The dub awards

I figured with all the negatives we see about English langauge dubs every other week around here it was time to show our appreciation for the better dubs. For it is the responisbilty of the voice directors and voice over artist to translate the anime into english so that the story remains intat and it does not lose the tones, emphasis of the orginal Japanese langauge version. All so you can enjoy your anime without having to read subtitles that occasional obscure the screen. So I'll hand out my awards now and you can use my catergories as a guide or perhaps you can think of your own orginal ones.

Best Improved Dub for a Special Edition
Easily given to Akira. Now lets never speak of the orginal Dub (where on of the kids sounded like marlon brando) again.

Most suprising performance from an actor that has appeared in blockbuster films Anna Paquen, for her role as James Ray Steam in Steamboy. Unregonisible. Proves why she won that oscar when she was knee high to a grasshopper.

Best Casting Against Voice Type
Monica Rial for her role as Jo in Burst Angel. Normaly very high pitched and playing the younger cute female roles or children (such as Komachi in Samurai 7). But in this she takes her voice very deep and delivers a convincing performance as the sullen, uncommotive 17 year old gun fighter. Also very similar in tone and pitch to the orginal.

Best Casting With voice Type
Tress McNeille for her multipule Studio Ghibli roles in the english langauge version. The go to woman if you want a voice for a woman in her thirties or forties or a supporting player or part of an ensomble.

Best English Voice Cast
The crew from Cowboy Bepop. Slip perfectly into their respective character roles of this strange family composed of bounty hunters.

Most Consistent use of an English Voice Cast
Ghost in the Shell takes this for using the same english cast for both movies and television shows.

The where have I heard that voice before award
Every english voice artist from the studio Ghibli films. It may not twig straight away but yu are listening to that fanning girl, or agnes skinner or the latest batman.

The Actual its an Improvement Award
I detest the whiny tones of Dragon ball Z era goku's Japanese voice. Funimation's dub gave us a much better voice from Sean Schemmel. It may have been butchered and all that but they gave Goku a voice more convincing in his body.

So there it is my awards are handed out. Why don't you show your appreciation for the decent english dubs by giving out some awards.

Re: The dub awards

so this is the thread you were talking about making, decided to check it out, its interesting but its sure to cause lots of arguing. and im glad you keyed in on the change in the dbz voicing, thank god.

worst english anime dub-
without a doubt onepiece, i know you probly want this thread to be positive about american dubbing but i just had to say that.

best english voice cast-
without a doubt in my mind castle in the sky, the voice of potzu fits him so will it scares me. all of the other characters both main and minor have very fitting voices and did a very good job.

Most suprising performance from an actor that has appeared in blockbuster films-
okay, well i dont know his name, but he plays dawson in dawsons creek (hey i dont watch it dont point your finger at me, my sister does, calm down) he played the voice of potzu in castle in the sky (aka laputa) (i mentioned that before) when he was younger. i know hes in various movies and shows and he did a great voice acting job.

best blood edit in a dub-
i would say naruto, i really hate how in the uncut and in the manga theres tons of blood, too much of it, i like how in the english dub they cut out most of the blood but still kept it in there to keep it realistic.

-okay well thats all i got for now but if i think of anymore catagories and stuff ill post back, i have to go now anyway. bye

Re: The dub awards

All of mine go to animes from this year.

Out Of No Where Award:
I give this one to Yuri Lowenthal. Before he was cast has Sasuke, Yuri was pretty much an unknown in the dub community. Sure he had some major roles, but they were in anime that the mainstream audience never really knew about, then he got cast as Sasuke and became a star. So he gets my vote as an out of no where VA for this year.

Surprise VA Cast:
This one goes to Karas. Considering Manga Entertainments decline over the years it was very surprising to see that when the dub cast for Karas was announced that they got 3 Hollywood actors to do 3 of the main characters. Grated the actors weren't A or even B list actors but it is still quite an impressive feet for a compnay that lost several properties recently or any anime company for that matter.

Biggest Risk That Paid Off:
Ghost Stories gets this one. About 2 or so years ago US anime companies went through a craze of picking up any title they could get there hands on and for whatever reason ADV picked up an anime called Ghost Stories. For sometime it set on the shelf being nothing but a waste of money until that decided to do something very risky, they threw out the entire Japanese script and made one almost entirely from stratch. The base story line was kept intact but the script was for the most part ad-libbed but the VAs. This caused huge controversy but it paid off very well for ADV since the title sold very well.

That's all I can think of at this point in time.
