The Fiery Fortune

What's this!? Another worthless attempt at a short story by Mirren with his Shinjidai Zelda series!?

Yep, you betcha. This one'll be fun though, very fun. Luck of the Draw will be continued after I finish this, I'd just like to work more on this one during my Easter break now, and do Luck of the Draw after it.

All characters are explained enough so that you can visualize them in your head, and you'll get to see more of their personalities as the story goes on.

Here's the prologue!!

The Fiery Fortune
By Mirren

Prologue- The Spark of Adventure; To Find the Lost Treasure

“Stupid books!” About half a dozen tomes were thrown recklessly onto another table as the lad Mirren shuffled through an entire shelf. The codexes and manuscripts he just hurled away were some dozens of years old, possibly ready to break apart at several spots, but that of course made no difference to him, as nothing that wouldn’t help him in a time of aggravation ever would.

As he stood inside the mansion archives, the night grew on outside, the sky turning even more of a gorgeous navy blue and black color, like the tone seen on a brilliant black panther. It was late, very late at that, and the hour of the night was one reason why the boy was inside the library as he searched through endless books. As of late, the lad could not sleep, and even tonight he had spent a good two hours tossing and turning in bed, failing at any attempt to slumber.

Willing to try any plan that seemed possible, the boy decided to try and find something to read, which for most people as they said calmed them down and made them sleepier. Problem for him was, he had read all the books in his room at least twice, and in order for him to actually stay focus enough on a reading to get so enthralled in it to conk out, he’d need to be reading something interesting, and new at that. Knowing the mansion library had one of the largest supply of books, Mirren figured it was the best place to look for something.

Of course, he didn’t expect that he wouldn’t actually be able to find something he’d want to read…

“Gaah! This sucks!!” the boy exclaimed, trying to keep his voice down as best as he could not to awake everyone else in the mansion. He slammed his hands onto the shelves, shaking the entire huge piece of furniture, all the while gritting his teeth as the boy grew more goaded. “With all these dang books you’d think you could find something cool to read in a minute, but nooooooo! The library has to be difficult and make everything hard for me! I swear I’m gonna spend more time in here trying to find something than actually sleeping tonight!!” Again pounding the shelf, it all shook, and several tomes fell off their places and crashed on the ground. Ignoring even while two or three twenty-pound books came about an inch or two from falling on his head, Mirren simply seethed, until soon spotting a lone paperback against the wall of the shelf. His eyes glinted with curiosity. “Hm, must’ve been hidden by all the other books. Wonder what it’s about…” Reaching out, he took the smaller-sized book by the hand, and brought it closer to the lamp he had with him as he examined it. “The Guide to the Fiery Treasure” it was titled. Intrigued, Mirren opened it up, and after blowing off a thin layer of dust, began to read the first paragraph on the first page.

“This book is the sole volume that contains all the information on the way to and about the legendary treasure stored beneath the rock in the Cavern of Blazes. Long ago did a vassal have a mighty sum of money he wished to keep safe during a revolution, and to protect it from any form of bandits and warriors, he had it hidden within a deep sanctuary in one of the rocky hills in Terlon Forest. When he passed on, it was completely forgotten about except by few, and those who knew of it attempted to try and delve into the cavern to retrieve it, but never came out alive. As I, the last of this generation to understand the tale, I have written his book to explain how to find it, for whoever may be lucky enough to discover this tome. It is a treasure worth more than imagination, in estimate from increasing value of money over the next years, it should be worth…” Mirren then stopped, and for a moment his eyes almost bulged out from his sockets, as he gazed in disbelief at what he read.

“Holy crap!!!”

Re: The Fiery Fortune

It's pretty cool! Though I must ask: Just what is your 'Shinjidai Zelda' series? Does it feature the Zelda characters, but from another character's P.O.V?

Re: The Fiery Fortune

Heh, ready for another long read?

Shinjidai Zelda was a Zelda series that I started that was branched off from my Link's Little Brother series. I ended up making a new Link, Zelda and Mirren, but all descendants from my original series. I brough in new characters then too, and what I ended up doing was going from a completely Zelda series, to an anime-like one. I was inspired greatly by the anime Rurouni Kenshin, which I love, and that's why much of it doesn't have the characters fighting huge monsters like in regular Zelda, but just larger or unusual animals and human warriors. I also made it further in history, so much that it's like it'd be in the 1800s, a mix of old age technology and new age. I brought in guns, cannons, gattling guns and even flying planes. It was Zelda series combined with common day techonology and anime

Anyways, I still felt I wasn't original enough, since the land was still Hyrule and it was still Link and Zelda, so now I'm continuing and editing the series so it's in a new land and the characters have new names, made by myself. Now it's going to be a complete original series, only by the tiniest bit related to Zelda.

And if you wanted to know, "Shinjidai" is the Japanese phrase for "New Age" or "New Era". Since the series was much like an anime, and it was in a whole new time for the world, I felt it worked

And thanks for reading!

Re: The Fiery Fortune

Yeah maybe I should get back to this...

This is just the first part of chapter 1

Chapter 1- Mirren’s Schemes; the Desire for Wealth

It was one the most beautiful mornings that the land had ever seen. The sky was as clear a freshly cleaned diamond, and the sun shone brightly as it hung in the air. There was a soothing cool breeze blowing by, and birds all over were perched onto branches or some other ledge, chirping about to create wonderful melodies with even with normal tongues. Spring had just begun, and now the land would become as scenic as it ever could be. With green grass being thick in color, flowers burgeoning all over the countryside in an array of different hues, and all the animals that slept during the winter would awaken, and roam across the kingdom.

At the Sharla Mansion, it was no less beautiful than anywhere else. So nice was it outside, that several of the residents decided to stay outside and spend their breakfast time out on the courtyards and patios. Four of these people were the best friends of Mirren; his older cousin Ceerlin, a young man with long blonde hair, clad by dark tan adventuring pants, and a fine green tunic with a white long sleeve shirt underneath it. Sitting across from him was the owner of the mansion, Saldia Sharla, the daughter of the King of the Land. She was truly a beautiful young woman, with long golden-brown hair flowing to her back, and dressed by a rose-colored velvet long sleeve shirt and a light pink sarong. Sitting next to her was another young woman, Alsay. Her hair was a beautiful chestnut, and while only went down a bit past her shoulders, was no less gorgeous than Saldia’s. Covering the lower portion of her neck was a red bandana, and then a white sleeveless shirt upon her upper body. Clothing her shapely legs was a sarong that was made from a jean-like material, and on both sides was a large slit to open it up more. Finally across from her was the other young man, Sona Relado. A martial-artist, and quite a taller man, he had a head of short brown, spiky hair, and then on the rest of his body was a light grey opened coat, and baggy indigo pants.

“Wow, the pancakes are delicious today” Ceerlin said with his eyes lighting up after he inhaled one in one bite. Saldia chuckled slightly.

“Yeah, they are though, I love the strawberry syrup even more though” she commented. Alsay smirked as she reached over and took the bottle of blueberry syrup.

“No way, it’s all about the blueberries” the young woman remarked. At the time, Sona had four pancakes on his plate, all them stacked on top of each other, and smothered by a mess of maple syrup.

“Doesn’t frickin’ matter to me what’s on there…” he said, and after stabbing his fork through the pile of them, wolfed them all down. Saldia’s eyes widened.

“Holy cow! How can do that!?” she exclaimed, amazed by his unorthodox eating. Alsay appeared to be trying to hold in her laughter.

“He’s got a big enough mouth for it…” she muttered to Saldia. Instantly the owner of the mansion burst out laughing alongside Alsay, and as Sona’s eyes bulged with anger Ceerlin simply sat smiling at all his friends. As that all happened, his eyes wandered away from the table, and then spotted Mirren on one of the lawns, wearing his red long sleeve shirt and baggy blue pants. The lad carried a duffle bag over his shoulder, and had a fat pouch of what seemed to be money over his belt. Ceerlin quickly became intrigued.

“Hey Mirren, what are ya doing?” he called out to him. His younger cousin turned away, and with a grin ran over to them at the porch. The others now noticed him too, and were a bit surprised to see him as if he were going out somewhere.

“Where the heck are you doing?” Sona asked, cocking an eyebrow.

“Yeah, don’t you want something to eat at least?” Saldia inquired. The boy shook his head, the same smirk on his face.

“Nah I’m fine. I’m just heading to Tokoio Town right now, I gotta go buy a few supplies to talk to a few people” he said, trying to make his speaking sound interesting to get his friends curious. Amazingly, it worked.

“And what would that be for?” Alsay asked, though thinking to herself that he was ‘full of it’. Once she asked that, Mirren’s eyes lit up, and in a flash he whipped out the book he found last night in the library.

“I was in the archives last night, and I found this awesome book about this treasure that’s buried somewhere in Terlon Forest. It says that such really rich guy hid it there to protect it during the revolution, but he died before he could get it out. Everyone who used to know about it tried to find it, but couldn’t, and the last surviving dude of them wrote this, explaining everything of where to find it and how. I’m gonna go buy a bunch of stuff to go find it, and then I’ll recruit a team to help me search for it. Whata ya think?” he finished off, then grinning as his friends all stared at the small book.

They all erupted in laughter, falling back into their chairs and chortling louder than they ever had as tears formed in their eyes. Mirren’s eyes lit up as he gritted his teeth.

“What’s so funny!!??” he shouted. Ceerlin was the first to mostly stop his laughter, and be able to slightly speak.

“You can’t actually believe that Mirren, it’s a load of bull” the young man explained.

“Yeah, and no one’s gonna be willing to actually help you, because they know it’s fake and you’ll look like an idiot!’ Alsay exclaimed, laughing even more as Saldia joined in with her. Mirren seethed at the two of them, but soon turning around and stomping off towards the exit.

“Ah screw you guys! I’m outta here!” he yelled, muttering more to himself that sounded like several curse words. Sona had now also finished with his laughter, and leaned back in his chair as he seemed to ponder over something.

“Ya know, maybe I should go help him” he said aloud. Saldia looked a bit bemused for a moment.

“Why would you do that?” she asked. Sona grinned as he then sat up fully in his chair and leaned over at the others.

“Because if it is all real, then I’ll have a crap-load of money, and if it’s not, I’ll have the opportunity to make fun of him for life!” he whispered. They all couldn’t help but laugh once more.

* * *

Through the roads of the peaceful Tokoio Town Mirren stomped along, barring his teeth like an angered animal with two eyes narrowed due to his current bitterness. Even while he was a simple boy, not exactly huge in size either, every person in his path stepped out of the way as he neared them, making sure not to irritate the lad any more.

“Laugh at me will they the slimy idiots. I’ll show ‘em, I’ll show ‘em all. I’ll freakin’ find that treasure, pay off whatever I need to for my workers, and then I’ll take the rest and be rich! Hell, if I don’t wanna invest a lot into the bank, I’ll buy out the Mansion!!” Mirren had now stopped in the middle of the road, and while going through his sequence of ‘wishful thinking’ began to talk out loud. Not even noticing the many baffled glances he got from passing-people, Mirren continued to dream and ramble on. “Yeah, then I’ll be Prince Mirren! No wait, I’m not of any royalty like Saldia. I’ll be Duke Mirren! Wait that sounds pretty lame. Baron Mirren! That’s it! I’ll be Baron Mirren! Then I’ll completely give the place a makeover and I’ll make everyone who laughed at me my personal butlers and maids!!”

“Don’t count on making me that, considering I’ll be helping you find the treasure” a familiar voice then said aloud. Mirren’s eyes widened for a moment with surprise, and turned around to meet Sona walking over to him; a grass weed in his teeth, hands in his pockets, and the normal smirk on his face. Mirren eyed his dubiously.

“Why the hell are you here?” the boy asked almost acrimoniously. Sona chuckled by the spiteful question.

“Cause I thought about it, and that treasure really could be somewhere. And man if I you and me managed to find it we’d have money up the wha-zoo!” the man said. Mirren appeared confused.

“Why in God’s name did you say ‘wha-zoo’?” he asked. Sona gave the lad a stony expression.

“I’m trying not to say anything vulgar in public ya lil dope” he muttered to Mirren as he leaned over to him so he could hear.

“Ohhh…” he said then, understanding him finally. For a moment the two of them were silent, and almost without any movement before Mirren threw an arm up into the air. “Then let’s go get all the stuff we need to go find that treasure!” The boy turned around, and began to walk off for a moment before another voice stopped him.

“If ya wanna do that Mirren first ya gotta go get a State Certification” it said. The boy stopped where he stood, and looked over to his side to see an old friend of theirs, the Police Chief of their area Odokai. A thinner man with shorter black hair, and quite thin glasses as well. He wore his navy blue police uniform as usual, whites gloves and all. When he got to them, Mirren slightly raised an eyebrow.

“What do ya mean by that?” he asked. Sona sighed as Odokai couldn’t help but smirk a bit.

“It’s a document or pass that the Province Board gives you to do a project they don’t allow without permission from them. Digging, hunting and fishing are types of stuff like that” the young man explained. Mirren still didn’t seem to quite get it.

“What does the Province Board have to with it?” Sona couldn’t even find the will to sigh as he leaned over towards Mirren and gave him another stony expression.

“You really gotta start reading the newspaper more often…” Odokai now laughed.

“You see Mirren, if you’re going digging for any reason, yours being for a ‘treasure hunt’ you must have the authorization of the local government. Digging in certain areas can upset the environment and wreck it, which the Board is concerned of, as well as damage others, other digging organizations, and even pipelines for water from streams or reservoirs. It can even pollute water systems if it’s done incorrectly. That, and the majority of digging projects utilize bombs or explosives, which you must have a State Certification for using in the first place” the police chief explained. Somehow, Mirren managed to grasp all of what he was saying.

“Okay then…so do I have to go see a politician or something?” the boy inquired.

“No, not at all. Nathon can write you out one at the station. All we have to do is go there” Odokai replied. Mirren’s eyes lit up again, knowing now the task wasn’t hard at all. Odokai began to walk off in the direction to the local Police Headquarters, as the lad and Sona followed alongside him. Going on, Sona glanced down at Mirren.

“You really are a moron ya know that?” he murmured.
