Love Zelda? Love Writing?

Hi, I'm Crab Helmet. You may remember me from such articles as "Linear vs. Non-Linear", and "Why Less is More".

You may have noticed the shining golden banner to your left, that signifies I am part of the Site Staff. You may have wondered how I earnt this honour, or evem what I do for ZU. That's partly what I am here to explain. I became Site Staff by applying to our glorious benevolent leader, Jason, for the purpose of writing indepth articles. My works up to this point in time have largely been the filling sustenance of cream between the deep and richly textured cake of true articles. I've been holding off for one purpose.

My team works hard on these articles. We read through them, spell-check them, critique them, and make sure they are of a suitable quality for our audience - that's you! I hope you enjoyed reading those articles, because there is a lot of work going into those. Part of the reason there is so much work going in, is because my team of dedicated article monkeys is rather small.

In fact, I'm the only one.

This is why I'm reaching out to you guys, because here at ZeldaUniverse, we recognise you guys have talent. We need people who are capable of writing their minds and hearts out (on Zelda-related materials, that is), for our site. So what I'm asking here, is, do you have a passion for Zelda? Are you capable of writing and reviewing indepth articles? Do you want a sparkly shiny pretty yellow banner under your name? If so, this is the best place to apply.

If you are interested, please post some paragraphs entailing why exactly you think you are the best man/woman/Goron for the job. What could you bring to the team? What experience do you have? Do you have any past articles or quality pieces of writing you could show us? The more you show you are capable of, the more likely you are to be considered.

Remember guys and girls, this your chance to leave a mark on ZU. If you can do this, and you can do it well, people well remember you, respect you. You'd increase server traffic, and make Jason a happy man. And most of all, you'd entertain people. You'll know that you made someone's half an hour, and imrpoved their day.

:3

Good luck with your applications!

I'd like to apply, actually. I'm not claiming to be the most articulate person on the planet, but I do have a passion for this sort of thing! I would enjoy writing stuff up, critiquing and even the simple tasks such as spell-checking -- if it'll make someone's day then, heck, I'm up for it!

PM?

Re: Love Zelda? Love Writing?

I'm interested.

I've already written The Message of Majora's Mask and there are plenty of additional topics I'd enjoy exploring at length.

The focus of my articles wouldn't be on theorizing, but I am very interested in analyzing the storytelling and gameplay of the series. I've been studying game design in college for the past two years, so that's something I'd bring to the table.

I'm not too thrilled with the current state of the series. I believe it's been adhering too strictly to "Zelda doctrine" and as a result the "Zelda magic" has been fading. Those are ideas I'd explore in my articles, as I discuss where things have been going wrong and how the series can get back on its feet, in addition to other topics.

I've also been trying to get started with my own YouTube channel recently. I think I could potentially have some fun making YouTube videos to enhance certain articles. Summer's coming up and I'm looking for ways to spend my downtime.

Re: Love Zelda? Love Writing?

Yes, that's exactly what we want. The Bombers have theorizing covered, what I want us to focus on is gameplay. Hylian Dan, I think we can say pretty safely you are hired. :3 I'll contact Jason and let him know.

Note to everyone else, applications are still open, and will be forever! The bigger the team, the better the articles!

Re: Love Zelda? Love Writing?

I see this as a great opportunity to improve. I would like to work on my writing skills, help critique, spell check for others, and possibly write my own articles. The extent of my writing I have done so far has been for class related stuff (high school and college) but nothing like an article for a large website/forum.

I am one who is sheltered with some of the games out of my reach so I would be limited on writing for certain games but that shouldn't exclude me too much. I can always write it as how an outsider is looking in on the game.

Currently, I help edit the Zelda Wiki. I am also in the middle reading "Legend of Zelda and Philosophy" and would love to write some review/critiques of the book. I also have some creative ideas, relating to not exactly theorizing, about characters and items.

If you have any questions, please let me know and I will get back to you within the day.

Re: Love Zelda? Love Writing?

I've never been put to the test, but I'm sure, if there is something that really grabs me, I can write about it, and if there's something that is really grabbing me, it's game-to-film adaptations, In fact its my specialty.

Zelda is no exception. From fan films and April fools videos, to speculation and rumors. Fans vs Hollywood. Looking into an insight of what could be, either a disastrous or glorious adaptation.

Does this tickle your fancy?

Wolf would love too.

Wolf has plenty of the Zelda games in reach. He also loves to write, especially about Zelda-related articles. Wolf has joined the Zelda wiki and started to edit things there. Wolf loves to critique and he would be more than happy to devote time to a forum that has helped him with Zelda related questions and walkthroughs. Wolf already has some articles in mind, and a few getting thought up in his cranium.
Wolf could also do some reviews of Nintendo games, if you needed it. :3

Any questions, Mr. Crab? PM Wolf about them.

Re: Love Zelda? Love Writing?

I like to write and love zelda. I am a masters student at the university of Missouri. I have a plethora of writing samples I can send to you. I write alot of article reviews for my professor \.

For example, I wrote a review on misleading historical markers found throughout the United States. In San Francisco the China Beach marker sates that the Chinese fishermen worked around the San Francisco Bay and helped establish industries and traditions that are still prevalent today. Lowen criticizes the marker and claims it to be misleading because in the 1890’s whites prohibited Chinese people from the fishing industry. The marker should be changed to tell the true story. The story of how the Chinese Americans were originally oppressed my white men and were banned from fishing on the beach, but were still vital to the growth of San Francisco’s traditions and industries.
Memorials dedicated to the confederacy are scattered throughout the United States. For example, a memorial fountain is located in downtown Helena, Montana. Lowen argues that the location for this memorial in inappropriate because there were never any confederate soldiers from Montana. In fact, Montana wasn’t even a state until twenty-four years after the civil war ended. The confederate monument should be replaced with a Lewis and Clark monument or something that relates to Helena Montana’s history. The geographical location should always be considered when deciding where to erect a historical memorial.
In South Dakota on the eastern border of Brookings County a historical marker states that it was home to roving Indians until 1862. Lowen criticizes this historical marker because most Native Americans did not rove until the Europeans forced them to. In fact, most Native Americans lived in settled communities and when they did move it was generally from place to place within their territory. The historical marker should tell the story of how Native Americans were forced to move west because of the increase of Europeans settling westward and the constant pressure from surrounding Indian tribes. The adaption of the horse culture was vital to the survival of the Indians who lived on the plains. Perhaps the marker in Brookings South Dakota should tell the story of how Native Americans adapted European culture for means of survival.
Hannibal Missouri is a small town that attracts thousands of people every year to see the town where Mark Twain grew up. Lowen argues that Mark Twain was a writer who wanted America to be a better country. Twain often wrote about slavery and the effects it had on his life and the culture in America. The main theme in Huckleberry Fin was in fact racism. Hannibal is home to a plethora of tourist attractions; however none of the attractions mention anything about slavery. Not even the living history farms or the Mark Twain Outdoor theatre mention anything about slavery or the slave character Jim who was a central character in Huckleberry Finn. Apparently the city of Hannibal thinks the issue of slavery should be omitted from all of the tourist attractions. The issue of slavery is very much the history of Missouri as well as the inspiration for a lot of Mark Twain’s writings. Hannibal’s Tourist attractions should tell the whole story and not leave out important facts because their controversial or might offend some tourists. The point of a historical marker is to educate people with the truth and not omit important facts because it might embarrass or offend someone.
Texas has more historical markers than any other state. One of these markers is located in Galveston, Texas. It states that a fire destroyed this building and a new building was built in its place. The building was a well-known paint and hardware store. Loewen’s argued that the marker is simply unnecessary. The Magale building in Galveston doesn’t mark any event or anything important and doesn’t relate to the history of Texas of Galveston in any way. Historical markers that are not matters of state and nationwide importance are completely pointless and unnecessary. These markers should be changed or simply removed.
Slave trading was Richmond Virginia’s largest industry in the 1850’s. Robert Lumpkin was a well-known slave holder during the civil war. He was caught of guard on April, 2 1865 when the Confederate army decided to abandon Richmond. Robert who still owned fifty slaves locked them up in his own personal jail. The next day the slaves were set free by the Union soldiers. Loewen argued that Richmond doesn’t have any historical marker or site in town relating to the slave trade because it’s not a pleasant truth. However, not all the accounts of the slave trade are negative. There are positive stories about the slave trade that visitors of Richmond could learn while learning about the city’s past and involvement with the slave trade. For example, a historian could tell the story of how fifty slaves were set free from a jailhouse in downtown Richmond, Virginia.
Eleven days before Abraham Lincoln was assassinated he walked from the James river in Richmond Virginia and he made his way to the Confederate capital. Loewen described Lincoln’s walk as one of the greatest in American history. However, Richmond doesn’t recognize this walk on their landscape. Richmond has many markers dedicated to George Washington, but nothing about Abraham Lincoln’s historic walk in Richmond. This historic walk would be a perfect example of why historians are invaluable. Many Americans are fascinated with Abraham Lincoln and would pay money to go on a tour to learn more about the life of Lincoln. Loewen believed a historical marker should be erected where Lincoln walked after the civil war was over. However, a tour guide would be more appropriate because it would allow people to learn more about the significance and reason why Lincoln went on this long walk in Richmond.

Re: Love Zelda? Love Writing?

Dear Mr. Crab Helmet (cakes),

If there is one thing I consider myself proficient at, it would be telling people what I'm thinking about. Be it spoken word or written dissertation, I love communicating my view of the world around me.

Writing is an easy hobby for me, and I have been gifted with the ability to let words flow naturally from my "pen". Plus, given the extreme training middle school and AOL messenger put me through, my typing skills are, so very humbly stated, freaking fantastic.

All kidding aside, I love thinking about not simply Zelda as a game but Zelda as an idea. Thematic analysis is my greatest passion, represented here in a small piece I wrote concerning the moon children in Majora's Mask. I love diving into the deeper veins that keep the blood of Hyrule pumping. Needless to say as of late I have felt the forum posting to be rather lacking in this area, and would like to get the ball rolling so bigger and brighter concepts can be raised and discussed.

So as a synopsis, I want to write because it is a passion of mine and I want to use it so this website offers something to be gained beyond the simple sword fighting experience. Thanks for your time in reading this Crab Helmet (cakes), I hope to hear from you soon.

*PS I couldn't resist, I love crab cakes....

Re: Love Zelda? Love Writing?

I don't have any experience writing articles for the public, but I used to write my own one two-sided page class newsletter back in elementary (grade) school. On the back was my video game section where I wrote a small article on a Nintendo game, usually Pokémon (Kirby and Pokémon were all I was really interested in back then) and put a poll about how good people thought a certain game was. In 4th grade, I ran and wrote for a class newspaper (I had many classmates involved in writing articles about random topics---actually each kid decided for hisself/herself what to write about---like the weather and cars) which was eventually distributed throughout the entire 4th grade. That was years ago, but last summer, I worked for my summer camp's newspaper (writing some articles) which was given to all the parents of campers.

These days, while it isn't necessarily journalism or other newsletter-type things, I am an avid writer of fiction (mostly fantasy and science fiction), mainly for the online publishing site, FictionPress.com. I am always willing to write articles for anything though, especially about something I am really interested in like Zelda. So, as a lovely clincher, this Minish would like to work as a member of the ZU Site Staff!

I have good grammar, a creative mind, and love to write and type, so it will be awesome if I get the job.

Re: Love Zelda? Love Writing?

I do like to write and especially if it's about something I'm interested in. Whenever I start writing I can't be stopped. Usually I can write interesting papers that get 100s in school, and it is easy to make my writing hook people in. I don't want to be a bragger at all, but the invitation to post kind of told me to give out my qualities in writing. I would like to write articles.

Re: Love Zelda? Love Writing?

I will apply. I have experience writing for the school newspaper since last August. He puts us through the wringer every month, we have to write at least four stories a month, two or more of which will get published. If deadlines aren't met we don't have a chance of getting a good grade and I am not about to fail that class. He doesn't give that much leeway so there is no room to screw around either. I am very interested in this and hope I get the position.
