How many ZUers like anime?

I did give up on that, I admit I'm wrong. I just thought the "e" was supposed to sound closer to an "a". I could care less about the accent, sorry. I said it's closer to a spanish "e". I don't know french so I would have no idea. But as far as my pronounciation goes no japanese person has ever had a problem with it, they usually say its actually pretty good.

I don't know what a Spanish 'E' sounds like, but I'm sure it's not 'ay' or 'ah'. I can't think of any other ways to pronounce the English letter A :s And there's not much point arguing about your actual accent, since I have never heard it and probably never will haha.

Anyway, I found why some people write it like that. Apparently some anime fans like to believe the Japanese took the word anime from a French word, but it's false anyway. I guess it makes people feel better to add the accented e and make it look arty and alternative haha.

yeah I guess I made a mute point. oh well, sorry for the trouble I've caused I'm just an arguementative person, even if I could be wrong. I don't mean anything by it though, to me a debate is just fun.

I've heard that bit you just mentioned though, I never took it seriously though. I thought it was from the English "animation". Then again it makes more sense then people mispronouncing "manga" several different ways which I'm sure you've heard. Ex men ja

I could help but to notice you to arguing over the pronunciation of "e" in Japanese. I have read that is pronounced like the "e" in "bed" or the Canadian thing "eh?" (ay).
The "e" sound is pronounced "ay" or "long a", and I have enough proof from listening to people speak and listening to songs.
My clearest example is in the song Hitomi no Kakera by FictionJunction Yuuka.
When she sings: "anata no mune e kaeritai dake", it is extremely obvious that she pronounces "e" as "ay".

I live in Japan, I speak and hear Japanese every single minute of my life. I go to a Japanese school and take classes with regular Japanese kids and live with a Japanese family. I do not hear え being pronounced as 'Ay' EVER. Take this to the Japanese thread, it's getting ridiculous now. If you don't believe me, ask skate_mate, he's the only person here whose Japanese level I know and would trust more than me.

That said, it IS pronounced like the 'e' in bed, or the word 'Eh' but neither of those sound anything like Ay. Seriously.

ok, I see you're point now. The "e" sound in bed is the first half of the letter "a" if you were to say it out loud, it's just cutting it short. That is it's the sound you get before you draw you're moth backwards to raise the pitch. I'm done here, we should probably get a mod to move all of these posts.

It doesn't matter if there's a correct way to pronounce anime in Japan, anime is also an English word that can be pronounced two ways and be completely right. There's hundreds of borrowed language words in English that are exactly like that.

Err, except we're talking about how it is pronounced in Japanese, not in English. Also, the reason people started attaching a French accented 'e' to anime is because there were people saying that the Japanese language took it from a French word, which is false. It has nothing to do with the French word at all.

And duh, anime in Japanese is a borrowed word from English, I'm quite aware that things can have different pronunciations when they become absorbed into a language.

Anime, yes, manga, not so much. I either need to watch something, or imagine it myself. You can't exactly do either with manga. XD I do like some manga series, though.

i like anime, it's cool, funny, and sometimes bloody.
