Seriously? No discussion about James Cameron's Avatar?

Jesus, the movie that is said to revolutionize the film industry and have the most realistic CGI to date is coming out in less than two weeks, and no one is hyped at all? Or at least not showing it? Seriously, even in 2D this movie looks ****ing incredible:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utZ-aE0ybXw

Speaking of dimensions, the entire film was shot in 3d, using a camera that the director/writer invented himself. It is a handheld camera that captures the actors themselves as their cgi characters, filmed in the virtual world. This means that every motion that the actor makes will be transferred onto the character, allowing for natural kinetics and true human emotion.

Extended Trailer:

I really want to see this, but I agree that I was a little disappointed in the trailer. I'm hoping they are only making us think it will go a certain way and will have some twist but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Especially since we don't know the ending, and for all we know it could be very controversial and unexpected. Plus, we don't know who lives or dies, what characters do, if the Colonel drinks Columbian or Brazilian coffee in his gunship, etc.

They come in blazing with guns/robotic tanks, and they still harbor the idea that "You think you own whatever land you land on". And because the humans have better technology and are able to travel intergalactically, that they are better than the Na'vi. No, Link, no Navi

I want to see the movie, plus there are already talks about there being a sequel to this one. What would the second movie be? Rumors say that it could either be exploring this new planet of Pandora even more, or the humans travel to another planet.

Wow, that movie looks bad ass. I never bothered to watch a trailer, but I have known about the movie for a while now. I'm pretty excited to see the movie after watching that preview.

Also, I love how the aliens happen to speak english. Go figure.

Ty: Aliens have been speaking english since star trek.

Anyway the movie looks really good. It does seem like pocahontas in space but I definately want to see it. Another thing, DAMN THAT IS THE BEST CGI I HAVE EVER SEEN! I have never seen a movie where the CGI characters look so...real and actually have true facial expressions.

That's what happens in most movies. In Star Wars a lot of aliens know how to speak english. In movies with multiple languages you might see (let's say) Native Americans speak in english, however when they are in the same room as pilgrims, then they start speaking their own tongue and not being able to understand a word of the english that's spoken from the explorers. It's just a very common Hollywood tool to use in movies to make the audience feel better (and not having to read subtitles for half the movie). And who knows, maybe the same thing will be used in Avatar.

Actually, in the movie it is quite a long time after first contact. Since then the researchers taught some of them, or they learned from listening, English. It's not that uncommon. The aliens in District 9 learned how to understand English and the humans learned to understand their language. The only reason I could see for the Aliens in that not speaking English is because their anatomy prevented it. They had mandibles for christ's sake. The same sort of thing happens all throughout history. So it's not that farfetched that they would know English. Furthermore, if I remember right only a few of the Na'Vi actually know the language. It's really only tribe leaders and Neytiri from what I can see. They all speak their own language for most of the film. Hell, they made an entire language and culture just for them. So it's not Hollywood being cheap, it's what actually happens in the film. And from what I can see, there probably won't even be subtitles for their language.

I'm very much looking forward to seing it =)
I'm going to see it on the premiere here in Norway. 18th of December. To celebrate being finished with exams, and before we go to visit relatives.

I think it looks amazing, and I have a feeling that I will love the moral :p

Re: Seriously? No discussion about James Cameron's Avatar?

Question: If we have fast enough travel to reach earth-like planets, why is that guy still disabled? I mean, come on, he should at least have robot legs by then. I'm willing to suspend my belief enough to believe that we haven't assimilated into a borg-like collective yet, but come on, we still have cripples? That's just outrageous.

The use of English speaking non-English speakers may be used in movies a lot, but serious sci-fi outings tend to try to explain something like this away- especially since it's easy to explain in a sci-fi environment.

Re: Seriously? No discussion about James Cameron's Avatar?

Looks like some liberal propaganda about the "evils" of Iraq!

I kid of course, this movie looks pretty damn good and looks more like a big "****-you" to the 19th century idea of imperialism.

Re: Seriously? No discussion about James Cameron's Avatar?

So what are you guys going to see it in? Imax 3d? Imax Digital? RealD? Dolby 3d? 2d (lol)?

I'm going to see it in RealD, since the only other form of 3d around my area is Imax and that one is:

A. A lie-max theater

B. full of artifacts and ghosting

C. funky glasses

Plus there is a RealD theater two minutes from my house =)

I would go see it in Dolby3d, but the closest theater with that is about a 10 hour drive away.

8bit: In the original star trek a translator was never mentioned. The aliens just happened to speak English from what I can gather.

Re: Seriously? No discussion about James Cameron's Avatar?

Bravo: But why would it work if the alien they encountered spoke a language the translator didn't recognize? Many times they found new species yet they could understand them despite the translator not having encountered this language before.

Bravo: Okay I guess that makes more sense. I just don't recall it being sufficiently explained. I guess I must have missed the line in that one episode.

I may go see it, but that's only because it has mechs in it. Other than the mechs I have no interest at all in it, and I really don't like how the aliens look.
