Thanks Sophie!
I would never throw this one out. But how I lost it in the first place is beyond me.

Other than that, it looks very nice, EL. :] |
Yeah I figured.

Epic hairstyling or what. XD
Thanks Ranny.

That is true. I do notice that something looks odd between the angling of his legs to his torso + the angle of the sword as well.

I agree with Palomino too, but I think maybe Link's forehead needs to be extended a little to meet the hair, rather than the hairline lowered to meet the forehead.
geez, the tunic... I love it! <3

I agree. I went overboard with his hair a lot (as it tends to be a bad habit).
And thanks! <3

aaaaaaaand...I have some food for thought on the fairy. personally, it bothers me to see fairies/balls of light drawn on white paper, because you have to shade in immediately around the ball of light. ...that throws off the shading of the whole picture though. Link's cheek and arm are now the same brightness as the bright light shining from the fairy, as is the background. I know this is a common way to draw them, but I've never cared for it. I like to draw them on toned paper so that I can add in a brilliant white value, whiter than the rest of the piece.
|
That is true. This drawing would work well if it was drawn in pastels on skin-coloured paper so that Navi and the lighting could stand out more. But I never planned for it since I was only expecting it to be some kind of sketch and nothing more.

the fairy also looks two-dimensional, and it's an odd juxtaposition next to Link. I don't think there's a whole lot you can do, but I'd make Link's fingertips much lighter, or disappear completely into the light. you did this a lil bit with the thumb, but I think it could use more. (EDIT: and maybe add rays coming out around the hand, like you'd see when sun shines through trees and clouds.)
and...I've been trying to figure out about other light sources, but I hadn't been able to peg 'em. the placement of shadows seems a little weird. I like the play of light in spite of that, but it's just a matter of how realistic you wanna go.

A great tip! I'll remember this towards future black and white sketches/graphite artworks. Thank you. <3

I'm glad you love it that much though! Your critique was also extremely helpful. Thanks for your time Shaelyn!

The level on intricacy is incredible!
The shading, obviously with the clothes in particular, is phenomenal. |
Your comments tend to make me speechless SuperDecimal! But I love them all and thank you!

And this was a quick sketch? How long?
|
I would roughly say around... half an hour to do this? It was less than an hour and more than 15 minutes to draw up from what I can remember.

I'm really glad you posted this.
The clothes and folds look dynamic, fluid and natural, the musculature is nicely defined, the hair is lush and flowing, and his face is wonderful. Nice, angular and masculine! Seriously refreshing with all this constant, increasingly more feminine Link Nintendo's kicking out.
And Navi is luv. <3 |
Wow! Thanks again! <3 I guess you could call this practice towards a massive project that I am about to undertake.

The Link drawing is superb. Just-- wow. Yeah. The only critique I can offer is that yeah- his hairline is a tad too high for where his forehead is placed. But that is easily forgotten when I notice the subtle crosshatching and I can just stare and stare and admire some more. (what I mean is -I loooove the crosshatching) |
Thank you Calliope!
I have never heard of that expression of "painting" with a pencil before!
And I will keep an eye out for hair lines.

I did get carried away with it on this piece.
And I do adore crosshatching as well. They seem to create a more dynamic effect than smooth and regular shading at times.

So your pencilwork is crazy clean. Are you spraying fixative on your stuff when you're down to avoid smears, or are you cleaning it all up in Photoshop/etc? Your graphite work is continuously clean and professional.
|
When I draw artworks up with graphite pencil, I take extra care with the movement of my hand on the paper and where to start first to put an end to smudging on my works.
The technique is very simple: I use a clean piece of folded paper under my working hand as the natural oils secreted from your hand does tend to smudge and ruin your graphite piece altogether. Also, where you start and finish does play a large role in the smudging problems in your piece. If you're right-handed like me, start on the top-left corner of the artwork and finish to the bottom right corner to limit the amount of smudging. That way your hand doesn't go over dark graphite areas that have already been done.
I also use fixatives on
all my artworks - regardless if they are graphite works, watercolour works, coloured pencil, acrylic painted etc... Not using fixatives will allow the marks you've drawn on your piece to smudge easily if you accidentally spread your hand or fingers on it - plus pigmentation will slowly go away as the years go by if you don't "fix" your artworks.
I barely clean up my graphite artworks on photoshop. I tend to avoid it so that the image looks as natural as possible. It's only if spots or weird marks appear that I do clean the artwork a bit.

If this is the kind of stuff hiding under your bed- I'd be perfectly fine with some more 'under the bed discoveries!' :>
|
I'll have to explore it at some point. xD Heaps of paper is resting under it.

Oh its just some blue rub away eraser. Its nothing fancy at all but it does the job better than a lot of erasers ive had.

Ahhh... The good ol' Kneaded eraser

It's the only eraser I ever use in all my artworks.
Wow I hope I gave everyone a decent answer or comment back to their post! Thank you for all your wonderful comments everyone!
