Appearance: Arkey wheres a black coat that covers most of his body; he often has the hood up to cover his features. He remains hunched over for most of the time, and requires a staff to walk effectively. He has sharp, pointy features and wrinkled skin. His body is very thin, and his skin tone is pale. He has pointed ears, and has scars lining his back. He also has a small scar running from the right side of his mouth to about halfway down his chin. His hands and feet are abnormally small, and his eyes appear to glow in dark places.
Under the cloak, he wears a robe - this covers anything that his cloak doesn't. They're the same color, so they often seem to blend together. Arkey has hundreds of pockets lining this robe, and he has visible light and dark patches where a new pocket was sewn on. In the light, you can sometimes notice a shadow hanging over him.
Aeron: A tall staff with a knob at the end of it; it allows him to channel his magic power, and gives him a small degree of control over his mental state. If it were taken from him, his magic power would increase greatly but he'd lose all hold over his mind and he'd eventually destroy everything in his path or die from prolonged exposure to his insane side.
Carried Possessions: He carries amulets and money in the many pockets of his robe. Some have meaning and some don't, but most of them have some magical power to them.*
Aemoh: A golden amulet that grants Arkey the ability to summon spirits. This power is limited to either two demons summoned simultaneously or three summoned (where there is only one out at a time). It takes around an hour to recharge after being used. The amulet itself has orange and red tinges around it, but in places you can even find blue and green spots. It has strange marking over the front, and on the back there is a spiral-like design that glows when a spirit is being summoned. Has a bronze-colored chain linked to the bottom of the amulet.
Powers/Magic/Skills: Arkey has a small degree of control of his surroundings. He can lift inanimate objects (and to an extent, living things) and throw them or move them around the room. Things can vary pretty widely, and the most he's actually picked up is a house - though this strains his mind, and caused him to lose control. He tends to stay away from large things, focusing more on people and weapons. He'll use his surroundings (trees, rocks, etc.) to block attacks as well. His limit for this is ten feet when picking up something, but when throwing it can go as far as thirty.
He also has the ability to control beings with weak minds, though this is usually contained to only animals (think wolves, tigers, etc.) The reason he has difficulty - or simply cannot - control humans is because their minds are more sharp and developed, and most people are able to repel his advances on his mind. He could do it if he were to use his full potential, but due to his condition he never does so. He uses the beings he's taken control of to guard himself, spy, or attack enemies. He can control no more than three large things at a time, and the smaller things are the more he can control. (Like three tigers or five wolves or twelve rabbits, etc.)
He also has the ability to control fire, but the amount of fire he can use is finite. It relies on there being fire being near him already. If there is fire in the room, he can create apparitions and even spirits from said fire. Apparitions are illusions, and spirits range widely*. Most apparitions are large balls of fire that appear to speak, or even creatures (humans, ogres, etc.) that have a reddish tinge to them. He can use it as a kind of whip, and can burn things with it. He can also create other weapons, such as swords and spears, though this is seldom used because of his inability to fight hand to hand. If there isn't enough fire in the room, it takes a while to build up the fire to do these things. He can pretty much gather as much fire as he wants, but the limit he places himself will prevent him from doing so. The most he can gather at one time is the equivalent to about fifteen torches. When throwing fire, or using it in any way, he can usually reach up to six meters with it.

Arkey also has the ability to recreate shadows. He often uses them to hide him or scare his opponents - he can create shadows out of what seems like nothing. If someone were to have a weak mind, he could even give the impression that there was no light wherever they were. Even if it were day time. Depending on the mental state of the victim, his powers vary. Those with strong minds (other mages) can mostly cancel out this ability. People who don't have particularly strong minds range greatly, so it depends on the person for this. People with weak minds, or even mindless creatures, would be subject to whatever he decides to create for them. Can be broken if the victim goes outside the range of his attack, and the mind gradually builds an immunity towards it. A mindless creature would need to get close to him to break the spell. The range of this spell is usually around fifty feet, though the farther it stretches the weaker it is.
Limits: He forces himself to use only a portion of his magic power - about 25% of what he can normally use. Any more (for a long amount of time) will cause him to lose control of himself and possibly die. The normal range of his powers allows him to pick up mountains, engulf entire cities in shadow or even burn them to the ground. The extent of these powers are so great that he'd never survive doing one of these things, however, and he'd die without exception from being exposed to this power. He keeps a tight leash on it for this reason, and even when his powers are let loose he's constantly battling himself to stop these things from happening.
Side-Effects: His magic powers carry with them the ability to drive him insane. If they are used for too long, or he loses the ability to channel the power, he will lose control over his mind and body.
Spirits: Arkey has the ability to call on spirits through the use of an amulet called the Aemoh. Caelon: The male of a pair of twin fire spirits. He has the ability to light fires randomly around an area, allowing Arkey to use his fire abilities.
Trael: The female of twin fire spirits. She has the ability control flames, sending them flying around areas to burn whatever they touch. Can amplify the flames to be hotter and have bigger impacts when they hit. Can send them flying for twenty feet before the begin to die out. Caen: A minor demon of fire. He has the power to change the shape of fire and turn it into physical things. If he had the right amount of fire he could even shape it into a building, though this would cause him to disappear from the human world.
Battle Strengths: He has strong magic abilities, allowing him to trick his enemies or take them out from long distances. He can also call on things to give him aid for a short amount of time (around half an hour).*

Battle Weaknesses: Terrible in close-combat. If he were to be surrounded, he'd have to either give up or risk death. Any kind of hand-to-hand encounter would leave him as the loser. Along with this, his mind occassionaly gives him the impression that allies are enemies. This causes him to attack friends, though it seldom happens. Usually occurs in fights where there are more than ten people on the opposing side, which causes him to become confused with who is who. When soaking wet, his fire abilities are null. He can still call upon fire spirits to aid him, however. Rain is his biggest enemy in this department. When in fights, he can lose the ability to move/throw objects if his concentration is broken; being forced back, or something surprising him would be enough to break his hold on an object/objects. It would take around ten seconds for him to regain this ability, however it would be impossible if under constant pressure from an opponent.
Personality: Arkey has mixed personalities. Due to an event that occurred several hundred years ago, he's not exactly in his 'right' mind.
He bursts out laughing at random intervals, and talks often of 'conspiracy'. He's suspicious of most people who come around him, and he will attack without warning. When in conversation, he changes topics constantly and can never talk on any one thing for more than five minutes. He's also very forgetful, and needs to be reminded of things often.
When left alone, Arkey will begin to talk to himself about things that happened in his past. This includes past wives and children, wars he fought in, and friends he used to have. Sometimes he'll think that he's in a different time period, and calls people by other names.
He'll have the rare moment of sanity, but these are rather short lived. He can hold conversations for a long period of time, and actually has great insight on future events and what people should when this happens. Once these are over, however, he won't remember what happened and needs to be reminded of it. If pressured on remembering, he'll often break down and either attack the person (verbally, mentally, or physically) or retreat in a 'shell' of sorts where no one can speak to him. When in this state he stares into space, whispering to himself for long periods of time.
Other personalities have shown themselves, though this is the most prevalent of them. He can become happy, angry, sad, or anything else at random times. Sometimes he'll take on the role of a completely different person. Most of the things he does are completely random.
History: Arkey discovered his ability to control magic at a young age, and quickly explored it. He became a strong mage, and began to study with many other top mages of the time. Things seemed to be going well, until they discovered the power within him.
One mage, who went by the name Lane, delved into Arkey's mind and discovered that there was power that had yet to be unlocked. He told Arkey, and Arkey demanded it be unleashed. This proved to have... dreadful effects. The first thing that happened was the power - he couldn't control it anymore. He found himself doing things that he'd never done before, and surpassed many of his teachers within days. Then, the insanity came upon him.
The teachers didn't know what to do with him then. He was only 16 years old, yet he was stronger than all of them combined; the problem was that he was unstable. The first attempt to calm him resulted in the death of seventeen mages and twenty four armed soldiers. They let him be from then on, allowing him to do as he pleased.
When he finally snapped again, burning down half of the building they'd lived in (which was really, really large) they sent him back to his parents. It only took three years for the parents to send Arkey away, and shortly after they mysteriously died. He was shipped back between people sporadically. It was deemed he couldn't live on his own, so he always had a guardian of sorts. Over the course of twenty years all of his guardians died shortly after giving him up.
When he got to the last one, however, he worked to try and find a cure for Arkey's 'condition'. This was a magical staff, later named Aeron. It had the spirit of some obscure shadow god that had the power to suppress things bound to it, and it was decided to that Arkey would carry this staff with him for the rest of his life.
The man died years later, and Arkey left. He was in control of himself now, though this control was very thin. It was discovered later that he had a life span that far exceeded a normal humans, though this meant nothing to Arkey. He settled down in a small town and lived there for a while, before decided to move. He couldn't stay anywhere's due to his condition, and the fact that he was constantly losing people put him off. He decided to travel for the rest of his days, and he did so.
Now he does exactly that: travels. As he travels, his mind is gradually slipping away from him. Now he's trying to find a cure with what remains of his humanity.

Hello, Sol. I've had a little look around at your character, and for the most part, you fall within the guidelines for approval. However, your character's powers and magic need some more detail. Phrases like "small degree" and "weak" are subjective qualifiers, when what we need are objective quantifiers, wherever possible. It's got to be something that everyone will be immediately able to understand. So let's get started, shall we?

I'd like to know the limits of this ability. Weight, range, time of day, whatever you've got. Can he lift cars? Buildings? Toasters? When he throws things, how fast do they move? Fast enough to break rocks? The sound barrier? Time itself? Paper bags?!

How much fire? What if Arkay isn't in a room? What if he's outside? Is this an indoors-only power? If it's not, how close do the flames need to be? And what about those apparitions and spirits he can manifest? Just tell me more about those, would you?

So, this magic relies on the mental fortitude of a victim. That sounds like this is an illusion. The shadows aren't real, it's just that he's making people believe an area is darker than it really is. Is that what's going on here? If it is, does this magic still work on things like robots, zombies, and other mindless creatures?
