Tonchiki's World of Doodletude and Artaphernalia

I remember in my first post here, I said something along the lines of "I might post some art whenever I get around to it". Well, here we are, almost two years later, and I'm putting some stuff up here for the first time. And I STILL can't show you much.

I'll try to make this quick: I do all sorts of things, mostly drawing cartoons on paper and making animations or comics in Flash. I have a lot of my own series (a series being a single continuity, like a bunch of animated episodes or a bunch of comic chapters) floating around in my head, all waiting to get done. Since I'm usually doing everything myself, I also have to make the music myself, though I am not a musician (and know pretty much jack about music in general). Problem is, until I get at least the first part of a series done, I'm keeping that stuff to myself. So the only things I have to show off are random ones that don't really have to do with much.

All I really have for now are random doodles from my notebook at school. I kid you not. I have tons of these. And yes, I doodle on lined paper. Deal with it. So don't critique these as if they're supposed to be finished-- they're strictly doodles (which is more evident in some than others).

But speaking of criticism... please give me some. It doesn't help anyone to hear "these suck" or "these are awesome". Don't hold back because they're doodles, either-- just don't tell me that there's no shading or whatever, because I know that.

Man, stop talking. Here we go.

DOODLES

I can only fit a certain amount of images in one post, so as many newer images as possible are thumbnails, while the rest are links. I just moved my entire album to Photobucket (Imageshack can suck a big one), so I figured I'd do that too.

Grapple Guy
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...es/scan029.jpg
^ An old doodle from, like, two Februaries ago. Some random guy with some sort of grappling hook (by the way, I know the hook wouldn't curve like that, I just had to fit it on the page). The text I whited out were just notes to myself that don't matter.

Yo-Yo Kid
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...es/scan031.jpg
^ Our young friend here is pals with the grappling hook kid. He has a yo-yo for a weapon (kinda like Ness). Don't ask me what those things on his shoulders are; I have no idea.

Thief Dude
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...es/scan034.jpg
^ Another guy of the same group. He's the archetypal thief.

LIES!!
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...es/scan037.jpg
^ I was bored and this was funny.

Four Swords 01
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...es/scan063.jpg
^ Who doesn't have their own take on Four Swords? I whited out the subtitle, 'cause if and when I make this (it's a comic), I'll reveal it then. I dunno what's up with Vaati; I guess I didn't feel like finishing him. Left to right is Red, Blue, and Purple, with Green for the full body at the bottom. Trivia: They look different because the comic was originally going to be shaded by pencil, and they would have been pretty indistinguishable.

Cowboy Crawdad
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...es/scan108.jpg
^ I love this guy. He sneaks into my doodles every once in a while, because cowboy stereotypes are amazingly fun to draw. I've taken to calling him Cowboy Crawdad for absolutely no reason other than the fact that it sounds stupidly cool.

DQ-eqsue Kid
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...es/scan124.jpg
^ And here we have some guy that looks like that kid from Dragon Quest VIII.

Ty the Time Manager
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a.../scan0013s.jpg
^ This is Ty the Time Manager. This came out of a mandatory Freshman Seminar class that told you how to be a successful college student. You know, like they did all the freakin' time in high school.

Vs. Shoulders, Round One
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/scan0041.jpg
^ This is me gearing up for a fierce battle with a foe that hath impeded me for years... Shoulders. Unfortunately, I cut out the characters I used to practice, because I'm not revealing them quite yet. Needless to say, the battle didn't go too well.

Vs. Shoulders, Round Two
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/scan0046.jpg
^ This was a bit later, and I used generic characters to practice this time. The shoulders still suck, but they're a little better than what they were before. Tied, 1-1! I never made a third picture to go with this. Stalemate, indeed.

Failed Anthro
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/scan0056.jpg
^ I tried-- badly-- to draw my own anthro(pomorphic) character. I almost never draw animal characters, and I figured that even though I was out of my element, I'd like to give it a try. ...Yeah, it kinda looks like all my other characters, only with a bigger nose and fur.

Crazy Train
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/scan0064.jpg
^ This masterpiece was scrawled down in the middle of class, during GDC when Spirit Tracks was announced. I was amused at Link's occupation.

Random Bonanza
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/scan0033.jpg
^ Dunno if I already have one up there, but this is what I refer to as a "random page", which is basically the most non sequitur/insane things I can think of on one page.
I love drawing Waluigi. XD

Nameless
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/scan109t.jpg
^ Just some completely nameless, random character I doodled, with intent from the beginning to make it a completely random character. No idea. The armbands make him remind me of MegaMan.

Random Characters
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...es/scan125.jpg
^ This is incredibly light. It's just a couple more random character designs I just doodled on the spot. Nothing really to them.

Glass Joe
http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/a...assjoe0102.jpg
^ It's Glass Joe, from Punch-Out!!
This thing is a mess, because I'm not used to doodling in Paint, and it got extremely aggravating to clean up after the initial sketch. I think I'll stick to Flash, thanks.

Ty the Time Manager 02

^ Yeah, Flash, that's the ticket.
Ty the Time Manager approves.

Four Swords 02

^ Four Swords!
Done in Flash. This picture's pretty old, though (over a year).

Sherlock Holmes and Watson

^ Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.
Yyyeah, I drew this for a report in high school once.
Not much about it to talk about.
(I'm running out of showable drawings right now...)

Four Swords 03

It's Four Swords again.
I messed with the brightness and contrast to make it easier to see (it was originally pretty light).

I swear, every time I draw the Four Sword it gets bigger and more proportionally incorrect. It looks like a big club now.

Paper Zelda

A friend of mine and I have been tossing around ideas for a Paper Zelda. I'm sure it's been thought of before, but meh. I'm considering doing it, too (in Flash). We're getting some fun ideas.

Random Glasses Kid

Some random kid. Yeah, it sucks, and I mean more than most of my doodles. Whenever I try to create a character with really no specific idea in mind beforehand, they always end up being stupidly generic, anime-ish cliches. Boring.

Waluigi and Wario

Awful doodle of Waluigi and Wario. You can tell I totally stopped caring as soon as I started drawing Wario's body.
Whatever, I love drawing Waluigi though.

Random Bonanza 02

Page of random doodles again.

Spontaneous kid doodle that has to do with a concept for a possible future project.

Live model sketches

HOLY CRAP IT AIN'T CARTOONS
Yeah, this was in school, sketching from a live model (nude, but there's none in the sketches, I didn't get that far). These suck basically because I suck at drawing from life and I was rusty on top of that. But these are probably closer to being critique-able than the cartoon doodles. I also can't shake the cartooniness when I try to draw from life, and I hate it.

^ Cowboy Crawdad rides again. Here he dun got hisself appointed honorary temporary just-in-case sheriff-but-not of this here dustbowl known as Bonedusk.
I dunno what's up with that sheriff there. I didn't plan him out at all-- I had no clue what he'd look like, so I just started drawing this completely scattershot thing until that formed. So his proportions are inconsistent for his body type (he should probably be more rotund in the waist and it should probably be farther down).
Also I can't draw guns off the top of my head to save my life

vvv NEW vvv

Baxter Blues and Roxanne Darrow, meant to be two characters of probably many named after musical genres. Because, you know, that hasn't been done a million times.
Baxter's obviously named after music via his last name, Blues, and Roxanne is due to her nickname, Rox. Rox's face is kinda weird because I initially drew it too big and had to erase it and do it smaller, thereby destroying any semblance of order it had. And don't ask me how Baxter can fit his huge hands into that tiny hoodie pocket.
Basically these two were just drawn off the top of my head, which is why they look so crappy and generic.

This was my crappy entry in the Halloween art contest here. It's my own rendition of Jack, King of Halloween, from Animal Crossing. God, that background sucks nuts. I'm terrible with Photoshop.

I might throw some more doodles up here later on.

MUSIC

Now, the next part. Here I guess I can put some music I've made. I use the demo version of FL Studio 6, with various free soundfonts I find on
the Internet. All of this I do from scratch (I don't rearrange instruments in people's MIDIs, only lame-os do that).

Now, I am NOT a musician. I don't really know all that much about music. But since I do these cartoons/games/whatever
myself, I have to make my own music for them, as well (this is also why most of my music is cut at the end-- it's supposed to
loop). So, please excuse my poor excuses for music. (But obviously, don't feel you have to go easy on them. Tell it to me
straight!)

Untitled 92
The "untitled" music to me is the equivalent of a musical "doodle". That is, most of them are unfinished and rough, and I only
did them because I was bored and screwing around with FL Studio. I guess this one was supposed to feel like some sort of
town theme for a game or something.

Untitled 101
Yeah, I was messing around trying to make things sound like electric guitars for, like, a game's boss theme or something. The
leads never ever sound right unless you use an actual guitar, so meh. Also unfinished... I think...

Untitled 103
I think this was supposed to be a theme for a snobby person or something like that... Yeah, you can probably guess the type.
Like, the old, fat ladies that wear those ridiculous hats and use words like "droll"... Whatever.

Super Mario Bros.
Here, for fun, I just tried to re-create the original Mario Bros. theme using default FL Studio instruments from scratch. For the
most part, I think it went well, but in the beginning, it sounds like I forgot to add the second lead. Whoops.

Ashley's Theme
I remade Ashley's Theme from WarioWare: Touched! for some reason. I think I was angry at Brawl for destroying it.

Mushroom Scratchin'
I was screwing around with that Wave Traveller plugin in FL Studio, and this came out. Wasn't really trying to make it good or
anything, but it makes me smile.

Heads Up, Mario!
At one point a long time ago I had a Paper Mario fan game planned. This was the music I created for the battles back then. I hope you
hear the song reference in there. It's hard to miss. Also, this one got compressed, so the quality is worse than the others.
Sorry.

Littleroot Town
I love this song in Pokemon RSE, and wanted to remake it with better quality while sticking close to the source. I didn't finish
it, though, so it just stops abruptly.

Twoson
I remade this different version of Twoson from EarthBound. I made it half for fun, and half for a potential project that probably
won't ever happen. You never know, though. This one's compressed too-- sorry.

Testimony Allegro 2004
I remade this from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney-- Trials and Tribulations. This was actually something I used in an animated
Flash project I made in high school. Yeah, I referenced Phoenix Wright in a school project. Whoo, I'm a nerd.

Splash Woman
I remade Splash Woman from MegaMan 9 'cause it's one of the coolest songs in the game.

Zelda Theme
An actual Zelda song! On a Zelda site! Yeah, this one is old, and doesn't transition very well. You'll see what I mean.

Linebeck's Theme
This is another old one. Linebeck was the man.

Vaati Transfigured
From the Minish Cap, this is a simple loop of one of the final battle themes. If there was one thing the Minish Cap stood out
for, it was the music.

Song of Storms
Yeah, the sound effects are cheesy. Bite me. I dunno what I really wanted to do with this one, it just kinda happened.

Toxic Seahorse Duet
This happened for no reason. I was just fooling around with guitar sounds, and added the Toxic Seahorse (MegaMan X3) melody to it because it popped into my head in the middle of it.

Untitled 66
An older "untitled" musical doodle. This one's a generic beach-sounding theme. It's basically done, too; I just have nothing to use it for yet. So it remains untitled.

Animal Crossing Remade Music Demo
Music from the Animal Crossing games that were remade from scratch, by ear, by yours truly. I'm working on an animated series related to Animal Crossing, so I had to remake lots of the games' music to be consistent with my own original music. This is a short mash of some of them (but not even close to all).

DiAF Original Music Demo
This is a short demo of some original music I made up myself to go with the aforementioned Animal Crossing cartoon. Lots of it is obsolete (I've since replaced many of the older instruments), but I wasn't bothered enough to make a new reel.
I've got a ton more songs made for this series (over 100 so far, both original and from the games).

Cinder Crater
This was for a game idea I had. I occasionally tinker around with the coding, that one day I might finish the game. It would be an upbeat side-scroller. This music was for the volcano level, Cinder Crater.

Floaport
For the same game as Cinder Crater was, this song was for Floaport, the hero's home town. It was, as you can guess, a port town.

Aston's Theme
This original song is a theme to a character in a series of mine that has to do with ghosts. This character actually is a ghost. The series's musical style is commonly like this, being simple and kinda repetitive in its structure. It also commonly mixes orchestral and synthetic instruments.

Animal Crossing N64/GC Title Theme
I love this song, and I'm pretty happy with how this copy turned out, especially considering I had to do it from scratch by ear.

Animal Crossing Wild World/City Folk/LGTTC Theme
Wild World's theme. Man, those slightly dissonant chords killed me (and I still don't think I got them quite right, but whatever). Now I fixed it-- the newer version has a better solo guitar than the other one I made.

Game Plan
For my animated series involving paranormal investigation. This is a simple tune that would chime in when they're going over details of the case among themselves.

Hydrocity Act 02
This is a really old one I made, yet I still don't really dislike how it sounds now.
Granted, if I updated the instruments it'd sound a lot better.

EarthBound's Eight Melodies

I love EB's Sound Stone tune (more then Mother's, eight melodies, even). I didn't really have any clue how to end it, so the end just sucks.

The Glitz Pit
I tried recreating the Glitz Pit from Paper Mario:TTYD. Why? Dunno.

Theme of Cowboy Crawdad
Yeah, remember Cowboy Crawdad? I made a theme song for him, for no reason whatsoever. This is just an instrumental version (since I have no one to sing the song really), but I did make up lyrics to it.

Mario Mix (Unfinished)
This was a tribute that I never finished. It has some songs from Donkey Kong, SMB, and SMB2 (Doki Doki Panic). It's a really old one, so the instruments suck. Also, I apparently decided not to put in the Bowser level music for the SMB mix.

AC:WW 08PM Guitar

This is just a test. I just imported my previously-made file of WW's 08PM and tried out this guitar soundfont I forgot I had. I think it sounds pretty good. It's probably the only guitar font I have that's useful for melodies.

Contact Battle
Unfinished. This is the battle music from the DS game Contact.

Animal Crossing Winter Music Demo
This is a collection of a few songs I remade from the Animal Crossing games and winterized them. What does "winterize" mean? Well, to me, it means add a ****load of strings, bells, and tambourines. So there you go. I did it this way because the games' actual winterized versions are boring.
Also, this was compressed to start with and then got horribly butchered when uploaded, so it doesn't sound nearly as clear as the full versions.

Animal Crossing Remade Music Demo 02

I already have an AC music demo up there, but this one has a few different songs than the other one and almost all of them are now updated with instruments that are a million times better than the old ones. So whichever songs on this one that are the same should be improved anyway.
Again, it's a collection of some songs from the list of Animal Crossing songs I've remade in FL Studio, from scratch, using all sorts of soundfonts.
Same deal as the winter one-- this one's horribly compressed.

Invitation of a Crazed Moon (unfinished)
The opening area music from Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. It's a cool song, but it's hard as **** to recreate by ear because there's so much going on at once in the song. Listen closely to the organs in the background throughout the song-- those were really fun to do, but hard.

PaperMon Battle
Compresserized by the Internet.
Yeah, I tried to make the wild Pokemon battle theme (RBY) into Paper Mario-styled music, and it didn't quite come out that way.
Oh well.

Ground Man's Theme (Unfinished)
From MegaMan and Bass, Ground Man's theme. It's not finished, and I dunno if I should finish it. I just put it up here because... I dunno.

Pokemon GSC Medley (Way Unfinished)

Completely unfinished medley I started for Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal. These three songs just slam together-- they don't have any transitions yet.

Untitled 107
Another untitled song. Dunno, I think it was supposed to suggest either a dense forest or winding labyrinth of some kind.

Punch-Out!! Jazz Remix (Unfinished)
Unfinished jazz remake of the Punch-Out!! fight music. Goddamn, there are no good VSTis or soundfonts for jazz. Especially brass.

ZUCast News Intro
This is the music intro/loop used for the Zelda news section of this site's podcast (at least, I assume-- I haven't listened to it). I figure they wouldn't mind if I put this here.

vvv NEW vvv

Jack's Theme
I've got a theme song for Jack. I didn't put it in the Halloween contest, of course, because that probably wouldn't have been allowed and they're two different formats, but eh. Gaaarbled compression, sorry. I'm running out of space on this drop.

Well, that's all for now.
Give me some criticism (please?)!

Wow, your character designs sure are something! They're unique and flexible and I think they look great!

Btw, I love the Ozzy Osborne reference there.

Heh, thanks.
I think I'm gonna scare people away with that enormous first post, though...
I'm way too wordy.

Dude. The cowboy looks like Duster from Mother 3.

You have a very fun, playful style.

Duster? I think you mean Flint, since Flint's, like, actually a cowboy. Yeah, I guess he kinda does, although that's unintentional.
And thanks!

The art could be improved though it certainly isn't horrible.

The concepts, however, are good.

Why, thank you. Yeah, I'm in an animation program in college right now, so we'll see where that goes.

Thanks! Yeah, the drawings leave a lot to be desired (although as I said, they're doodles-- not that I'm trying to give them a free pass or anything, but I can do better). This is usually what happens almost every time I'm at school-- I have tons of notebooks full of these-- cover-to-cover doodles. It makes it really fun to look back on later on, when I've forgotten some of what was in there.

I have no artistic skill whatsoever, but the doodles seem quirky and full of character to me. I like them.

The Littleroot theme is absolutely spot on, I was really surprised by how good it sounds! T&T's cross-examination allegro is spectacular - again, spot-on. Great job on those two in particular. :>

****ING YES, THIS THREAD IS WIN+.

Right, there's this thing that happens when I listen to good videogame music. If it's especially good, I'll start laughing because it's so crazy good, and I did this with 103. Oh man, and the drawings have nice personality too.

Seriously man, 11/10. If I weren't a member of ZU, I'd bookmark this page.

But speaking of criticism... please give me some. It doesn't help anyone to hear "these suck" or "these are awesome". Don't hold back because they're doodles, either-- just don't tell me that there's no shading or whatever, because I know that.
These suck awesomely.

Re: Tonchiki's World of Doodletude and Artaphernalia

that is slightly shameful bro

your art style reminds me of early one piece mixed with some comic book made by a junkie author

so it's above adequate

I always loved making comics. Ironically, even though it's what I started doing when I was seven, it's my weakest area right now (when compared to animation), so I need to work on it a lot more. But I do have comic series planned.

Huh, is that so.
