Laurana
I know I can approve my own chars, but I'm not going to. Call it a check against my tendency to toe the line on how powerful a char is allowed to be.
So. What do you think? Name: Laurana (pronounced “Law-rah-na”). Age: 42 (in human terms, she’d be somewhere around 8-10 years old). Race: Dragon. Sex: Female. Scales: Emerald green. Eyes: Completely black. Weight: 739 kg. Height: 1.77 metres (about 5’10”) at the shoulder. Weapon: Claws, teeth, and what little magic she can use. Armour: Strengths: A dragon, even one as young as Laurana, is a great deal stronger than the vast majority of people are. She can also fly well, and is extremely agile and fast while airborne. And, while Laurana is not as swift while on the ground, she is still faster than most are. In addition, the green is immune to fire-based attacks and can use at least some of her birthright magic, including the ability to breath fire. Weakness: While Laurana keeps her speed while on the ground, she is about as agile as a brick. Furthermore, the young dragon’s green scales have not developed to the point where they act as effective armour; a good strike from an attacker’s weapon will break through to the tender flesh underneath. Similarly, both Laurana’s magical and combat abilities are severely underdeveloped. She can breath normal, everyday fire on her foes, but this requires her to be calm and concentrate on the ability. The rest of the dragonchild’s magic is instinctive, unreliable, and lacks any real power, while her fighting skills are virtually non-existent – she relies entirely on instinct. Skills/Magic: Laurana is highly skilled at flying, and is able to use some minor magic on instinct. The only exception to this is her mastery over fire, which all dragons are born with. This means she cannot be harmed by fire in any way; a flaming sword would have the same effect as an ordinary one. Laurana cannot, however, breath fire on her foes unless she is completely calm and concentrating on the ability – a rare thing in battle. Personality: It is exceptionally difficult to anger Laurana, for all of her immaturity. The awkward young green has an insatiable curiosity, and will take an interest in anything from how a particular spell is done to why a bird needs feathers to fly. However, although she is usually as bouncy and enthusiastic as you would expect a child to be, Laurana often goes through spells of melancholy that can last for several days. Part of the reason for this is that she can remember nothing about her past. Appearance: Laurana’s large, dark eyes stare out from a wedge-shaped, horned head mounted on the end of a serpentine, green-scaled neck that is almost as long as her main body. When in the air, her sleek form is graceful and swift, but she appears more clumsy and awkward on the ground. Each of her four legs end in clawed feet, but the front pair can also be used in a fashion similar to a human’s hands. Laurana’s green wings appear to be too large in relation to her body, while her tail – longer than either neck or body – seems larger still, and adds to her clumsy image. Biography: The young green dragon stared down the cliff at the sprawling town, captivated by the lights shining from the many wood and stone boxes and the columns of smoke rising from the small mounds poking out from the top. Of all the Yngir, those Races younger than her own, none had mastered or used fire to such a degree. That it was the shortest-lived and most magically inept of them all that had accomplished what the others could or would not fascinated the child to a degree that few things could. “Come away from there, Rana,” her mother called. Obediently, Laurana turned away from the cliff and the town below it, but not before using the faintest whisper of magic to magnify her vision enough to make out a few of the two-legged figures staggering between the strange boxes. “Rana!” The older dragon’s call was sharper this time. Almost skipping away from the cliff edge, Laurana waited a moment and then hopped into the air, spreading her oversized wings at the apex of her jump. The two extended limbs easily caught the air beneath them, allowing the green-scaled dragonchild to glide over to where her mother waited before touching her claws to the ground again. Nuzzling her daughter, the red dragon asked, “What have I told you about giving yourself away in Yngir lands?” “But it’s night, Mother. They couldn’t see me.” Laurana lay down against her mother’s flank and pointedly tugged at the older dragon’s folded wing. “Besides,” she added between tugs, “how can I learn anything about them if I can’t go near them?” “And what about magicians?” her mother replied, obligingly covering Laurana with her wing. The young green sent a mock glare towards her mother before snuggling up against her warm flank and pulling the red wing tighter against her green body. “I’m not stupid, Mother. I only used a whisper.” Laurana felt more than heard her mother sigh as the blood-red dragon curled her powerful body around her daughter. The young child closed her eyes slowly and, yawning, surrendered to her weariness. “Love you, mother,” she murmured sleepily. The child felt her mother’s wing brush softly against her cheek as she drifted off to sleep. A roaring sound close to her head jerked Laurana out of the dreamworld of the dragons and into full wakefulness. The smell of burning flesh filled the young dragon’s nostrils, making her choke and gasp in an attempt to pull fresh, clean air into her lungs. The roaring came again, starting right beside where the green rested. Laurana screamed in reply, partly a vain attempt to drive the penetrating sound out of her head, to stop it rumbling through her body the way an earthquake did the earth’s crust, partly out of fear. Only when her mother’s red-scaled head swung into view and breathed fire at a group of figures nearby did Laurana realise what was happening. Struggling to her feet, the dragonchild turned to face her attackers and sent raw, elemental power flying out at them. The sudden effort so soon after waking took it’s toll on the young dragon. Laurana’s legs almost gave out under her and her vision swam, blurring the landscape around her into a great grey mass. Stumbling, Laurana fell into her mother’s side, and felt the older dragon growl at the two-legged figures that were attacking them. The young green took comfort from her mother’s presence, and forced her vision to clear itself. A moment later, just as the dragonchild turned her head to face their attackers again, the last few that were still standing extended their hands towards the two dragons and yelled a final word in unison. The last thing Laurana saw before the backlash of their magic smashed her to the ground was her mother, who screamed in pain and destroyed the last of their enemies. The young green dragon blinked painfully in the light of the new dawn. A thousand pains assaulted her lithe body at once, while the stench of charred flesh hung heavy in the air. When she could finally move, the dragonchild looked around at her surroundings. A number of blackened lumps of what may have once been flesh lay a short way off, one far larger than the rest, and char marks were spread liberally across the ground around them. The young green stared at them for a few moments, convinced she should know something about them, but all she saw badly burnt meat. Grimacing, the dragon clenched her jaws against the pain and struggled carefully to her four clawed feet. She turned her body stiffly away from the scene and fought to remember how she had got here or where she came from, but her entire memory was blank. Slowly moving away from the place, the one thing that the young green dragon could feel above the pain was a sense of indescribable loss.
