Best looking animes
So I was wondering, what do you guys think are the most visually beautiful animes out there?
Yesterday, I saw Makoto Shinkai's 5 Centimeters Per Second. That film reminded me of how drop-dead gorgeous an anime can be. Seriously, this movie's imagery has a breathtaking level so high that it will leave your lungs and eyes shriveled and dry (The story alone will leave you in a similar state). Here's a preview. After that, I checked out Shinkai's legendary masterpiece OVA: Voices from a Distant Star. Why is it legendary? It's 25 minutes of beauty - planned, drawn, colored, written and animated pretty much single-handedly by Shinkai on his Mac. I am in slack-jawed awe. These were the two best looking animes i've seen since Steamboy and World Record. |

Anything Shinkai is gorgeous.
Other visually beautiful anime would be along the lines of Gankutsuou (the textures and environments, the characters themselves were awesome as well) and Howl's Moving Castle (mostly the scenery, like Howl's secret place or his room in the castle). However, amazing animation plays a part as well, ie not just how the characters and sceneries look, but how they move and interact with the surroundings as well. Anime like Ergo Proxy and Samurai Champloo.

Well I recently saw Afro Samurai at a friends house, and I must say that the animation looks superb. Expected since Gonzo did it. :/

SECONDED!
Also, I am a tad miffed no one has mentioned Moon Sang Kim's 'Sky Blue' (2142 AD) It is a simply stunning movie, it is like a peice of artwork waving around and shooting stuff at you! Granted, the story is hard to follow, but the animation is as slick as a baby oil spillage in the arctic. A MUST for fans of shmexy animation

Pretty hard for me as I'm not much into anime as of late, but here it goes:
1: Anything by Miazaki, most memorable being Spirited Away. Loved the colors and atmosphere of the art. 2: Ghost in the Shell. Lots and lots of detail into the art, and not drawn in the 'generic anime' style. I used this as a prime example to convince my freind Jamie that not all anime look the same. 3: Death Note. The animation is great and the art kinda blurs the line between anime and semi-realism. |

Hard not to hear a mention of FLCL in any 'best anime' list.

^True. FLCL and Ghost In The Shell are a couple of the prettiest animes I've seen, though completely different in styles. Other than those, I think the best looking animes are ones that have that old-school Cowboy Bebop look or the clean animation of something like FMA.
