My ArtsyFartsy Thread

uhhh yeah, been drawing for a few days now. By that I mean nonstop, no games or nuthin (shocker!). So here is some of it. Note the pics are taken with my phone so the quality will be awful. I write notes or random things so I know what I have drawn or because I can. Usually the latter

my current WIP:



heavily considering re-doing the entire back leg, I only like the fold on the shin, and even that is screwed on the bottom verticle line >.> If I do I will make him more balanced, instead of magicaly floating. I also wanna leave him headless, too much pressure >.>

C&C please :3

No!!! I love the abstractness of the leg, and for the fold in the shin I would just do a light shadow that wraps around to the one in the back! I love it! Especially the shoelaces. And it doesn't look like his foots floating, just like he's lifting it up to do some cool move like a wide turn or moonwalk.

I didn't mean the foot his whole balance is off, he is leaning forward on nothingness

so I finished it aside from laces on the far leg and a few bits here and there. Gonna shade it next, possibly add a background. I still dislike the back leg. It's just soo... awkward. At least it doesn't mess up his entire composure this time though. And the left arm. It isn't twice the size of his other arm. It's just the lighting. Shading will fix that intentional design. I hope.

oh and I fixed the problems I was having with his shirt. Now his far shoulder isn't massive and both arms are relative to the chest. Sort of.

Oh I see, its because his foots at an odd angle, especially for how far to his right he's holding his guitar. Its like he's doing guitarist yoga.

I was proud of it. For 10 whole minutes. Has any artist ever achieved that? above the age of 5 I mean?

anyhow: Eyes uneven, Head is too vertically long, mouth needs to be flipped horizontally and the clothes.

Well, I'm not really professional at art. ZU has plenty of artists and they do know how to give you useful critics - I don't.

Still, I do think it's pretty impressive that you say you've been drawing for a few days - I'm certain I could never achieve such improvement in such a short amount of time. So kudos for that.
What Should I Call Him guy looks a little off to me - something around the neck, I believe, but I'm sure the experts can tell what exactly it might be. And again, it might be just me.
I love how detailed the jeans and the shoes are on the Guitar Guy, it looks quite realistic -- the hair is also awesome, though it's slightly anime-ish to me. Which is no prob, I'm just stating. :]

But really, I'm no good artist. So I'm only posting, because you want my opinion so much. x3

AURRIE GUNNA MAKE FEW POINTERS :D

You do have the artsy style to draw, I'll say that, but I think realism would work better for you than drawing animé/manga characters. (don't ask me how, I just think you would.) You have a style how to draw and thats good. But their is things you need to learn before drawing offical/professional drawings:

(Don't take them so seriously, just trying to help ya)
You need to learn how to draw your anatomy a bit better. The arms of the guy playing the guitar are different. (misshapen of course) If I were you look up reference when you draw people in that stance so you know how the body/style looks like, or get a take a picture of yourself doing that stance.

I also you can work a little bit more in the face/neck. The face looks good but rough. The hair style I'm not going into, everyone has their own style.

I do admit you can to the folding and ruffles you did are good, I envy you for that.

Genshai - at least you're not shy to show your drawings on a public site. <3


It's great that you're able to see your mistakes and accept them. Most beginning artists don't have this attitude and take every criticism as some sort of personal insult.

I have to agree with Aurelia that you should perhaps focus more of your drawing time copying still-life just to get the hang of basic shading, perspective etc... But at the same time, I know how fun it is making up your own ideas or doing fanarts.

One thing you're able to express already is your use of strong bold lines.


If you keep at it, and dedicate your time to just draw as much as you can, you will definitely succeed. <3

thanks. I think I like Anime in the sense it is... easier to copy? there are more defined rules than well.. Evolution.

Okay, Keith. I have been following your art thread for quite a while now, and a single question pops into my mind whenever you pop in another piece:

Do you have GIMP? The lighting in these pictures are absolutely deplorable. I love your drawings, I really do; but the lighting makes it hard to discern details I want to critique so that you can improve. :3

I do have The GIMP, would you mind telling me how to fix it? I plan on using my scanner some time, but if there is a way to fix these then tell me :3

Oh, wonderful! You already have it downloaded! :>

Well, first you want to go to the "Color" tab on the top toolbar. Then, you go to "Levels" on the submenu. Click "Auto Levels" on the window that appears and BAM!

Try it out. :3

personally I could take it or leave it. The "auto" kinda screwed it up IMO(the last pic) though it may have just been the picture I used. Either way the first two are the only ones I would consider using. Might try to scan it sometime next week anyhow.

Sorry to bump in here, but I do have something to share regarding GIMP and editing your pics Gen. <3



Sometimes hitting "Auto Levels" can make the overall result much worse, especially if there is a large difference in both lighting and shadows. It works better if all of the values are near the same level.

I use the "Curves" tool which is found under the "Colors" tab. You have much more control adjusting the lighting and shadows by a long shot, or even just a tiny bit that can make a huge difference.

"Levels" also does the same thing, but I find that you have more control with curves.

Oh! And I forgot to add that my favourite would have to be the middle one of the three you posted above. It's very balanced compared to the other two.

thanks, I did actually use both levels and curves on the middle one, which was kinda redundant but I wanted to get a feel for them. I liked how in curves I could specifically make the dark bits dark and leave everything else alone, unfortunately I shaded the shoes to be really dark aswel, so it didn't work too well >.>
