The Artyworks of the Gold kind!

I tried to make a witty title like the rest of you but I failed. Shoosh. ;-;

So its been ages since I had my last art thread, so I can't be bothered to update my older one. So you get another thread! (I really need to keep my threads regulary don't I?) This time we have not just computer drawn art, and my pictures aren't in the style they used to be! o:

First off, lets start with some photography!

Link the dog (Linked because of the size)

Yes, yes I named my dog Link, and no I have no idea what I was thinking when I did name him. This picture is for my last assignment for Photography. I am very happy with this picture because it takes so bloody long to get him to sit still, and this is one of the few times he did! I also edited the picture a bit making it a wee darker, and had to crop the picture on both sides. Compare!

Next is one of Notsil's character, Oscar!

Oscar is from a Role Playing site called Open Blue. You should check it out if you're interested in all that. Anyhow, I don't know much about this character, not even his name name, but I like what I know about him. He claims to be the King of Bandits, and he is the son of the King of Pirates, whos a meanie face. :<

Speaking of characters, I have some of my own. First up, Leaf, who has shown up three times before now:

I was going to draw her with Cobalt, another one of Notsil's characters but I got lazy, and then our crazy idea of reviving our Pokemon characters failed, so I was like meh. Leafy has changed in terms of clothes again, but this time I just made them more simpler. Nothing much to say about her, but this is the first time I started to really use the new eye style, because I got sick of the "anime" eyes I was using.

Speaking of new styles:

This is Micha Rowan, my character from Open Blue. I had a big picture all planned for her and everything but then the program crasheded halfway through, so I was stuck with a half picture. Annoyed because I wanted to finish my character profile with the picture, and I needed to draw other people, I can up with an idea of drawing a "mini picture". Basically its the same as my normal ones, just less proportional and a bit more simpler. The good thing is that you see all the details in this style, and its much quicker to draw. In fact I'm rather fond of this odd, skinny limbed short people approach. So much I use it in my next lot of pictures.

Blackthorn and Alder (Another biggish one)

Blackthorn and Alder, brother and sister of a magical family. Alder is a Dark Mage, while Blackthorn is a simple swordswoman (called: Myrmidon in the Fire Emblem games). For some reason Blackthorn has no ability to cast magic but she is loopy enough to fit into the rest of the family, yay! These two characters are for this wonderful little thing: http://www.zeldauniverse.net/forums/...-of-souls.html (It is very awesome, go and check it out)

Blackthorn is the first person to show up, as she is the only class avaliable out of the two so far. Though in some chapters to come Alder will eventually show up.

But oh look, one is actually handrawn! Yes, my friend scanned them for me. They're not the best pictures (Tonchiki pointed out some mistakes to me. I didn't even notice until he did D: ), but I'm fond of them and I was very happy to actually show off some of my handrawn pictures.

So this is all for now. Even though I don't really draw seriously, I would love tips, and critique if someone finds a little odd mistake that I've done. Any improvement is good, as even great artists (Like Eternal Legend ;D) improve every single day! Also thank you for viewing my thread. :3

I told you all about the photo already. So I'll only shortly say again that it's a really nice shot.

I really like this picture. Good job on everything. Only the shoes could use some detail. I like his hair. His chin is very slightly missplaced though, but not as much that it would stand out too much.

I usually think simple designs work better, so I like the new design. But I don't like the new colour scheme much, it's too muddy in my opinion (not too muddy in general, but too muddy for leaf). Oh and I think the shoes could use some detail, same with "Oscar".
I'm glad you changed the eyes to a more realistic size compared to your former style.
There's also one thing that bothers me about her face, her chin is in an odd place, it should be directly under her nose, but it isn't. It needs to move to the right.
Lastly I still think she has an unhealth resemblance to L :p

I'll probably comment on the rest later.

Re: The Artyworks of the Gold kind!

I forgot to post in this thread because I was sick and I put my health before this thread like a selfish twat. Now I shall post in it so that Gold will stop throwing koalas at me.

Okay, let's get started, my kangaroo-riding artist!

Badum-tish.

In all seriousness, that's a great shot. Linky is adorable.

Reminds me of that pic you did of me.

What program are you using for this? This is far too good to be MS Paint, even by your standards.

That hoopla aside, this is a really nice piece

Leaf certainly has come a long way since you first showed her to me. Very nice.

The other two are nice as well, although the hands seem a bit... off. I don't know how to explain; they just look off. It's minor, but it's something.

Overall, though, they're good, and you have improved. Keep it up, and please stop throwing koalas at me now.

Holly needs to put here something she hasn't showed me yet so I can actually give her comments in this thread I haven't already told her. =(

Thank you for the critique.

Yes, the chin problem, after you showed me what to do I've been practicing to make sure I do it properly from now on. Also with the boots, I just don't like putting much detail into them anymore. Mainly because I used to put too much detail into them and then everyone would focus on the boots more then the actual person. Baaadd idea. But I'll put more detail into them next time.

Haha, a muddy Leaf. What colours should I use to make it unmuddy?

Thank you! Making them all cartoony is what I'm trying to do, so its nice to hear that they are. :3

Yeah I do have a habit of using ideas from older characters to make my new ones.

I draw the picture on Paint, but then I move it to Open Canvas to outline and colour in the pictures.

Thank you. :3

Yes Leaf has grown up with my drawings. Isn't it sweet? :')

The hands are like that because I'm lazy, very very lazy. I will put more effort into them next time though.

Thank you. :3

Re: The Artyworks of the Gold kind!

So like I said I got some pictures from my camera. I went hunting for batteries for a while until I found two eventually. Yay! Both of these pictures are going to be drawn over on the computer and coloured in eventually.

This girl is May another one of my characters. Shes one of those grumpy characters who come off as a jerk to strangers, even though shes generally a nice person. Shes also overdramatic and sarcastic, making her fine to write as.

I like this picture, its much better without all the darkness and stuffs. The only problem the belt looks a bit medieval for someone whos in a fairly modern setting. I'll just say shes not a good dresser either.

This is based on the movie Up. Its just a sketch so its not fantastic yet, and I need to finish the house and stuffs, but so far its good. It'll just look ten times better coloured in as parts will make more sense (the ground looks like the sky at this moment. xD)

I'll try to get more up at a later date, possibly ones that aren't sketched and actually coloured in. Maybe.

Sounds like my kind of character.

Yeah, to be perfectly honest, I thought she was a guy.
It's probably mostly due to how she's dressed. In anime, long hair doesn't always mean "female", so that's a bit tricky. Sometimes the androgyny can be annoying. I do love the style of the clothes though! Just... not on a girl. =p Doesn't seem to fit.

It's also a bit difficult to judge her age. Her face makes her look like a mature character, one that could be anywhere from 19 to her mid-20s. But since her body is so short, it's really hard to tell.
I think if you're going for a cartoonier style and less realistically-proportioned, either increase the leg lengths or shorten the torso. In this case it's not so good to have the legs and torso about the same length, because then you're not really sure what to make of it-- it kinda looks just disproportioned anime or something. It's vague and hard to make sense of.
(I'm not even sure if I'm making sense anymore.)

Wait wait, there's ground in that? XD
I actually think it'd look more effective if the background were totally sky. Maybe that's just me. Also, using my limited graphic design knowledge, it's generally not a good idea to have something smack-dab in the middle of the page, so it might be good for the house to be shifted to the left or right a bit. Also, I think it needs some perspective.

I hope you don't mind, but I used the pic for an example:

Do you see how the way you have it is kinda flat? When I first saw the picture, I kinda expected it to be going at this angle (although that's also because I thought the whole background was sky). In any case, I think it'd look a bit better if you didn't have it just be a complete profile, but gave it some perspective so it doesn't look flat.

Well, this is just what I came up with offhand.
But keep it up!
