Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

Just to pass the time during my open periods at school, I am reading Forrest Gump. It's pretty interesting when I compare it to the movie, and how it's incredbly different.

I get you. I read that book a few years ago. It's kind of like the History Channel in that's it's interesting backstory, but kinda boring except for some parts that are cool.

Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

Just started reading C.S Lewis' Space Trilogy. Finished the first book "Out of the Silent Planet' and now onto the second, "Perelandra" and then onto "That Hideous Strength." Read the first one in one day, fantastic book.

After that I'm going to try and read Lewis' The Screwtape Letters' and 'Mere Christianity.'

Other books I recommend are Watership Down and The Plague Dogs, both by Richard Adams.

and First Blood, by David Morrell.

I just started reading painting mona lisa. Mostly because it has sex and violence.
(My friend recommended it to me)

Currently reading part of Dante's Inferno. Pretty interesting read! Definitely makes me think about, you know, life and stuff.

Books you like to read.

I have not read much for a while, but, I hope to pick back up on it, soon.

Books I like:

1984
...Of Mice and Men
The Pearl
Flowers for Algernon
Brave New World
The Three Musketeers
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time
The Great Gatsby
To Kill a Mockingbird
Macbeth
The Taming of the Shrew
A Midsummer Night's Dream
The Odyssey
Shalimar the Clown
(Though, I'll admit, I had a rough time comprehending the author who purposely tricks the reader)
and many more to list
All of my lower education textbooks

Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

I'm finally filling the hole in my pop culture knowledge by reading the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. I'm about halfway through The Restaurant at the End of the Universe and will probably take a break after that to read A Clash of Kings before finishing off the series.

So far they're funny, but I'm not really engaged with what is going on in the story.

After the first book, the story really isn't the main focus of any of the books, which is a bit unfortunate. Would have helped to tie them together a bit more.

Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

I've been reading various books, trying to prepare myself for fatherhood! Quite interesting reads too...

Other than those, I've not really read anything for a while. I've been house hunting, so haven't had much time for reading. Plus, I haven't got any books that I haven't read before.

Re-reading the whole Sam Vimes sub-series of the DISCWORLD saga. They are some of the best books ever written, in my opinion. Anybody with even a vague interest in fantasy HAS to read them.

Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

Last thing I read was One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey for English class.

Once my break starts I'll maybe resume East of Eden by John Steinbeck. About halfway through after a year off putting it on and off. It's practically a biography of a fictional character and then some.

I just finished the Blue Demon by David Hewson. I thought it was one of the best in his series. And now i'm about to start in Game of Thrones

Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

Currently reading Xenocide by Orson Scott Card. I liked Ender's Game and Speaker, but I'm not sure how much I'll enjoy this one.

Also reading Calvin's Institutes, but very, very slowly (have been for three years -- I tend to just ignore it for months at a time).

Also the Life of St. Cuthbert. It's pretty interesting. I like medieval texts, there really isn't anything quite like the middle ages. Might pick up Lord of the Rings again, as I want to get through it finally.

Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

I bought this because I've always been a fan of Joel Stein's columns - those of you who have a Time magazine subscription have probably read a few. His columns are always well written, and strike a chord between dry wit and sincerity that I've always enjoyed. That quality in his writing holds up in his book.

The book chronicles Joel's mission to become a manlier man for the sake of his newborn son. He does all the manly things that he missed out in his childhood in the hopes of gaining the masculinity he lacks due to the absence of those activities in his upbringing; he goes on a boy scout camping trip, spends a weekend with firemen, learns to throw a baseball. I think part of why this was such an enjoyable read for me is because it's so easy to find yourself in many of the chapters. It isn't going to be a classic, but it's been awhile since I've had this kind of fun reading a book.

Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

I'm currently reading The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. A friend of mine was reading them, and he's letting me borrow them. And let me tell you, they're amazing. They are full of action, drama, romance, philosophy, and all of that. Anyone else read them? And if you haven't you should.

I am on the third book of the clone codes series. I am finding the last book hard to understand but i'm trying. I also loved the percy jackson and the secrets of the immortal nicholas flamel series.
