Re: Ponyo
It looks cute. But what is the story's point?
I seen it earlier today before I went for volleyball tryouts today, I thought it was pointless to watch. :/ |

The trailer is, indeed, largely incoherent. Apparently the movie is excellent, though.

Re: Ponyo
There are other trailers that go a bit more in depth. I think the line "Ponyo, you're the only one that can save the world!" makes the plot pretty clear...along with the fact that I've read it's like The Little Mermaid. Do your research!

Ponyo (On The Cliff) Coming to THEATERS August 14th
I have been seeing television ads for this new movie, and personally I can't wait. Not only is Miyazaki creating yet another great work of animated genius, but it's probably the only motion picture to be produced in a traditional animation style since the old days of Disney - you know, back when they didn't screw around. It's an art style I missed for so long on the big screen, that I can't believe it's finally coming back. And who better to make a big comeback than Hayao Miyazaki, himself?
The one thing I do dread is the voice-acting. As far as I know, they have some big names from Hollywood playing the characters: Liam Neeson, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Cate Blanchett - all who I personally think can get the job done the way it should be. But the main characters, I am not too happy about. Frankie Jonas, the youngest brother of the JoBros, and Noah Cyrus, the young sister of Miley Cyrus, as well as Selena Gomez - all who are Disney actors/actresses - are playing major roles. Of course this movie is being released in North America under Disney's name, but I just have to ask: WHY? I hope I'm wrong, but every Disney child star has very little to no talent, so I am very skeptical about this. But for the young siblings of very horrible celebrities, this is their first big debut, so I do hope that they do well for our sake. Anyway, that's just me. I'm too old to be watching this in public, though XD

Re: Ponyo
I liked the movie that miyazaki made called "spirited away"
And I noticed that they're putting it up through disney channel. Why the **** would they put an anime movie by disney channel? I mean seriously, that network already pisses me off. |

Like, they pay for the translation and dubbing, and they get to slap their name on it?

Disney has done all the translating, subtitling, and dubbing for all current releases of every single Miyazaki film. This is no different from ADV or Funimation putting their logo at the start of a release that they've translated. Plus, of course, most parents won't buy animated films unless they've got the Disney name on them, so it greatly helps to increase sales over here. And what, exactly, is the problem with anime?

Re: Ponyo
From what I remember, the trailer has nothing to do with the actual movie (which, I admit, I watched subtitled online). They say things like "save the world" and stuff that I don't remember ever being in the movie at all. There was no world-saving. Either that or the subtitles I watched were horribly off.
Anyway, it was indeed a good movie (and I'm interested in seeing it in English on the big screen), but one of the biggest things that captured me about the movie was the animation. They used CG effects sparingly, if at all-- nearly everything in the film was hand-drawn. Amazing.
