Jarek Rune

Ooc: Jarek has already been approved, this is just a re-written version of his profile to update things and... make it all sound better and stuff.
Bic:

Name: Jarek Rune

Theme Music:
Black Betty

Age: He is eighteen; the oldest of three children.

Race: Human.

Sex: Male.

Hair: His hair is a bright shade of orange, being almost blond.

Eyes: Orange, much like his hair.

Weight: 150 lbs

Height: He’s roughly 6ft tall.

Weapons:

Squall
Jarek carries a broadsword that was passed down through his family. It has seen a lot of wear and tear over its many years, but it’s still one of the best weapons ever forged. This sword has a strong power over dark forces, being blessed long ago by heavenly forces (as the legend goes). Jarek’s very skilled with the blade. He still trains every day with it, trying to invent his own techniques and moves that don’t always work as planned, but still are effective nonetheless. When not in use, Squall is sheathed on his left side.

Crossbow
Apart from his sword, Jarek owns a black crossbow that fires deadly metal bolts. It’s small for the average crossbow, yet it still maintains its long range and deadly power. Jarek’s marksmanship isn’t the best, but the speed at which he reloads his crossbow is surprisingly fast. He can fire and have the device reloaded by the time the first bolt hits its mark. When not in use, the crossbow is strapped to his back.

Smoke Bombs
The one ninja tool Jarek favored, other than the blade, was smoke bombs. He holds about five on his person at all times. They’re small and round, strapped to his belt. He uses them mainly for distraction purposes, yet if inhaled they still make one dizzy. They require a little flame to be used, but Jarek will simply ignite them with his fire abilities.

Armor: Jarek says he doesn’t require armor. The closest thing to armor he has is his leather, gauntlets. They defend against dull blades, punches, and kicks, but not much more.

Strengths:
Because he was once a ninja, his strength definitely lies with his speed, agility, defense, stealth, and awareness of his surroundings. Since his being captured on the open sea, Jarek decided to pay more attention to his muscles. As a ninja he was already strong, but when he was captured and worked aboard a ship he needed to exercise his upper body strength for some of the errands they had him run.

Apart from his physical skills, he’s also talented in his special “magic” abilities. He’s a fast learner, having trained under Master Leroy Thoth whose methods required quick learning. The man's technique of teaching was a little confusing, though oddly effective in its own right. Jarek struggled at first, but Leroy's rather menacing tactics forced his power out of him. Once he learned, his skill began to blossom, but was interrupted after being captured at sea.

Weakness:
Jarek’s weakness lies in his lack of armor and his lack in magic defense. Although he’s skilled in magic himself, he’s not the best at coming up with ways to deflect it. His only course of action when coming to a hostile mystic blast of energy is to dodge it. However, these weaknesses are nothing compared to his bane.

Jarek’s bane is women, simply put. He feels he has to flirt with every girl he’s the slightest bit attracted to. He’s not what you’d call a pervert, but he’s more of a romantic (although he still has his pervy days). He secretly likes to read romance novels, and within those novels he imagines what it would be like to be a part of one of those epic romances, a knight in shining armor saving a damsel in distress. He doesn't proudly boast this hidden secret of his, finding it slightly embarrassing. Still, his flirtatious nature has rarely gotten very far in terms of relationship. His appearance and personality might be attractive at first, but the amount of danger he gets in seems to turn away most of the ladies he’s able to woo.

Skills/Magic:

Jarek is capable of inflicting heavy damage with magic. Although he is capable of doing so, it doesn't always come to him the way he wants it. It can be erratic at times, a little unstable to control. Sometimes he exerts more power than he intends, some times not enough. Because of the heavenly blessing he and his two siblings received, he will eventually be able to perform devastating magic attacks. But currently, he only knows a few fire techniques, lightning techniques, and just began practicing on bending the element of air.

Jarek can generate bursts, streams, gusts, and waves of the element desired. Fire, lightning, and air are most potent in that order. Although he spent a year training his magic, it took him most of that time to actually tap into his inner strength. Now, he prefers to stick to his weapons and hand-to-hand combat skills.

Appearance:
Jarek wears the traditional black ninja outfit, but instead of the full mask he wears the variation that only covers his mouth. He doesn’t wear his mask all the time, though. He only wears it when he wishes to keep his face hidden. His crossbow is slung over his back, while his sword is sheathed at his left side in a black scabbard. The muscles on his arms are visible through his sleeveless shirt, but other than that his strength his concealed beneath his garments. Jarek is hard to see at night, and from a distance is nearly invisible due to his ninja shrouds. Yet, a month or so at sea has roughened his movements and his balance isn't what it used to be. He's trying to correct his clumsy mistakes, but lady luck seems to disagree with him on many occasions.

Personality:
In one word, Jarek could be described as unique. His methods are unorthodox, partially because of all the different fighting methods he incorporates into his attacks. He focuses mainly on the various styles and techniques he learned while training as a ninja, but he incorporates the brutish sort of fighting he learned during his time on the open sea.

Jarek’s very outgoing, always goofing off even when his own life is on the line. However, if a friend or by-standard is in danger, Jarek will put the jokes aside and focus on saving his allies. Jarek would sooner die to save another life than to save his own skin.

Jarek’s ego is also a little too big for his head. Even when he loses fights, both physical and vocal, he acts like he doesn’t care the least and has ultimately won on a different level of sorts. This often drives his enemies mad at his refusal to accept his inferiority, and has surprisingly not cost Jarek his life... yet.

Other than his self-centered personality and selfless heroic nature, Jarek is, above all, a flirt. With any woman he finds the slightest bit attractive, whether in appearance or personality, he feels he needs to flirt with them. He might not be the best flirt, but he has fun trying. He secretly reads romantic and romance action novels in his spare time, finding them to be quite magnificent. If he’s not trying to hook himself up with a beautiful young lady, he’ll be helping someone else do the same. (though his help might not be the best)

Biography:

Jarek was the oldest, the proudest, and the most skilled of his three siblings. Jarek doesn’t try to be modest about this fact, he’s not afraid to boast.

He was born in small, secluded town: His mother, Mary; his father, Arthur; and his sister and brother whom he looked after and cared for deeply. Dehel was his youngest brother, Tayler was his younger sister. They were happy, even though that happiness didn’t last long. His family was a loving one, but often felt like they were at each other’s throats. Jarek and his father had a secret, a secret that would save the world. In time, Dehel and Tayler would learn that secret too, but now wasn’t that time.

Jarek couldn’t recall many memories of his mother. He never spent much time with her, even though he was only five years old when she died. Jarek, even in his youth, knew something was wrong when she simply didn’t return one night from her usual walk. When Arthur grew worried, he left to find his wife. When Jarek’s father returned several days later, it was obvious his mother wouldn’t be back.

Arthur was never happy again. Of course he smiled and laughed from time to time, but he was never truly happy. All three of the children worked together to make him laugh and smile, but even when he did Jarek could sense he was doing it only to make them proud. Jarek came to his father about his depression when he turned seven years old. He asked his father why he never smiled for real anymore. Arthur told him, “It’s because my smile was taken away from me.”

“Who took it, dad?”

That’s when Arthur told Jarek the family secret. At that point onward, Jarek kept the secret as well, but promised he would tell Tayler and Dehel when he felt they were ready. They weren’t ready yet. They weren’t ready to know that it was foreseen that they were meant to kill a dark fiend, and free the world from its dark bonds. They weren’t ready to know the great power they were blessed with in order to carry out this task. They weren’t ready, but they would be.

After his dad told him the deep secret he held from him, there seemed to be a wall that eased up from between them. His father taught him how to hunt, work a bow, and even wield a sword. The sword work wasn’t the best, but it was still just basic stuff. Up until he was ten years old, Arthur was faithful in taking Jarek with him on nearly every hunt.

One hunt, however, ended a little different than normal. Jarek went with his father as usual, riding behind him on the same horse. Jarek set up camp for the night while his father decided to go ahead of him to find a spot to set up an ambush.

Arthur was taking far too long, so Jarek followed the path of pegs his father left to his setup site. Before Jarek reached the location, he knew he would have to turn back. Blood stained the grass and nearby trees, a fallen corpse several feet ahead of him. Jarek stared the half skull left behind by the corpse. That incision sent chills down his spine, not only because it was his dad he was staring at. He knew who killed him; the wound was exactly how his father described the others. He shook the shock from his mind; Jarek knew he had to get out of there. When he finally made it home atop his father’s horse, and he was able to stow himself away in his father’s room, he cried.

The next day, Jarek came to discover that Dehel had run away. He sent word to his uncle, Jamous Grey, news of his father’s death and Dehel’s disappearance. It took a full week for Jamous to arrive with a scouting party, but even with his numbers they weren’t able to track down Jarek’s little brother. Tayler was very close to Dehel, so she spent most of the time furiously writing in her journal through her anger at both her father’s death and Dehel’s disappearance. Jarek wanted to comfort her, but he couldn’t find the right words to say. Instead he had to pack their things, their uncle Jamous was going to take care of them from then on.

Jamous Grey took the two children under his wing and brought them up as his own. Jamous ran a school for ninjas, and with Jarek and Tayler’s permission, he began to teach his niece and nephew the art of the shinobi. They both learned quickly, moving through the ranks faster than the average students. It probably helped that their uncle would provide them a more extensive training than the rest of the students, making them both his personal apprentices. Jarek was naturally the better fighter than Tayler, surpassing her in every subject the school had to offer.

When Jarek was fifteen years old, Jamous came to him about a master teacher who lives across the seas. He said how the teacher was a master of the magic arts, and would help Jarek develop the skill he was born with. Obviously, Jamous knew of the prophecy as well.

In a year, Jarek was being trained under the master mage Jamous told him about. His name was Leroy Thoth. His methods were complicated, and it actually took them several months to actually tap into the power Jarek stored within. At that point onward, his skill in his special abilities slowly began to grow. He’d journey home every now and then to teach Tayler what he had learned so far. Surprisingly, she caught on faster than he was learning. Her ability to catch on so fast startled him; he secretly kept some of the secrets he learned to himself in fear that she’d surpass him too soon.

It didn’t matter, though; Jarek’s training didn’t go on for much longer before his ship was attacked by pirates. It must have been a long week for them because why they chose to prey on his particular vessel was rather pathetic, he didn’t have many goods nor any weapons save for his ninja gear. Ordinarily Jarek would have defended himself, probably killing off the entire ship of scurvy thieves; ordinarily the ship’s captain wasn’t a beautiful young lady. Jarek played weak and let the pirates take him in, simply because the woman captain was attractive to him.

Captain Maria Blake took Jarek in as a slave, forcing him to work by scrubbing the ship’s decks and tending to the sails. Jarek never refused her orders, following them through without hesitation. His devotion began to irritate Maria, so she worked him harder, even forcing him to cook meals for the crew. The fact that he cooked the best meals any of them had in quite a long time only angered Maria more. Jarek would flirt with her each time he saw her on deck, but that only angered her all the more. She would have executed her slave if it weren’t for the fondness her crew had toward him.

Eventually, Maria simply grew sick and tired of his flirting, peeping, and downright dedication that she threw him overboard near land. Jarek was able to swim ashore, knowing that Maria’s hate for him wasn’t just a tease. It was fine though, he didn’t mind. She wasn’t really his type anyway, the whole piracy bit.

Upon reaching land, Jarek tried to recuperate from his months of living on the sea. However, his recuperation didn’t last long before his hunger got the better of him. Despite his skill at stealth, Jarek got a little sloppy when he tried to steal a rather large man’s sandwich. The fat lard apparently ran faster than he looked, and managed to chase Jarek halfway across town.

Right when Jarek was beginning to run out of options, he ran into the last person he’d expect to see again: Tayler, his younger sister. She paid the man, who Jarek took the sandwich from, more than enough money to keep him off his tail. It was probably the first time Tayler ever got him out of trouble, but he didn’t have it in him to express to her his gratitude. His cockiness was too big to do so. However, soon he’d have to explain to her the prophecy. He could see it in her eyes that she was very skilled in combat, now, but not as excellent as he was, of course.
