Orinon Hunter
Name: Orinon Hunter (Orin for short)
Age: 521 (but he spent a lot of that imprisoned in spirit form in a tree)
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Hair: Dark Brown, messy as he never combs it.
Eyes: Brown
Weapon: A one handed sword. Not made for power, made for duelling and subtle movements. It has a sharp steel blade and an ornamental handle.
Armour: He rarely uses armour. When he does he wears a thin undershirt of chainmail. He never carries a shield as this does not help his battle style.
Strengths: Orin is good at coming up with strategies and can wield his sword with skill. He is also quite well educated and can read several ancient languages. He can also run very fast, but only for short distances. If he runs too far, he will not have enough energy to fight well. He fights as you would in a fencing match, not just randomly swinging a two-handed sword around screaming like a berserker.
Weakness: Orin will very rarely overpower anyone. If ambushed by a large warrior with an enormous two handed battle axe, he will lose unless he can move in time. He depends entirely on skill and intelligence. Orinon knows his weaknesses, so will often keep on the alert and be ready to flee at any moment.
Skills/Magic: Orinon can shape change into three different forms: Otter, Bat and Kestrel (Bird of Prey). The Otter is useful for swimming or diving and also for fitting into small holes. The bat is used for stealth (at night obviously, a black bat will be quite easy to see during the day), running away from a battle and easy flying as it does not need as much time to change into as the Kestrel form. The Kestrel form is for flying high and long distances and for fighting against other shape-changers. The metamorphic process takes time to do properly; otherwise he may change back without warning, which could hurt if he were in a small space that he could not normally fit into. However, once he has changed once, he can easily switch between two forms in a matter of seconds (within the same day). He can also leave his body as a spirit dragon, but this requires protective spells to ensure his body is not possessed by another spirit while he leaves it. Other than this, his skill at magic is very little. He knows of magic, he just cannot perform it himself.
Appearance: Orinon has slightly tanned skin and is about average height. He has a few small muscles that do not normally stand out. He dresses in a simple black tunic, leggings and travelling cloak to blend in with the darkness, when he travels the most. His sword hangs from a leather belt in an elaborate sheath. Also on this belt are several pouches containing small amounts of money and food. The cloak is fastened round his neck with a small broach with a symbol on it. He wears rather worn brown skin boots, bound together with frayed string. He has a small tattered bag on his back (under the cloak) in which he keeps his few possessions. Nobody other than him has ever looked inside this. One of his most prized items is a bone flute, engraved with runes which even he does not know the meaning of.
Personality: Orinon likes coming out on top, no matter what the circumstances. He occasionally has periods when he gets very depressed, during which time it is best not to interfere. He tends to rush into things sometimes when he is excited, but mostly he tries to be calm and work out the best solution before acting. He does jot like anyone asking about his past, but will sometimes tell people if he grows to like them (and they don’t ask).
Biography: Orinon was born centauries ago in an ancient tribe. The tribe worshiped the four dragons: Earth, Air, Water and fire: North, East, South and West. He lived a normal life until he was selected as the next Shaman of the tribe. The Shaman’s job was to converse with the spirit world in order to put spirits to rest, cure diseases caused by evil spirits and to forewarn the tribe of dangers that the spirits knew of.
Orinon began his training but then war broke out between his tribe and mountain barbarians who worshiped gods of thunder and wished to invade the plains that surrounded the mountains in order to extend their hunting grounds. The war went badly for Orinon’s tribe when mountain giants, who had been enslaved by the barbarians, joined the fight. They were five times the height of a man and carried huge clubs and threw boulders at their enemies.
When the barbarians attacked the tribe unexpectedly the Shaman gave Orinon the manacle of the dragons: a bronze bracelet with four stones set in it that each represented one of the dragons. Onyx (black) for earth, diamond (clear) for air, Sapphire (blue) for water and Ruby (red) for fire. The Shaman then invoked the most powerful Shaman spells to bind Orinon’s body to his spirit and bind his spirit within a young oak sapling in order to protect him.
Orinon could only watch as his family, friends and tribe were slaughtered by the enemy. Since this day he has always blamed himself and thought that things might have gone differently if he had helped. He watched as the forest was gradually removed and a town built. Luckily his oak was spared and ended up in the centre of the town.
Eventually, during a huge thunderstorm, the tree was struck by lightning, providing the power to release him. As nobody was around (all hiding inside from the storm) he could pretend he had just arrived and begged clothes from them (his own being rather old by now). Since then, he has travelled around, looking for knowledge mainly because he feels he has to have a purpose in life.
