ZU Community Center: Got an idea for a project? Read First Post!

I tend to get overly excited about beer. So I just kinda decided to suggest that on a whim. If I get another idea i like I'll try to at least think through it before proposing it.

This miiiight be in the right section/thread, it might not.

So I had an idea. It was mostly facetious at first, but it might actually be fun.
I had an idea to make a comic about ZU, highlighting anything ridiculous that goes on around here, and including in-jokes that certain groups of members would understand. The concept would be an endlessly tall apartment building, inside of which are the members of ZU. It’s sort of a sitcom-turned-comic… a sitcomic, if you will. I decided to call it “ZU Flats”.

I’ve come up with a quick logo for it, also.


The thing is that I barely know anybody on this site, so if I just did this myself with the few people on the forums I talk to often, it’d be pretty stale. So I thought it might be fun for it to be a community thing. I’d need other members’ help in thinking up content for the comic, since there are many popular members here that everyone knows except me, and it’d be odd to have a ZU comic without staples of the site.

I suppose it could be that people besides me could draw strips for it as well, but I was kinda hoping I’d handle that, since I need to find some way to force myself to practice in Flash more and it’d be more consistent that way anyway. But the problems I’d need help with besides the content is also how to depict people. I dunno what anyone looks like, but people are more often recognized by their avatars as well—and not everyone has a humanoid avatar (some have text, for example). So maybe the community could help iron out these details.

I think, however, that being able to make fun of not only others but yourself should be mandatory. Otherwise this wouldn’t be very good-natured.
I made a really quick (and I stress “really quick”) example comic featuring myself (solely to break the ice and give a demonstration of what I’m talking about).


So, what do you guys think? Could this make for a fun on-going community “project”? (I say that in quotes because I doubt it’d be any sort of consistently-released thing… less of a community project and more of a fun community undertaking, really.)

This is the only problem I have with your proposal. If this is approved, there has to be a group of people working on it. Maybe make sure there's at least one a month, or something like that. Just find some way to promise that this project won't die.

Yeah, that would be a problem. First of all, I don't know how to organize such a thing really (which is another thing that would require discussion), and secondly, I really can't promise that it would be consistent in terms of release.

But like I said, it doesn't really matter if it's an "official" community project or not-- I just had no idea where else to propose this. If someone has an idea of a place this would better fit (if any) and could kindly direct me there, it'd be appreciated.

You could always just make a comic thread, and post them in there. are you proposing that you would be the persn to draw then, or other people would draw too?

You could always just accept ideas/requests, and create the comics whenever something interesting or funny happens. Or you could have some helpers that feed you ideas...

As I said in one of the earlier posts, I'd prefer it to be me drawing them, but if enough other people wanted to draw some too (and they aren't total crap), then I don't see why not.

The problem is that if I post something like just a comic thread in the art section or something, it won't get any traffic at all. The main thing I need to stress is that this would be better as something from the whole community, since it's supposed to play off of many of the things frequent members have come to expect from this site, and everyone else has much more experience than I do in terms of knowing all the members.

I have no idea who you are, so I can't very well put you in it on my own.

So... you want this to be somewhere people will look at, drawn by you, with ideas/suggestions coming from ZUsers?

I don't have any specific ideas on how this could work; I'm just trying to get all the important points about it in one place.

More or less, but not necessarily.
Also, all the important points about it are in the post describing it.
It just happens to be really long.

A picture of me.
My personality.
What other ZUers think of me.

Well yeah, you and whoever else that's in on the joke is going to have to basically tell me what to put in it, or brainstorm with me. I can't just write comics about people I'm unfamiliar with and have them be relevant.

That's the other thing I forgot to mention I believe-- if we go through with this ("official" project or not), people are going to have to decide how they want themselves depicted. Photos can easily be translated into a cartoon character, but most people are probably more recognizable by their avatars, although not everyone even has a humanoid avatar (some have text, for example). So that's another thing.

Through both the visual representation and the context of the joke, it should be fairly obvious to those in the know who is involved in the comic, so we don't have to make everyone wear freaking nametags or anything.

I could see this having a lot of stock in it for comedy.

I dunno, I just love personifications of people. You could definitely make charactatures based on people's personalities. Especially with your natural ability to exaggerate things, I'm sure you'd be able to do some awesome stuff.

And dont even get me started on the SD board regulars. They'd all be highly argumentive. :P

AND all the role players would be drawn as fantasy/sci fi characters, mixed in with the regular lot. The art board members would be drawn more detailed, and die hard clan members would have Green/Blue/Red skin!

Oh, the possibilities are endless!

...Gold, Silver and Red would all be dressed in Pokefag gear...
Sailboat would either have a mast or be that dood from Mass Effect.
