Favorite Comic Publisher Thread

From Marvel to Dark Horse, there are many comic publishers. I want to get your opinions on your personal favorite. Could it be DC? Marvel? Most have all produced memorable famous super heroes and super villains.

Why do you like this publisher more then the others?

Any particular Hero or Villain that you favor from this publisher?

Do you like more then one?

Re: Favorite Comic Publisher Thread

Most of my favorite super heroes are from Marvel. I believe they have the most original characters from what I've seen.

Re: Favorite Comic Publisher Thread

I probably read more Marvel series' than anything. The only DC stuff I have is a couple Batman books, and I've read a little Green Lantern stuff. But mostly I just have a hard time getting deep into the DC mythos, I just like the characters Marvel offers more, for the most part. Joss Whedon put it best,

"With that one big exception, DC's heroes are from a different era. They're from the era when they were creating gods. And the thing that made Marvel extraordinary was that they created people. Their characters didn't living in mythical cities, they lived in New York. They absolutely were a part of the world. Peter Parker's character was a tortured adolescent. DC's characters, like Wonder Woman and Superman and Green Lantern, were all very much removed from humanity. Batman was the only character they had who was so rooted in pain, that had that same gift that the Marvel characters had, which was that gift of humanity that we can relate to."

But on the other hand, DC's imprint meant for adults and/or teens, Vertigo, publishes(d) some awesome stuff. Such as Y: The Last Man, Preacher, 100 Bullets and Fables. So for that, its awesome.

Re: Favorite Comic Publisher Thread

1.) Marvel has a huge variety of original characters, all of them seemingly superpowered...
2.) DC is good only for their Batman and Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta) Universes.
3.) Darkhorse has only Hellboy
4.) Image comics has Todd M's Spawn

Re: Favorite Comic Publisher Thread

The only American comics I've read are published by Vertigo (is that Marvel?).

O.o

I'm not into superheroes, but there seem to be a number of Vertigo titles that aren't superhero-related.

Re: Favorite Comic Publisher Thread

Vertigo is an imprint of DC (which I said in my post, way to read the thread, Jinny).

Since it is geared towards adults and people in their late teens, it doesn't really have a lot of 'superheroes' in the general sense of the word, though most of the books still contain supernatural elements. It also has books with lots of cursing, some nudity, and in some cases very very graphic scenes.

Some of the violence is really uncecessary; I didn't think the sex scenes in Fables was that extreme, though.

And I didn't read all the way through your post. I'm lazy (and had to make dinner).

Re: Favorite Comic Publisher Thread

Excuses, excuses.

If you want to see graphic, graphic violence (as well as overall just graphic images), Preacher is the Vertigo title you'd look at. I don't even know if Quinton Tarantino himself could dream up some of the stuff in that book in his darkest nightmares.

Fables has some nudity, but it definitely isn't overly graphic at all. I don't even find the violence to be that troublesome, it's no more violent than any other action-oriented series. Only one thing really shocked me as being graphic, and the moment would not have worked if it wasn't exactly the way it was, so I don't mind.

Re: Favorite Comic Publisher Thread

I grew up watching Marvel movies and cartoons, playing Marvel games, and reading Marvel Comics so it should be obvious my favorite COmic publisher is Viz Media.

Re: Favorite Comic Publisher Thread

Marvel is my favorite. I like DC for Batman/Superman and a few others, but I think Marvel really does it for me.

I think both companies have great characters but I think Marvel tends to be a little more creative.. Maybe it's just me.
