Just to let you know, all you're going to get in this thread are comments on how much this anime ROCKS! I'm pretty sure of it. I mean, who doesn't like Elfen Lied? It's one of the best animes I watched, though it kind of sucked that it was only 12 episodes long.

The ending is pretty sad, too. Being a guy, I feel embarrassed to say I almost cried at that point.

Elfen Lied was the first genuinely disturbing anime I watched, and yet it's macabre in such a way that it engrosses the viewer. The themes in the series are really powerful as well, and I prop the staff behind it for packing a consistent amount of tantalizing material in a 12-episode span. Don't know if I'd call it a masterpiece, but the thought is definitely there.

While it was pretty short, the duration felt just about right to me... To continue the series, or expand on any episode to elongate the length would feel unnatural.

I actually thought it was pretty underwhelming. The concept was good and it had a lot of promise, and the OP is just beautiful. I loved the references to Klimt's work and Lilium is an incredibly beautiful song.

But I ultimately felt that it fell short. If it were a longer series, it probably would have been able to become better than it was; then it could give every issue and theme the attention it needs. And the humans were often either unrealistically mean or unrealistically gullible. Some moments that were supposed to be dramatic just came off ridiculous, such as the scene where the professor reveals that he too is a Diclonious.

The final episode was actually very good, though. And I am very fond of the Diclonious and the Director. Lucy especially. Intelligent, strong and had a lot of issues to work out.

How can you not notice it? The chicks half the time are naked! Even the begining theme ALL the chicks are naked!

This has got to be one of the most beautifully animated animes I have ever seen, and the story is just so sad.

Although, I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed with it. I was expecting it to be this massive blood fest (it was, but still :/ ), when to me, it was more like a violent porn. Maybe I'm just "immune" to violence and gore and guts flying everywhere

Besides, if you look away during the nude parts, you'd be missing out on some good stuff (storyline and action wise, not just ZOMG A NAKED CHICK wise)

wow, you guys are pretty much all right. it is all of those things. although, i do think that elfen lied has a lot of nudity, like zeldace6400 said, you don't really notice it because your too involved in the story, which is what i think zeldace6400 was trying to get at.

Elfen Lied receives so much praise and appreciation. As a matter of fact, more than it should get. The whole plot isn't as amazing as many people say it is. Instead, go read Monster or Berserk.

I hate to go against the grain (actually I lie) but I've seen one episode of this series, and the only reason I would possibly watch more is if my friend, who fanboys over the damn thing, forced me to at gunpoint, and geared me up in one of those things from A Clockwork Orange holding my eyes open and someone dropping water into my eyes to make sure they don't dry up.

In the first five minutes this girl, stark naked apart from a helmet, massacres a small team of elite, heavily armed and heavily armoured soldiers with INVISIBLE BLADED HANDS. It's implied she's been experimented on, it's understandable that she's a bit angry, but there's a stupid amount of blood and gore involved. I seem to remember a part where they fleshed out the life of one of the guards before he was decapitated in a pathetic attempt to make us feel sorry for him, but I'm not so sure about that part specifically. Anyway, she's shot in the head as she escapes, breaking the helmet and revealing her face, and she washes up onto a beach, stark naked.

When she's found, she now has the behaviour of a cat and the mental capacity of a three-year-old now that a large chunk of her brain is missing. And there are a multitude of ways the series' writers could show that someone is now mentally handicapped or infirm as a result of injury. They choose to have her running around with her hands between her legs for some reason, then she sits down on her knees, and proceeds to urinate on the floor. This bothers me for a variety of reasons, not least of which being that it's horribly distasteful to suggest that, because someone now has the demeanour of a child, they can't even use the toilet. If this was the case, I'm sure one of the other characters could've just made a comment about it to let the viewer know. Or even if this was impliedly the case, I'd rather it be the subject of some pervert's fanfiction than actually depicted for our viewing pleasure.

To top it off, this infirm, now handicapped pink-haired girl is seen nude more than once, and the scene in which the man who's tasked himself with looking after her is undressing her, and his friend (who happens to be a jealous girl) walks in at an inappropriate moment, and thinks he's taking advantage of her. In any other context, that could've been funny. Here, it was just horrible.

And the odd "word coming up" slide that they did in Evangelion. "VERNICHTUNG". It wasn't worth crap there, but at least it was actually relevant. It isn't worth crap here either, and has nothing to do with the scene it showed up during, with one of the characters walking through a back-alley in Japanese suburbs. Especially in German.

And towards the end of the episode, even more stupid amounds of gore as it's revealed that, despite missing a large chunk of her brain, this girl now has a fully-intelligent split personality who can make use of the INVISIBLE BLADED HANDS. Then reverts back to being mentally retarded suddenly.

I would watch the full series before making a judgment, but in general if the first episode of a series doesn't interest you, it's unlikely the rest of the series will. The first episode here thoroughly disgusted me, and I've seen a lot of the same stuff in bad 80s anime such as Violence Jack, Urotsukidoji, Running Bean, and a lot of other old-school Manga Entertainment publications. They, however, had the excuse that a lot of such content was a trend at the time in an attempt to have shock value and attract viewers, since anime wasn't as much of a big market in the west at the time. Anime's come a long way since then, and Elfen Lied from my initial impression does a lot of the same crap in an attempt to be deep and meaningful, but succeeds in being just as artistic as the above examples. Read: Not at all.

Edit: I just realised how big this rant was, but given how much I hated that one episode, I'm not sure I'm entirely surprised.

The entire series was overwhelming(nudity and gore aside)....I just wish it was longer.

Berserk is an awesome manga, and the anime was just as good. I was going to bring this up, but since we're talking about Elfen Lied I didn't think it was a good idea to.

By the way, does anyone know if Elfen Lied has a manga? Most animes are based off of one, but I can't seem to find any.

Yes it has a manga but the anime is superior to it.

Needless to say, I'm simply going to agree with Luke Groundwalker here. While the manga was absolutely great, the anime was definitely the underdog of both of them.

Mostly, the manga is practically always superior to the anime. There are, of of course, fewer exceptions.

An awesome series, if it is short. I got the box set of the series for 30 bucks at best buy, pretty good deal I thought. It is a bit violent...did I say a bit? I mean REALLY REALLLLLLLYYYYY violent. But, the gore and nudity is just part of it. A very recommened series for anyone who is old enough to watch it.
