Anime you would recomend others NOT to watch

Have a bad experience with an anime? Want to save your fellow ZU boarder's souls from that certain anime? Spread the word by spreading the hate!

Air - This anime boasts strong character development, a deep and multi-layered storyline, and solid animation made possible by the legendary Kyoto Animation Studios. Normally, any show with such credentials would have me shouting its praises to anyone..

Not so with Air. This is the most depressing show I've ever seen. The show is absolutely shameless in its endevours to tug at your heartstrings. Absolutely Shameless. Trust me, it gets a lot worse than that.

Dragon Ball Z. Well, a lot of people don't even count this as anime, not sure why, cuz it is. But... season 1 was good I heard. Everything after sucked.

Stay away.

Now, I can understand DBZ, a lot of people don't like it, whatever. But FMA? Seriously? You realize that FMA is amazing right?

FMA was a poorly written anime aimed at children. Nothing about the story or the characters are believable.

I LOVED Air. You'd write off an anime as bad just because it's depressing? The fact that it filled me with so much raw emotion put it on my list of best animes I've ever seen. I absolutely must disagree with you completely.

Another disagreement from me: After you get past the perversion of the first few episodes, you get into the emotional stuff, and watching Chi 'grow up' and learn. It's quite cute, really. I looove it. :3 Putting a bunch of perverted stuff at the beginning is a common downfall of anime. Sure, you'll draw in a bunch of horny teenagers who want to see more pervy stuff, but the fact that people want to actually watch the series and THINK about it goes ignored. Really though, it drops most of the perversion after episode five.

I agreeeee and have made this point in the past. It's very rare for an anime that runs over 26 episodes to draw you in well enough to watch the entire series. Important plot points are spread so thinly that you just lose interest. I wish they would stop forever.

And now for *my* experience:

Gantz sucks. The whole series is far too violent and sexually-driven. As far as I've stood to watch, there was rarely any character development, and the writing was none too spectacular either.

I enojyed the Gantz anime til the last game, that one sucked. And before anyone asks, yes I've read part of the manga. Not all unfortunatly since I actually stopped downloading the scans. But once the manga gets released in the States later this year I'll pick it up again.

As for bad animes, pretty much all of the ones based off of fighting games. Only a handful have been even remotly watchable. Also harem animes are quite literally all the same. If you've seen one you've seen them all.

I've heard very good things about Air, mostly that it's a nice, sweet, slow show that tugs on your heart-strings.

Regardless, if you are going to discount shows due to pointlessly depressing moments, I'd advise you to stay as far away from Neon Genesis Evangelion (or Full Metal Alchemist) as you possibly can.

I've only seen a handful of the first episodes, and those I quite liked.

Then again, I seem to have a 'tin ear', of sorts, when it comes to characters, I can never tell if they're developed or not. (It sounds stupid, but in many way's it's true. I can get emotionally attached to a character with the depth of an unambitious puddle.)

Well, the point of those shows is rather like the point of open-ended shows over here. Overarching plot isn't important, character development is shelved. Instead, the purpose is to keep giving people more of the same, since they obviously like it.

I've never seen it, but my impression was that that was the point of Gantz. And Berserk, for that matter.

I tend to watch anime that's been "filtered", as in, a friend sees it first and recommends it. So I don't have much really to say.

The only series I've seen that I didn't really care for was Fruits Basket, but I know that many people adore it, so I'm just going to assume that it just wasn't my thing, rather than being a bad show.

I'd advise people not to watch Excel Saga. not because it's bad, but because if you're inexperienced with anime, you'll have no clue what's going on at any gven time. it's not for newbies.

Excel Saga isn't bad, it was one of the earlier ones I watched. (Then again, I think the final two EVA episodes make perfect sense, so I might just be odd.)

You might, I suppose, miss some of the genre jokes, but even those ones are pretty obvious.

The only bad thing I can really say bout Excel Saga is not to watch more than two or three episodes in one sitting. Shows like Excel Saga use the same jokes over and over again so if you watch several episodes in a row the humor grows stale very quickly. Another series similar to this is Pani Poni Dash.

NGE is a love/hate thing with me. It's top 5 material. But, I once wrote about it: "If you're feeling suicidal, but don't have the resolve to follow through, watch this and you'll be set." Or something like that.

Air takes that to a whole nother level. I like a good dramatic tear-jerker every once in a while, but Air was just disgusting. It went to over-the-top lengths to stir tears, and while succesful, it just felt too much like a pity-party.

InuYasha.

Basic dialogue.

"INUYASHA!"
"KAGOME!"

Ugh. What manga needs 500 ****ing chapters, seriously.

Naruto. Keep away from it. If anyone comes approaches you wearing any paraphernalia, or holding one of the many products based off of the anime/manga. Run the hell away in the opposite direction.

Most anime based off of shounen series are generally not as enjoyable unless you've read the manga. The animation quality normally isn't that great, and the characters often look a bit skewed. I'm sure there are exceptions to this, but that tends to be the case.
Note that I'm talking about the anime here, and not the manga. I've found myself enjoying a number of shounen manga series, though I admit that that they normally lack the depth that other series outside of the genre possess.

Inuyasha lasts for 150-something episodes and, from what I know, hardly has a plot. Not worth it. I don't know if this is a shounen or not, but it deserves its own warning.
