I don't know on how low resolutions you work with, but you should definately move for bigger! Your artwork is great, it'd be shame if you can't print them out some day due to too small resolution. I especially dig your Sherlocks, the expressions are so good.

Re: eeks' Stuff (Part 2)

I'll try to do so with my next portrait. I think I've gone a bit too far to start over with the current one! Though perhaps I could resize it, due to the style I can probably smooth out all the colours at a higher resolution. Grown kinda attached to the style I've painted in though.

Getting there. Using the most awful reference photo ever. I think the colours might be a bit too bleak, and that it needs some warmth to it. Maybe in the background?

Edit:

I changed the background to be bold and warm, I think it looks better now. Will do more to the background, but I have to go to work. T_T

Re: eeks' Stuff (Part 2)

All done!

The difference between this and my last steps is kind of hilarious, don't know how I convinced myself it looked anything like him initially. I may edit it some more though, 'cause Hader has an angular face, and I don't think I caught that as best as I could. Still happy either way.

Obviously, didn't go for the orange. >_>

I think I'm just going to spend the year whipping up portraits of real life people, haha.

All finished, though I might play around with it a wee bit. I'm going to start on Alexander Skarsgård or Joseph Gordon-Levitt next... I'm not sure whom. >_>

Re: eeks' Stuff (Part 2)

Really like your latest. The warm and cool colors in the background and the gestural quality of the suit compared to the finer details of the face add some nice tension in there. Really, really nice.

Re: eeks' Stuff (Part 2)

Thanks! I decided to be a bit more experimental with colours this year, the background was initially a blue/grey/green gradient but I went crazy with the curve tool. I think it could do with a bit more definition, to be honest... But I'm always like this.

I've been doing digital art for ten years now, I think? Slow improvements, to be honest. Probably due to how scattered I am when it comes to completing artwork.

Here's a link to my first works. So embarrassing, but I shan't be taking it down any time soon. I don't understand why some artists out there delete their old work.

I'm hearin' ya. Started on a portrait of him from Brick, for my little sister.

Not sure what colours I'll use, I'll figure something out! At about half-size, I think the forum scales images?

Second this....

I mean your illustrations are just amazing. If you did them in a high ppi you could easily sell prints and merch on a site like redbubble (which happens to be really easy to use and just awesome in general).

Re: eeks' Stuff (Part 2)

Well, I finished the sketch, though the right side of his head needs tweaking. Spending any more time on it would just be a waste I think, granted I'll be painting over it.

Since it's just a sketch, I'll resize it to twice the original size as per your suggestion that I do these at a higher resolution. Thanks!

My interface and desk are super cramped, I think that has something to do with how small I paint things.

Re: eeks' Stuff (Part 2)

Its looking really great

And yeah try and do a size that is suitable for printing at legal size at least. If you do it at that size, enlarging it for printing at bigger sizes won't cause much distortion.

Would you say this was large enough?

Would be less of a pain once I get around to proper details.

Re: eeks' Stuff (Part 2)

Legal size is actually more close to 2400x3200 (not exactly that but in that area).

If that's too big though you should just work with what you're doing now and then just work your way up for something if you want to make it available for print.

Re: eeks' Stuff (Part 2)

Ah, I see. I think the only way I can (personally) get around that is to have another monitor linked in to my laptop to display references. My work space (the monitor and my actual desk) is very small, so I think that's why I feel so uncomfortable. I'll give it a go next piece though, gradually work my way up in size.

Thanks for the pointers!

EDIT: Actually, since it's so ill-defined at this stage, I think I can resize it again. Not at the size you mentioned, but I got it close at around 2100 x 2900.

(at 50%) Definitely improvising now.

Re: eeks' Stuff (Part 2)

Looks awesome I would love to see the process you go through when making these illustrations outlined.

It'll definitely benefit you later on that you're starting to make your illustrations larger now.

PS I think your Bill Hader totally looks like him, you got the likeness better than you think lol. At first I thought it was Michael C Hall cause I forgot Bill Hader exists.

All this looks amazing!
I especially love and envy how you're able to work with such great contrasting shades and lightning.

I can't wait until I can see more of this!

Re: eeks' Stuff (Part 2)

@jellotime:
Haha! I was actually freaking out during the painting process, 'cause I thought he looked too much like Michael C. Hall. He honestly does look like the love child of Michael C. Hall and Rainn Wilson.

I am so sorry for that mental image.

@Phindus:
Oh, thank you! That's the reason I've been doing a lot of real life portraits recently, the lighting and contrast in my stuff was pretty nonexistent before I started. Dx

Anyway, I finished the JGL image.

My sister had better bake me a god damn cake for this, or something.
