I refer you to the VGcats strip about 4kids and their career as butchers which I'm entirely to lazy to track down right now. I mean come on......lollipops and green guns.............ouch. Cowboy bebop did indeed sound fantastic, you could hear the emotions in the voice tones and what. But SO many dubs I hear, even now-a-days, you can just see a guy reading from a script right in front of him. It's in those situations that a Sub is much preferred over the dub.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

There's nothing inherently superior about subs, it's just that many dubs are just plain bad. Some make me wince listening to them.

If the dub is good and doesn't censor anything, however, I'll watch that, since I prefer to be able to understand the spoken language.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

I don't watch massive amounts of anime but I usually watch it subbed. It is easier to find subbed versions online plus I tend to like the voices used for the characters.

Ideally, dubs. However, since most English voice actors for anime sound more like they're portraying cartoon characters than real people, I'll stick with subs.

Both subs and dubs have that problem. Japanese voice-acting is guilty of overacting and characters sound like Japanese stereotypes. English dubbing is just as you said it was; they sound like cartoon characters and not actual people.

The two are of equal quality. It's just the quantity of that sort of quality is in more of one (English) than the other (Japanese).

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

To people that of mentioned Black Lagoon, if you think about it the show should be in english because Dutch, Revy, and Benny are all American and Rock is a Japanese business man so he would most likely know english anyway.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

I would compare the first dubbed episode to the first subbed episode, and go from there.
Usually, though, I am too lazy to read subtitles, so I just watch the dub, no matter how bad it is.

That would make sense, but realistically no one would take that into consideration. But it was damn well done in English, nonetheless.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

If the dub doesn't suck, I vastly prefer that.
Although I enjoy reading along, the Japanese usually wears on my nerves depending on the show. So I'll usually only watch a subbed video under one of three conditions:

1.) The voice-acting in the dub is terrible or unfitting.
2.) The censorship is entirely stupid (although this doesn't actually bother me too much on a plot level, for two reasons... Usually I still know what they're getting at, even through the censorship, and usually the only censored shows are kids' shows, so this doesn't often affect me anyway).
3). I can't find a dubbed version. There I don't really have a choice.

Also, if you're on the Internet watching it, subs tend to be entirely unofficial and equally as bad as some of the English dubs (albeit in different ways).

Also, Sanji's lollipop was fricking hilarious. I don't watch the show, but I'd take that over the cigarette any day. At first I thought it was just a unique quirk for the character, since it fit in with the show's goofy presentation.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

It depends entirely on what's available and whether I think the voices fit.

Some Anime has yet to be dubbed, and because I hate waiting I'll watch the subs until it comes out with a dub (if it does at all). Some anime I prefer subbed, but I always watch the sub/dub multiple times before deciding. I love the .hack//Sign sub.

I can't even watch the Rurouni Kenshin sub for five minutes. Everyone sounds like a five-year-old girl. Other shows I can go both ways. It really depends. I am not picky.

So true there. Every "wise old man" and "clumsy female protagonist" sound just about the same.

Depends, for example:

Bleach is better in sub

Hellsing is better in dub

Rule of thumb: go sub
Exceptions exist

I am not saying that its bad, I would just like to know more about why Zoltar thinks so because I have friends and family that watch it in sub as well and they never give a reason other bieng able to watch it at the same pace as the Japanese.

I used to find subs absolutely annoying. Now, I really don't.

Out of all the shows I've seen so far, DBZ is the most annoying to me. Not just because of the voices, but the major music difference. >_> But I will still go to dubs just to try it out. And vice versa.

You see and hear what is meant to be heard, if the some is good of course.

I find SUB better. probably because nothing is really changed for the audience viewing it, Dub as a long history of that.

Re: Anime Dub Vs. Sub

Yeah, for some shows, the English voice actors overdo it. Resulting in it being... not all that great. Such as 4Kids' dubbing. But a good example of English overdoing, for me, would be Kanon (2006). Please don't get me started.
