Critique my cartoons, please.

I'm am very passionate about creating expressive characters and fantastic environments, but I'm still just an amatuer artist who doesn't exactly succeed in creating either of those. Ever since I can remember, the idea of creating my own worlds has really intrigued me, but I'm not quite there yet. I don't think I'm terrible, but I still lack the skills to draw the types of people and places I dream of.

So I really need the help of other artists. I really need some critiques on my work! Don't be afraid to point anything out, telling me that a leg looks weird, or that a background is a bit bland will only help me become the artist I strive to become.

Here are my most recent drawing. Please drop comments and constructive criticism!

The Not So Cautious Adventurer:

Link Battles a Forest Moblin:

Self Portrait:

Some Link sketch I finished an hour or so ago:

Rejected DC Super Hero: Bogey Man

(I'll be updating this thread with new drawings as well.)

I'm going for a certain type of style. I'm a big fan of rounder edges rather than the sharp, angular look modern cartoons are going for. I almost like thinks to look... loopy. I'm not sure how to explain it, but I just try to use straight lines as little as possible.

And this shows really well. :3

I really, really, really love your art. It's a style all your own, and you're really good.

What do you use to color?

You seem to nail it all pretty well. Sketching, coloring, etc. Very nice. =D

Re: Critique my cartoons, please.

Thank you.

I use Prisma color markers, and for my self portrait and Link sketch, I saturated the colors in PhotoImpact Pro (the poor man's Photoshop). Though, I really want to learn to use water colors. Katsuya Terada is a master of watercoloring (and of doing "loopy", rounder lines), and his Zelda Nintendo Power art is very inspiring.

Wow...just wow.

The first once it like the type of drawing you would see in a children's book. I absolutely love it; and the coloring is fantastic!

Have you ever considered becoming an Illustrator?

They're gorgeous. I love your style. On the first picture, you had some anatomy problems upstairs, but I think that could just be the way you tend to draw things. you're very talented! Keep it up!

It would be a fun gig, but my goal is to do designs for games and cartoons. Maybe even comic books, as well.

Those are really awesome! The first one kinda reminds me of the art style of animated films such as the Hobbit and the Last Unicorn! The second one is pretty amazing. Id love to see that colored! I like your style! It has an old school vibe to it. I rarely see that sort of style around anymore!
The Link sketch reminds me a bit of the old Valiant Zelda comics only better done!

Just awesome. Great gallery, I like your sense of ambition, too. I can tell you're a truly creative person. It's great how you have your own style instead of trying to emulate others' like a lot of people do, I mean, even your fan art has your own touch to it. Keep it up.

The self portrait vaguely reminds me of a character called Guybrush Threepwood.

The boobs look weird. Think they've got too big a space between them. Atleast you weren't like most people and didn't make them look like balloons. xD

I actually drew it after watching FernGully for the first time since I was a child. I absolutely love the art style in that film. If a Zelda cartoon was ever made now, I'd want those artists to work on it.

Thank you! I'm really glad you said that because I have been trying to go for a more 80s/90s style of cartoon look. I think animation was in its prime then.

Heh, thanks. Those Valiant comics are great in an old cheesy kind of way.

Much appreciated. While there are a lot of artists that inspire me, I'm very serious about developing my own, distinct style. I have a very long way to go (I still don't fully understand the human anatomy, and I need a lot of help when it comes to drawing creatures and animals) but I feel I'm somewhere on the right track. Even if I am at the beginning of that track.

Haha! Come to think of it, I did draw a couple comics. They are year or so old, but I may just upload them in order to buy me some more time to draw new stuff to upload here.

Ah! I'm glad you pointed that out. I was wondering why the upper body looked a little weird. I knew the shoulders were a bit off, but I didn't notice the boobs until now. Boobs are really hard to draw for some reason, but I'm going to practice on the whole torso. I have the most problems with the human torso, and right where the limbs connect (and hands, and feel... actually, it's the entire body that gives me trouble). I'm really going to practice. I recently bought several anatomy books, and I have nothing to do tomorrow... so, I guess tomorrow will be practice, practice, practice!

I'll try to upload something else tomorrow. Like I said, if I have nothing new I'm willing to show, I'll just upload those two comics I was talking about in order to buy me more time. These comics were drawn over a year ago, so they are pretty flawed, but I think they can be enjoyed. I certainly would like feedback and critiques on how I tell the story and if my character's expressions work or not.

Re: Critique my cartoons, please.

Thanks for the complements, everyone!

Here is a new one. It's not my best work, but it was a hard pose for me to get down. So, in that sense, I guess I am proud of it. The character was drawn in late July, but I added the background today. Well, I cheated. It's not a real background, but it's better than plain white.

With A Sword Ridiculous Enough for an RPG:

^I don't know what it is, but the face looks wrong. And I obviously need some pointers when it comes to inking and cross-hatching.

Oh, and here are the two comics I drew last year!

Slimax and The Rookies Solve the Corn Mystery
Page 1
Page 2
Page 3

Happy Times with Dolls
Page 1
Page 2
Page 3

Sorry for linking you to my Deviant Art for the comics, but I really didn't want to re upload them all a second time.

Please comment and critique!

This is what cartoons are all about.
All I can really say there is don't be afraid to experiment. Doodle until your hands fall off. I suck royally at a lot of things-- backgrounds in particular-- but I enjoy trying out different ways of doing them. I also suck at Photoshop, but I like messing around with it. I'll eventually get better.

But you, sir, are definitely heading in the right direction. If I can think of any constructive criticism later, I'll let you know, but I've got nothing right now.
