Anime Dub Vs. Sub

Just as the title says, which is better?

I personally like dub better. If I wanted to read an anime I would rather just read the manga.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

I can't help but think this may have been inspired by another thread Anyways, I prefer dub but only if it's a good one. I'd rather read subtitles than put up with a particularly bad dub,

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

^^^Yes this tread was partly inspired by your thread but I was thinking about doing this anyway so you kinda just inspired to go through with it. I understand where your coming from but most dub now-a-days are good, they have gotten better at it. The only anime that I own thats subbed is Yami To Boushi To Han No Tabibito. The only reason why I have it in subbed is because it was never dubbed. This is fine as long as the anime is only in Japanese but if has been dub I would rather watch that version.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

Most of the time I prefer subbed, since it fits the nature of the story and characters correctly, and the original Japanese versions have the story of the particular anime 100% correct.
Example: One Piece was completely ruined in its various dubs.

There are of course exceptions, such as Dragonball Z/GT, the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime and Cowboy Bebop, which all sound fantastic with dubs and have their original story intact.

What do you mean by 100% correct, its the same story if its dubed they just different words to convey the same thing. I never really got into One Piece how did they mess it up?

4kids Entertainment - They molested the soundtrack, cut out important plot points and whole episodes, edited out things like guns and cigarettes and so on. When the discussion of dubs vs. subs pops up, their version of One Piece is what usually comes up as a negative towards the dub's argument.

Funimation eventually got the series.. Their voice actors are exceptional, the scripts are tight and they've been doing the whole thing uncut ever since.

Almost all dubs are retarded and I refuse to watch them. If there isn't a sub of an anime, I don't watch the anime.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

I would rather watch an anime dubbed in English, but both aren't the greatest. The problem I see with both is that in Japanese, the voice-acting is overdone, and in English, the voice-acting is underdone. At least in English, there are exceptions, but I just don't see the same thing with Japanese dubbing.

The best English dubbing I've seen so far was in Full Metal Panic, Cowboy Bebop, and Dragonball Z. I would say Black Lagoon, but the damn chinese woman ruins it.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

I prefer subbed. The script is all original (I think), and I find some dubbed animes to be horrible upon watching them. Especially if you watched the subbed version first.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

Depends. If the dub in question is decent, I'll take the dub; if it's god-awful, I'll go with subs. Or I probably wouldn't bother with it at all.

Meh, what do I care; I'm not a big fan of anime to begin with.

I prefer sub better. I'm a purist and I'd like to see things in its original form not something that is altered. Although I have nothing against dubs either.

I SMELL A WEABOO!

Normally for me, since I don't like reading, I prefer dubs. However, if the company that does the dubbing is pure on censorship, removing music, and that good ♥♥♥♥, then it's the sub for me.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

I try to watch the dub of an anime if it's just as good or better than the Japanese since I like listening to things in my first language. On average, though, I'd say subs are usually better.

60% of animes are better subbed.
35% have equally good subbed and dubbed versions.
5% of anime is better dubbed.

I wish. I've seen four different animes, and I ended all four halfway and didn't bother finishing them (Naruto, Death Note, Desert Punk, Black Butler)... hardly what I'd constitute being a weeaboo. Hell, I wouldn't know the capital of Japan unless it was me actually studying geography in 8th grade.

But I can't stand Naruto when Sakura pronounces his name like "Nah-rooeh-tuuuehesrfh", Death Note's "I'll take a potato chip... and eat it!", etc. It feels very ♥♥♥♥♥y.

It's more of me being a purist than anything. Another bonus is that it usually isn't censored.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

I definitely would prefer to watch subs more often, but the downside to it is that I can't really watch the anime while I read what they're saying. I would much prefer to watch subs when I can actually understand japanese. So my vote goes to the dubs, since I watch them unless the voice acting makes my ears bleed.

And I hate that sometimes things in the Japanese version are gutted in dubs. The most annoying one so far is in Fruits Basket.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

I usually roll with dubs unless it's an ongoing series or it hasn't been brought over yet. The biggest downside to that is that you'll sometimes miss some pretty hilarious stuff that was ironed out in the translation.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

It depends, if it's a series like Full Metal Alchemist, or death Note then the dubbed version is fine because the dubbing company did everything right. but then you have the shows that 4Kids got their dirty hands on. In that case, It's always best to watch the sub unless you can find an uncut dub.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

Depends.

I usually prefer subs just because dubs tend to have very poor acting and match the plot less.
Now, the Japanese track may also be horribly acted but since I can't tell, but still get a good feel for character's emotions, it's a net gain for me.

Now, there are a couple of exceptions, such as the later Disney dubs of Ghibli films and Cowboy Bebop, which have dub tracks that are probably better than the original Japanese, but those are rare.

It really depends on me mostly.
I like sub's because I like listening to the Japanese voices.
I like dub's because I like would like to stop reading sub's sometimes...

I would say both.
