Re: Comics Chit-Chat Thread: Wednesday is New Comic Book Day!

I've completely stopped buying individual issues for any ongoing or miniseries, from now on I'm only buying oneshots or event issues like annuals or milestones (ex. Batman #700, Wonder Woman #600)

So I'm just sticking to trades and graphic novels now, I much prefer it that way. I recently grabbed The Flash: Rebirth, Batman and Robin Volume 1, and Gigantic. Now my upcoming list includes-

Blackest Night/Green Lantern: Blackest Night
Usagi Yojimbo: Yokai
Batman and Robin Volume 2
Magic the Gathering: Path of the Planeswalker
Northlanders: The Plague Widow
Captain America: Reborn
Superman Earth One (cannot wait for this)

The only ongoing series I plan to buying single issues of are The Brave and the Bold, and Dark Horse's upcoming Turok reboot, but I may stop with the latter past the first arc, as I'd rather get the trades of that.

Re: Comics Chit-Chat Thread: Wednesday is New Comic Book Day!

Captain America: Reborn is pretty sweet. It even has a bit of Jeph Loeb redemption for good measure. Of course, that was before he did Ultimatum so yeah.

I'm actually thinking I might check out the Earth One series as well, since it is pretty much the DC version of Ultimate Marvel, and that is how I started reading their books again. At least going to check it out.

My pull list for this week:

Avengers Academy #02 (Marvel, potential drop)
Chew #12 (Image, even though I'm so behind on this series. I love it though)
Daytripper #08 (Vertigo, first read every week it comes out, soo good)
Invincible Iron Man #28 (Marvel, was so good, now less so, potential drop)
New Mutants #15 (Marvel, breakout X-book of the year)
Amazing Spider-Man #637 (Marvel, conclusion to Grim Hunt story arc)
Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #12 (Marvel, still good after reboot)
X-Men: Second Coming #02 (Marvel, conclusion to the Second Coming arc, finally)

First look at the full cast of the upcoming AMC adaptation of Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead:

This has the potential to be one of the best zombie stories ever told.

Re: Comics Chit-Chat Thread: Wednesday is New Comic Book Day!

So I picked up my copy of Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour today, did you?

I finished a few hours ago and it was a great final issue. The whole series is fantastic, one of my favourite comics ever.

Tomorrow is new comic book day already and I haven't even gotten through all of last week's. May have to wait a few days before getting into this weeks.

Re: Comics Chit-Chat Thread: Wednesday is New Comic Book Day!

I've been trying to go into comics lately by checking out some trades from my library. So far I've read:

Ultimate Spider-Man book 1: I liked it, a fun read and I'm looking forward to see how this ends. I didn't like the different take on the Green Goblin, but whatever. "Face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot..."

Old Man Logan
: Another fun read with some really crazy scenes. I really loved the idea of a broken down Wolverine. "They broke me bub."

Superman Red Son
: Awesome read, I really loved this What if scenario. "Why don't you just put the whole world in a bottle Superman?"

Batman Year One: Very good read, I liked how Batman's story was told, but Gordon's story really stole the show. Wasn't a fan of Catwomans origin story. " He's big. Green Beret training. It's been fifteen years since I had to take out a Green Beret. Even so, he deserves a handicap."

Batman the Dark Knight Returns: Currently reading, meh so far.

Next up I'm going to read Watchmen, and Y the Last Man since I hear those are good. Any recommendations? Or advice on where to jump in on the current run of Spider-Man and Batman?

Great series, I'd say stick with this one. Ultimate Spider-Man is basically the biggest reason why I read comics now.

I liked Old Man Logan, but it was so hyped for me I don't think it was possible for it to live up to it.

While I think it is worth reading, I have never been a big fan of DKR.

Y: The Last Man is excellent, and I definitely recommend that.

If you are looking to just read the main Spider-Man book, I'd say read One More Day and then just keep going. After OMD there's only been one main spidey book, so it is pretty easy to follow, and has some really great arcs as well.

What do you do to protect your comic books?

Okay I'm a comic book addict and I love comics and now tell me what you do to protect your comic books from damage and sun damage.

I use sheet protecters and put them on the binder with two comic books side by side in the sheet protecters so what do you do to protect yours?

Usually I get one of those Silver Age plastic sheets and put my comics in their and store them in my closet.

What I do is just keep them in the safest place possible in my house, I really don't use anything to protect my comics, I guess I am just one to keep my things in pwoper condition.

Re: Comics Chit-Chat Thread: Wednesday is New Comic Book Day!

I don't really have to worry about protecting my comics all that much since I buy by the volume rather than by the issue.
I don't live close enough to a comic book shop to keep up with individual issues, so I just pick up the bound volumes at the book store.
I've become quite fond of The Darkness comics. I have to say, I enjoy them a lot more than Witchblade.
Sandman is another favorite, as well as Lucifer, Y:The Last man, Hellboy, Spawn, Transmetropolitan, and of course Batman. I also enjoy a large majority of what Vertigo puts out. :p

Re: Comics Chit-Chat Thread: Wednesday is New Comic Book Day!

Since I usually end up donating my individual issues to libraries and whatnot, I don't particularly worry about protecting them. Single issues are great for when you want to keep up with a storyline, but they aren't very practical otherwise.

I loved Watchmen, The Dark Knight Returns, Akira, and Domu. But I think Ranxerox is the best in the art department.

Re: Comics Chit-Chat Thread: Wednesday is New Comic Book Day!

Hey Nolan, did you ever get a chance to read any of The Immortal Iron Fist? Obviously I was way behind on the news, but it got cancelled after it's 27th issue a year ago. I heard it was a really good series, and I've been wanting to look into it for a while.

Speaking of Marvel, they may be well on their way to redeeming themselves regarding Thor. It's still way too early to say for sure, but their new series Thor: The Mighty Avenger, may end up being just as good as JMS's run on the primary volume. If it stays as good as its been for the first three issues, I may start buying it every month, especially since The Brave and the Bold is going to be after this month thanks to JMS working on that lame Wonder Woman reboot.

Re: Comics Chit-Chat Thread: Wednesday is New Comic Book Day!

I've only just gotten into comics so I tend to buy just the book that has multiple comics in one story line.

I've really liked Superman: Red Son, Batman: The Killing Joke, And Ultimate Spiderman vol 1.

Anyone have a recommendation for a good comic?

No, but I was so intrigued by Shadowland that I grabbed Diggle's run on Daredevil so I could get the backstory to it, and the whole thing has made me want to get into more street-level Marvel. Plus its Brubaker and Fraction for the first half and that just sounds awesome. So I'll probably check it out sometime soon.

If you liked Ultimate Spider-Man, check out Runaways and Ultimate X-Men up to volume 13 or so. If you like those then we can get into the nitty-gritty of other on-going types.

Re: Comics Chit-Chat Thread: Wednesday is New Comic Book Day!

Nolan, my brother showed me the first couple issues of the runaways. It's ****ed up!

I actually am waiting for a couple comics to get here right now. B&R vol 1, Joker and Man Who Laughs. I've been looking everywhere for Death in the Family and Dark Victory though. I can't find them and it's driving me nuts. The only copy of DitF I found was the hard cover, and it was $40, which I'm not paying.

I'm also keeping up on return of bruce wayne. Got the first two issues, trying to find a store that has 3 and 4 in stock.

Other than those I have a **** load of other graphic novels and collections. Mostly DC, but a few Marvels as well.

Yeah, Dark Victory I'm pretty sure is out of print in everything but hardback, so finding it cheap is going to be difficult if not impossible.
