a Magi-Nation fic

Magi-Nation, for those of you who don't know, was a popular Gameboy Color game way back when that was also a card game. However its popularity has died down a lot, and so a lot less people have heard of it.

The thing I enjoyed the most was the fiction. In fact I enjoyed it so much that I decided to write in my own bits of the storyline to add flavor to the story.

Here's my story:

Weaving So Soon
Spirit of Naroom, Part 1
By Alex Plant

Wence prodded the large Weave stalk with his staff and the blades of grass parted, allowing him to pass through to the riverbank. After all the walking he’d been doing, he could use a good drink. He dipped his canteen in the cool clear water, allowing it to fill before sipping quietly from his container. Something was different about Weave water, something he’d never been able to put his finger on. In a way the water seemed…alive like the rest of the Weave.

He took another sip, feeling rejuvenated already. Maybe it was just him. Maybe it was just because he’d been so well-traveled or that he was just too thirsty to think straight. Maybe he was imagining things. In any case, he needed a good rest before continuing back to Naroom. After the events of the past few months, it was high time that he went back there to help out with the reconstruction of Vash Naroom and assist in protecting his region from another attack.

The decision to return home became final when he heard that his best friend, Sperri, had become corrupted by the Dark Twins. He had known Sperri for the longest time, since both of them were small children, and he didn’t want to lose her to darkness. So many had already been taken by the shadows; he couldn’t bear to lose another.

After walking for nearly three days without rest from the Underneath, he had finally stopped to rest on this cozy riverbank under the cool air and the crisp sunshine. Autumn was fast approaching, and as the forest weakened, he knew it would become more difficult to save Sperri. What he wouldn’t give to be back at Vash Naroom right now. But no matter how badly he wanted to press on, he needed to rest sometime.

Everybody needed to rest sometime.

He closed his eyes and went into deep thought. What had driven him to become an adventurer, when so many others did not? It seemed that hardly anyone voyaged like they used to. Nowadays everyone was so nationalistic that they failed to observe the mysteries and wonderment behind any of the other regions. Was it because they were afraid? It could be understood, especially in light of recent events. The Core and the Shadow magi had been ceaselessly assaulting civilizations across the Moonlands, and now everyone was paranoid that all the other regions were out to get them.

Ever since the Dark Twins had attacked Naroom, everywhere he went he was regarded with suspicion. No one trusted the Naroomese anymore. They all felt that everyone from Naroom had been corrupted by the Dark Twins, and that if they were allowed into the region they would spread the darkness. Of course, Wence understood their suspicions, but he had been away from Naroom since long before the Dark Twins had taken hold, and, thus, was not victim to their evil. However, many of his friends were not so lucky.

Evu had been the first to be taken by darkness. After the Shadow Geyser erupted in Naroom, he was seduced by Warrada and turned against them. Wence had suspected the treachery, but he was summoned to the Underneath after a second geyser wreaked havoc on Ombor. One of his close friends from the underground had perished in the brutal attack, but Ogar, who had been missing, presumed dead, had reappeared. It turned out that she, too, had been corrupted by Agram and turned against them. However, Ulk and Grej, two more of his friends, had managed to restore her good heart. After helping to rebuild Ombor, Wence moved on to Cald, where yet another geyser had surfaced.

At Cald, he learned that Barak and Tryn, who had vanished sometime during the Naroom Shadow Geyser escapade, had escaped the darkness of the Core. He met Tony Jones, and assisted the upstart Magi in infiltrating the infernal geyser and liberating Korremar’s mind. The d’Reshi spy had fallen victim to his own mind control magic, and the shadows were beginning to take him. Afterwards, Tony and Wence were separated during an attack by Morag, who captured young Valkan and took Tony to the dreaded Shadow Hold.

When Wence learned that a fourth Shadow Geyser had emerged in Orothe, he hurried to Oscent Mar, to find Tony Jones waiting for him. After several brutal attacks by the Shadow magi named Qwade, Wence managed to buy Tony a chance to sneak into the vortex of destruction. Tony had to face off against Warrada, who safeguarded the Core Stone in the center of the geyser. After a spectacular battle, Tony was shocked to discover Warrada’s twin brother, Hrada, had assembled all of the Shadow magi. They chased after Tony, but the four regions which Tony had saved fended them off with their strongest warriors.

Tony managed to escape, and Wence went off on his own again.

After many long months, the Battle of Naroom took place, changing the landscape of the region in which Wence was born forever. Its people were scarred with the pain of loss, and Yaki had chosen the way of the Corestalker. Wence had yet to see the horrific transformation his best friend had gone through. He had tried to get back to Naroom since the Battle, but travel between regions became difficult.

Then Sperri Turned.

He became all the more determined to return to his home after hearing this most distressing news. He couldn’t bear the thought of his sweetheart under the control of darkness.

He could be her only hope.
