| Nathaniel Greenthorne Nathaniel Greenthorne Nickname: Nate Age: 19 Apparent Age: 18 Race: Half Demon Affiliates: Demon Slayers, Vinx Gender: Male Hair color/style: Short, caramel brown hair. Eyes: Bright green Weight: 148 lbs. Height: 5'7'' Appearance: Physical Features- Nathan's bright green eyes are boyish and curious, rarely fixated on one thing for more than a minute. He has the muscles of a well worked farmboy, though he lacks the full frame and weight of a man. His light brown hair is rarely combed, his bangs falling carelessly across his forehead. Though he used to have a good tan, his vampiric encounter has turned his skin a smooth and pale white. He has a sturdy, yet boyish square face with bright white teeth, his incisors being unnaturally sharp. Clothing- Nathan wears a dark maroon overcoat that extends a few inches past the knee. Its buttons line the chest until it reaches his belt, where it splits in the front and back. This serves to conceal the gun and stake that he wears-- the sword scabbard is worn on the back outside of the coat. Underneath that coat, he wears dark brown trousers and a plain, white collared shirt with small brown buttons. Body- Tall and firm in frame, Nathan has well worked hands and a sunny smile. The dusty scent that comes off of him is usually tainted with Rosemary. Weapons: Nathan is quite new to the business of slaying, and has only been equipped with three essential weapons. Like any typical Demon Slayer, his weapons are also made mostly out of silver, a well known purifier of evil. Slasher- A fencing sword formed in the style of an Sabre, which is a curved, single-edged foil. It's about 3’4’’ long. The sword itself is formed from an alloy of silver and steel, which is kept in a dark maroon sheath. The sword is carried in a shoulder belt that crosses diagonally across his chest, resting on his back. The hilt of the blade has a large steel gaurd that curves across it to cover the knuckles. Engraved into the blade is the Latin motto of the slayers: "In hoc signo vincit" (Under this sign [the cross of God] thou shalt conquer.) Revolver- Nathan carries a small black revolver whose leather holster rests on a dark brown belt on his waist. There are two packs of ammo on the belt across his chest-- one for steel bullets and one for silver. Silver Stake- A collapsible 2 foot long stake made of pure silver. It has a grip on the thick, blunt end, which is reinforced with carved bumps to keep the hand from slipping. When collapsed, it is no longer than a foot, and a small, ovular button on the hilt springs the tip of the stake out. Engraved onto the hilt are ancient symbols which bless the staff with holy magic. This rests in a holster on Nathan's right, held on the right side of the belt that his gun rests on. Armor: Leather- Nathan wears dark maroon leather gloves that extend halfway up his arms; they also have mystic symbols carved on the inside. While this does not make it impossible for cursed weapons to penetrate it, cursed objects will be burned and corroded when touched with them. His brown leather boots are tough, but not reinforced with magic. His thick leather coat provides protection for his torso and upper legs, with enough flexibility to keep from hindering him in battle. Just like his gloves, his coat is also blessed to keep demons away. Strengths: Reflex- As a Half Vampire, Nathan has inherited the traditional “supernatural” reflexes, which include superior senses to that of a human’s. He can hear whispering through a solid rock wall, see with perfect vision for great distances, and has a very strong sense of smell— especially for blood. He also has faster reaction speed to stimuli. This gives him a decided advantage against those who move at a normal pace, though he is not yet accustomed to it, nor is fully competent in using his supernatural abilities. Raw Strength- Nathan has inherited unnatural strength, allowing him to perform feats of power that would be impossible for other humans. This includes being able to jump distances of 32 ft (9.8m), as high as nine feet (274cm), and lift weights up to 1670lbs (757.5kg). However, as Nathan is a newly turned human and has little experience with such abilities, he can't quite test the limits of his full power. Still, he remains abnormally stronger than a normal human. Range- Nathan's weapons provide a versatile range to fight with, and though he is still a novice with them, he can fight competently at close and far distances. Poison/resistance to Disease- As a half vampire, Nathan has strong resistance to toxins, and will never age. He is not, however, impervious to poisons, and can in fact die from strong illnesses and poisons, though this will take much worse circumstances to harm him than it would a normal human. Blood Lust- Despite his lack of skill in vampiric abilities and combat, Nathan has an unusual tolerance for blood. Unlike most new vampries and half-vampires, the presence of exposed blood hardly bothers him. Though he still enjoys the taste of blood, he hardly seems to lust for it all. Weaknesses: Combat- Nathan has had only one year of formal training with the blade, gun, and stake. He is still a novice in the world of combat, whose techniques are easily bested by the skill of others. Humanity- As a half breed, Nathan does not have the full power of a vampire. He still has to breathe, still has to keep warm, and he cannot match another vampire’s full speed and power. Though he is on fairly equal ground with a newly formed vampire, older ones provide a much greater challenge. In such cases, he has to rely mostly on his weaponry. Holy Weapons- Nathan himself is impartial to the very weapons he carries. He has another odd resistance in this area, as he can weild his new holy weapons without a great deal of pain. Still, the presence of holy objects makes him uneasy, and strong exposure can cause skin rashes. Holy attacks of any kind will strike greater damage on him than a normal human, as he is a cursed creature. It also slows down the healing rate of his body's unnaturally fast recovery. Magic- Nathan has no defense against magical attacks, and is entirely vulnerable to holy magic. He has to rely on his speed to dodge magical attacks of any kind. Light- Though Nathan can walk in daylight and doesn’t have to sleep as long as a human, he still is vulnerable to light, particularly sunlight. It can burn his skin more readily than a human, and it takes his eyes longer to adjust to light and darkness. Weapon Rarity- The ammo and weapons which Nathan uses are expensive and rare. He has to make good judgment when using them, and often has to salvage what he can from his targets. Skills/Magic: Dark Sight- Another trait of the vampire, Nathan can see in the dark as if it were day. It does, however, take time for his eyesight to adjust to perfect darkness. Diet Versatility- Nathan can eat both food and blood. While he is naturally more partial to blood, he can still eat even vegetables with the greatest of ease. However, his body is effected immensely by his diet, and becomes much stronger and proficient when he drinks blood. When drinking blood, he doesn’t have to eat food at all, but he has to feed at least weekly, or he will become fairly psychotic. On a diet of plain food, Nathan’s vampire abilities become less prevalent, and his blood lust almost completely disappears. Though Nathan lacks the traditional fangs to suck blood, his sharp teeth can easily pierce human and animal flesh. He can bite into a prevalent vein and suck blood from there, allowing the person’s heart to do the majority of the work. This makes his drinking slower than the average vampire, but his bite is just as effective. When he bites and blood is released, certain capillaries in his mouth release a drug, or vampiric venom that works to sedate and calm the subject that he drinks blood from. The pain of his teeth is but a moment— the drug will quickly take effect to block the pain by inducing the victim’s system to release large amounts of dopamine (a neurotransmitter), thus hindering their moving capability and stimulating the pleasure center of the brain. Survival- Nathan is quite used to roughing it, and can hunt and forage without fear of starving. He also has experience with trapping and carving animals. Demonic Sense- Nathan has an uncanny ability to sense the presence of other dark creatures. He can sense them as far as three miles away, and has taken great care to be sensitive to such things (as it often implies an attack). It’s not a matter of strength of aura or magical presence— the sense is in the blood. Other vampires are particularly sensitive to him as well. Vampire Slayers- As part of a group, Nathan can call upon the aid of other Demon Slayers, who are scattered throughout the world. They easily exchange information and are quick to give aid, as they all share one common purpose: to protect the innocent from demons. Along with this, he also has strong ties to the Christian church, which provides much of the information and weaponry that Nathan uses. Regeneration- Nathan has an unnatural healing speed, which isn’t instant, but can be quick enough to save him from mortal wounds. It takes a good hour or so to completely heal minor scratches, and a broken bone will keep him down for about four days. Other equipment: Salt- The wonderful substance for all who fear the undead—Nathan carries the stuff in a medium sized pouch that is strapped to his belt (the one also attached to the stake). It’s useful for drawing protective circles, including circles which the undead cannot cross. Travelling Supplies- Nathan carries a good sized leather pack on his back, which lays on top of his scabbard. It has a few small cooking utinsils, vittles like biscuts and jerky, woolen gauze, medicinal ointments like St. Jhon's Wort, flint and steel, a water pouch, soap, and various other nessesities. Personality: Nathan is an easy-going fellow, similing and laughing whenever he can find the opportunity. He has a simple and innocent optimisim about himself, a warm air of friendliness that causes him to smile and wink at even some of the most disagreeable people. While he likes light chatter and good company, he doesn't have much experience in flirting. He understands a need when he sees it, like fixing a broken cartwheel or comforting a crying girl, but he doesn't do much more than cast sad glances at beggars and weary travellers. He prefers to mind his own business when it comes to the serious matters of others. He's also a genuine country boy whose curiosity extends to gears and mechanical devices. He does what he can to lighten up a heavy atmosphere, and sometimes doesn't seem to care about anything at all. He can be clumsy in both movement and words, sometimes stuck daydreaming about rescuing damsels or making a fortune. Though his current circumstances have alienated him from his family and people, he masks his discomforts with a smile and a joke. Likes: Dancing- Nathan loves loosing himself to a good song, dance, or conversation, and will easily choose loud and obnoxious company over dull silence. Warm Weather- Nathan is most comfortable in pleasantly warm weather, and likes to be outside riding horses or fishing when he can. Food- Nathan rarely has time to settle down to a decent meal and drink, and can be particularly edgy when he doesn't get enough to eat. Eating good, hot food generally puts him in a better mood. Dislikes: Crime- Nathan will go out of his way to correct ugly violence where he sees it, especially if there's a woman involved. Biography: Nathaniel Greenethorne was born in England to a rural town where most made their living off of crops and livestock. His family certainly wasn't rich, but they made a full and honest living by keeping feilds, pastures, and animals. Nathan learned to do the basic tasks of farming, building fences, caring for animals, and also enjoyed spending nights in the surrounding forest. Nathan had hardy parents and three other sisters. They were a tightly knit group who enjoyed attending parties and festivals, but never wandered much farther from their town. It was only Nathan and his father that left to sell goods in the city, leaving for a few days to visit the market. Apart with a few squabbles with other boys and an occasional few days of getting lost in the forest, Nathan didn't have much to worry about in his life. He fully expected to marry a girl from his town, take care of his family, and live out his final days on his family's farm. Disaster struck a few months after he turned eighteen. He had left to go on another camping bout in the nearby forest at the unfortunate time when a vampire was hunting around his town. Where it came from or why it was there he never found out--he was promptly beaten, attacked, and nearly had the blood sucked right out of him. The vampire was looking to increase its odds, and offered Nathan life if he would drink the blood of a vampire to become one. Unfortunately for both of them, Vinx (a Demon Slayer) was already hunting the creature, and managed to kill it before Nathan was turned. It was to the slayer's great surprise that he found that Nathan had that impossible mix of human and vampiric blood. After that incident, Vinx forced Nathan to take the Slayer's Vow, and had no choice but to remove Nathan from his family. Because of his newly inherited vampric traits, it was clear that Nathan could not return, and he had little choice but to become Vinx's slayer companion. It was under Vinx's direction that he started his training; he also obtained holy weapons from the church, beginning his slayer career. He still remains with Vinx to continue his training as they journey about the world searching for demons. History of the Demon Slayers: All Demon Slayers are half vampires. There are no exceptions. Each and every one of them has sworn a sacred vow to protect the innocent, and it is a vow that they uphold with their very lives. The group has existed for almost as long as vampires have, though they are certainly less in number because of the unique and rare way in which they are created. Their purpose is generally fed off from the circumstances in which they were turned, which are predictably violent, abhorrent events. They have all been assaulted by vampires and affected for eternity because of it, and none of them bear any fondness towards vampires because of this. Half Vampires are created when a subject’s blood is replaced with enough vampiric blood to biologically change them, but not enough to turn them fully. Such a balance is virtually impossible to create, and these instances have occurred only because of a bizarre mix of fate and luck. None of these subjects ever turn to become sadistic demons themselves— the Demon Slayers are too tightly knit a group for this to happen. They have an unnatural sense for finding each other, and there have been no known half vampires to have refused to make the Slayer’s Vow. Because of this, they have become a small, but terrorizing group to demons that traverse the world. Their numbers have never grown over one hundred (which is pretty small, considering the world’s population), due, of course, to their rare creation and dangerous profession. Demon Slayers work closely with the Christian church, though they are by no means on “friendly” terms with it. They are recognized as demons themselves, damned creatures that drink forbidden blood, but they are kept around because of their supernatural abilities. It is rare for any mortal to have the power to kill a vampire, and even half vampires are at a serious disadvantage. Their real power comes from their holy weapons, which are immensely effective against powerful, dark creatures. They are unforgiving soldiers of the night who are trained with incredible skill, which is only reinforced by their vampiric strength. Demon Slayers are the bane of all demonic and dark creatures, and are greatly hated for this. While those outside of the Demon Slayers have no understanding as to how they function and what they really do (Demon Slayers are often interpreted to be singular mercenaries that aspire to do God’s will), it’s not difficult for dark creatures to recognize that these “mercenaries” have the intent and power to kill them. For all these reasons, the Demon Slayers are a mysterious, isolated group that very, very few ever come to recognize. They disappear as quickly as they come, often leaving nothing behind to tell their story. Vampire Slayers rarely gather in large groups, but it is not unusual for them to work in pairs and small groups when teaching or gathering up power to fight a particularly large enemy. They’re also known to wear similar clothes and wield similar weapons— a Slayer is easily recognized if one knows what to look for. Each of them has contact with the Christian church, though only a few monks and priests even know of their existence.
