Welcome to the results thread for the september contest.

We had three great entries this month.

The next contest will be over two months as it is very late in the month and not enough time to have a contest this month ;-;

I did it in Photoshop. I never really use Photoshop a whole lot, but I gave it a shot this time and I'm quite happy with the result. xD

I had the idea of an angler fish type thing from the beginning and sketched a few things in with the mouse until I found something I liked. I drew on a black background and wanted to give the impression it was sort of coming out of the darkness, since Angler fish live in the darkest parts of the ocean (though I imagined that this guy lives in a deep dark cave somewhere). I also wanted to make its legs look sort of crystalline, since that seemed... cave-like, so I outlined parts in a brighter pink and experimented with darker and brighter shades of pink to help them look more transluscent. I used a lot of transparent colors, which helps him look slightly see-through. I also did some smudging and stuff around the eyes to make it look like there's a layer of skin covering them, but I'm not sure how well that turned out.

Mostly, though, I was a little lost while drawing it since I'm not entirely used to Photoshop, but it was to fun to make regardless. xD

It looked as if a tonne of super impressive edits or drawing went into it. Knowing it was simple is kinda even more awesome

I was afraid that this contest was too small to work with, but it happened with results in the end.

These were all really beautiful. I love how the entries can be so radically different in unique, yet still be for the same theme. ^-^ Thanks for sharing, guys!

Alrighty well I have the idea for the next theme: Inner Journeys.

The pilgrims made a great voyage overseas to settle in a new land, but this was only an exterior. This theme is about an artistic representation of your own personal journey through life - the voyage of your soul.

Maybe the past few years have been a great tribulation for you, and just now you are reaching the light at the end of the tunnel. Or maybe your life is just a downward spiral of depression and despair, and you want to show a sailing ship being sucked down a giant whirlpool.

Whatever the case may be, it could show some sort of transport like a car, ship, or plane, to show what sort of journey(s) your life has taken thus far. So this is a rather personal art project.

Now you do not have to share what circumstances your composition represents (this is not a writing contest after all), so you will have to leave the audience guessing at what you are trying to symbolize in your art, or what is the meaning behind the imagery that you chose.

You can look at works by Heironymous Bosch, William Blake and Salvatore Dali for inspiration of needed. I think this will be fun!

Well other than saying that it has to be the ARTIST'S "inner journey", since I think the theme should also be open to depicting a character going through their own inner journey, or something like that.

I'm not sure everyone would be comfortable posting "vent art" for a contest entry.
But other than that I think the theme is interesting.

I'm with Tonch in this one.

I'm not exactly comfortable at expressing something so personal for a contest.

It might just liberate you though.. and bring you a sense of renewal.. or heal any past traumas.. and as i said you do not have to tell anyone what the artwork is about. they might just look at it and be like, 'oookaaayy.. ' and then if everyone does that then there will be a sense of unity since we;re all in it together - it's a shared experience.

i'll get a couple more opinions but if people think the theme is too "emo" then i can change it. no worries.

It's a great theme - but I just think it might be a little uncomfortable for others? Keep in mind that this is just my opinion. If everyone goes for it, I don't mind either way.

An inner journey can also be an actual journey.

Like how people go backpacking and learn more about themselves.

Or that first family trip that felt so amazing being in a different place.

I think if it did something to you emotionally or inside you, it could classify as an inner journey, just represented as the actual trip.

Do they have to be ours?
I have ideas related to characters personal journeys. So I want to see if that's cool.

This is basically what I meant in my post, in case it was worded stupidly.

Yeah, i was going for this as well.. it can be a spiritual experience as well. A fictional character's journeys could be valuable if that journey compellingly mirrors real life. For instance Odysseus' voyage was fictional but it dealt with many aspects of human nature.

So character journeys would be alright. Hell you could even draw Link climbing Ganon's tower to save Zelda at the top.

Oh sure, blame your tools.
You do not need anything other than what you currently possess. Try to make the most of what you already have.

Then I'm totally for this theme
(though that doesn't mean I'll draw something for it, I can't promise I'll be able to).

I'm enjoying where this is headed now.

But I'm all in for the next theme! :> I'll see if I have the time this month (maybe - maybe not).

Pencils can be such powerful tools if you get creative!
