Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

I'm trying to get back into reading. I used to read a lot when I was younger. While I only really have like six or seven collections of books, I'd read and re-read them all the time.

I recently finished the Saga of Larten Crepsley by Darren Shan, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm now re-reading his The Thin Executioner. I've also (re)ordered the books from the Magyk series, which I enjoyed a lot when I was younger, plus A Song of Ice and Fire's box set, but it's delayed until the 12th of July now ;____________________;

are they any books that anyone would like to recommend me? I've got a few from Holden somewhere in my VMs which should keep me going for a short while, but does anyone here have anything they consider a "must read"?

Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

Erm, I'll ignore my random attack to suggest my favourite literary works, because they would not be welcome.

I find Peter S. Beagle's The Last Unicorn a really fantastic book with deep things to say. It's one of the best fantasy books I have ever read and I have read a lot, haha, given that it's my favourite genre.

Sooo, I warmly suggest it to anyone. :>

Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

I'm attempting to read the Lord of the Rings series. After watching the movies about a thousand times, I think it's time I read them. It's going OK, but I barely make the time to read it. I recently finished the Hobbit too.

Finally got around to reading Wuthering Heights. Once you get past the names which make it hard to tell who is who (an experience the Brontes may have faced) then it's a great novel with a narrative that holds up very well once it properly kicks off. Dunno what to read after I've finished though.

Silmarillion is staring at me from my bookshelf. I want to finish, I really do, but it's just so hard to get through. It's very interesting, but by no means entertaining.

Just to pass the time during my open periods at school, I am reading Forrest Gump. It's pretty interesting when I compare it to the movie, and how it's incredbly different.

I get you. I read that book a few years ago. It's kind of like the History Channel in that's it's interesting backstory, but kinda boring except for some parts that are cool.

Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

Just started reading C.S Lewis' Space Trilogy. Finished the first book "Out of the Silent Planet' and now onto the second, "Perelandra" and then onto "That Hideous Strength." Read the first one in one day, fantastic book.

After that I'm going to try and read Lewis' The Screwtape Letters' and 'Mere Christianity.'

Other books I recommend are Watership Down and The Plague Dogs, both by Richard Adams.

and First Blood, by David Morrell.

Currently reading part of Dante's Inferno. Pretty interesting read! Definitely makes me think about, you know, life and stuff.

Books you like to read.

I have not read much for a while, but, I hope to pick back up on it, soon.

Books I like:

1984
...Of Mice and Men
The Pearl
Flowers for Algernon
Brave New World
The Three Musketeers
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time
The Great Gatsby
To Kill a Mockingbird
Macbeth
The Taming of the Shrew
A Midsummer Night's Dream
The Odyssey
Shalimar the Clown
(Though, I'll admit, I had a rough time comprehending the author who purposely tricks the reader)
and many more to list
All of my lower education textbooks

Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

I'm finally filling the hole in my pop culture knowledge by reading the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. I'm about halfway through The Restaurant at the End of the Universe and will probably take a break after that to read A Clash of Kings before finishing off the series.

So far they're funny, but I'm not really engaged with what is going on in the story.

After the first book, the story really isn't the main focus of any of the books, which is a bit unfortunate. Would have helped to tie them together a bit more.

Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

I've been reading various books, trying to prepare myself for fatherhood! Quite interesting reads too...

Other than those, I've not really read anything for a while. I've been house hunting, so haven't had much time for reading. Plus, I haven't got any books that I haven't read before.

Re-reading the whole Sam Vimes sub-series of the DISCWORLD saga. They are some of the best books ever written, in my opinion. Anybody with even a vague interest in fantasy HAS to read them.

Re: What Are You Reading? - Official Literature Thread

Last thing I read was One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey for English class.

Once my break starts I'll maybe resume East of Eden by John Steinbeck. About halfway through after a year off putting it on and off. It's practically a biography of a fictional character and then some.

I just finished the Blue Demon by David Hewson. I thought it was one of the best in his series. And now i'm about to start in Game of Thrones
