5 is actually one of the few dubstep songs I like:

Highly recommend everyone buy James Blake's self-titled LP, stat.

not a huge fan of listening to it privately, but it makes a good soundtrack for parties, and I enjoy seeing the acts live.

I guess I have to be in the right atmosphere.

For those who don't know who Mr. Weebl is, he's a cartoon animator making funny and catchy short vids. Not all of them are like this but I thought of sharing this one here.

i like skrillex, chrispy, doctor p, and i've heard some great remixes but other than that i don't know much about the genre.

I'm not much of a fan, but I typically enjoy listening when I do. There's much better electronic styles out there, in my opinion.

Hella fun to produce though.
