something interesting about 4kids

What I read from wikipedia was this: Kahn stated that the reason why One Piece was edited was to appeal to the masses. I'm sure that everyone knows that, but the masses are really the children. What is interesting, though, is that he also claims that later on, he will distribute uncut anime, but the date is unknown. This made me think: if 4Kids! does release uncut anime again, then I will respect them more, because I don't respect them at all.


But thats old news.


They don't edit for the masses, Naruto was edited for the masses, Bobobo was edited for the masses, even Zatch Bell (which had a pretty messed up dub, but not on the level of One Piece) was edited for the masses.

editing for the masses means making it suitable for tv, and 4kids goes WELL beyond what is necessary to get a show on tv.I don't see why the FCC would have a problem with labels on signs, books, and jars.....especially when they have very basic words on them.

Editing out anything shaped like a cross.....ya know I really don't think thats necessary at all because there HAVE been shows that have had cross shaped items in them before. Come on, Digimon was full of religious references! (and even that dub was heavily edited)

Pretty much all you need to do in order to get a show ready for "the masses" is edit out any innapropriate language (for the timeslot) edit out an excess blood, and remove any scene of extreme sexuality or violence.

No, 4kids doesn't edit One Piece for the masses, they edit it to thei rown personal standards of what is necessary.4kids edited Pokemon for the masses, and that dub was just fine, but One Piece......no

Al Kahn has also stated that he feels anime not only lends itself ot a child market (someone tell him about Adult Swim which is number one in its timeslot),

that manga own't sell because kids don't read (yeah, explain Naruto and Fruits Basket being on the top 100 book list of America)

that anime MUST be westernized in order for it to scueed in America (oh yeah, Naruto is doomed to failure in America because all its Japanese references were removed.....not, and has anyone showed him the rest of the Toonami lineup? or Adult Swim? or even g4's anime unleashed for that matter (which edits NOTHING))

And in regards to the uncut dvds, they're supposed to make uncut versions of ALL their anime series. HOWEVER they've only released uncut Shaman King and Yugioh, both of which they stopped making after a while for no reason.Maybe one day when 4kids is desperate for cash they'll start churning out the unedited dvds, but they feel it isn't necessary.

They know how we feel about them and their little company, but they call us "elitist anime fans" even though most of us aren't. We just want our show to not get ****ed up.(or worse)


there is hope however...


apparently, an insider at 4kids revealed that they're looking at the uncut Naruto dvds Viz is releasing.they're wondering if those will suceed or not, and maybe they'll start doing similiar things with their anime (primarily focused on One Piece.)

One Piece was such a huge failure for them (their own damn fault) that they have no idea what to do with themselves.they continue to lose money, and while One Piece could've been HUGE they chose to mess it all up.


Since they have the license for quite some time, they have 3 options:


1- fix it, once Alabasta finishes airing start making a better dub for Jaya and beyond (fix as in stop the needles edits, episode cuts, and story changes, oh and keep the old(original) music) and hope it succeeds on Toonami

2- forget about it, don't do anythign One Piece related and just wait until the license expires

3- sell One Piece to someone willing to take a risk on it and hope that whoever gets it can do some justice to it


and thus ends my rant.

i personaly hope that after the whole alabasta thing they do it uncut, but thats not like 4kids to do that, one piece go ruined by that dub, manga still rocks, but if they just stop cutting out stuff then ill watch it again, i didnt even realise they edited out words on books and jars, thats just odd, never seen that with any other dubbed anime.

I here there going to cut out the luffy vs crocadile fight or what I mean is dubbing out the good parts.

4Kids as already stated they have no intention of realeasing uncut dvds of One Piece.

Unfortunately for One Piece it is so far beyond damaged in the US that it will never reach the popularity it should...hell, it wont reach half that. Reputation is key, and 4Kids has firmly destroyed and vaporized anything positive about OP.

Which is a damn shame, considering how much better One Piece is than Naruto and Bleach (which will also experience great success when it debuts on Adult Swim).

You know what... I like this kahn guy, he's pretty smart, start em when there young, and make sure they understand everything, make it parent friendly so the kids are allowed to watch it, and when the grow older they switch to toonami or adult swim.. which is not meant to be watched by children, which is Al kahns whole mission statement, bring child safe anime to day childrens channels, not 14+ anime's, bring that stuff to the late night broadcasts, becaue older children stay up later.


If all you fans really want to see your precious uncut anime's then simply turn off your TV and get a DVD...

wow you really have a point! actualy thats very true. i got introduced to anime through dubbed card captor sakura, pokemon, digimon, and other kiddy cartoons that we hate now (except card captor sakura is still kool!) and now i watch naruto and other stuff on toonami and adult swim, its very true! so one piece is like the next generation of digimon for little kids, thats just the way it goes now, although one piece manga is still awesome!

^Well, lets say they starting redubbing now, and then showed it on toonami next year. It could actaully get the popularity it deserves if they wait long enough to air it, give people a chance to forget the horribleness of 4kids ( I odn't remember most bad shows I watch ), and that shouldn't be a prob since it takes a while to redub anyway.

Anyway, I knew Onepiece didn't do great for 4kids, but I didn't know that they LOST alot of money from it. AHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHA SERVES THEM RIGHT!

Just one problem with this, its 4Kids they dont release uncut DVDs. Hell they don't even release them with the original Japanese audio track. The DVDs of One Piece are exactly what you see on TV, a complete butcher of the original. It wouldn't be such a bad thing if the took the route Viz is doing with Naruto and releasing edited and uncut DVDs but as I mentioned 4Kids has said that they are not releasing any uncut DVDs for 4Kids.

If someone were really cagey... really smart... they'd leave it completely uncut... with the curse words in, and let the MPAA rate it 13+. No dubs, just subtitled... with the curse words in there.. maybe just softened a little to slip it by the censors.

Then preface the shows opening with some adds saying things like.

"You think you know what One Piece is? You don't know jack. This time, try watching One piece the way it was intended to be seen. In the original Japanese. All the fights (shot of luffy being shot in front of Zoro and attacking the marines), all blood (zoro and mihawk duel ending), all the action (the two giants fighting), all the adventure (Skypia arc shot of them entering heaven's gate), This isn't your typical anime...Onepiece, Rated 13+"

And in the back ground you have some of the edgier scenes... like Zoro getting slashed by Mihawk, and some of the other more violent scenes (but not the one with Bellemere getting killed... save that for later)

The kids would eat it up, I'll bet.

They'd start looking up all the curse words.. and before you know it you'd be hearing kids shouting Kuso at the playgrounds.

Yeah, you'd get some parents complaining, but so what? The draw you'd get from kids who are watching "forbidden" stuff... or stuff that hasn't been sanitized till it's lost all it's comedic or entertainment value would more than make up for it.

The Japanese and subtitles might put kids off at first... but they'd quickly learn to adapt.

The thing is... noone's really tried it. Everyone automatically thinks it would fail because they underestimate kids. They think that they're stupid.

The thing is, kids are sharper than you give them credit for... and they're really curious about stuff that stands out as different.

The problem is is that as much as everyone would love to see 4Kids release uncut One Piece they couldn't. The reason they wouldn't is becuase of the way they edited One Piece, they cut out enitre story arcs and merged episodes together. If they were to release uncut DVDs they would have to include those cut story arcs and unmerge all the episodes. The only real way uncut DVDs of One Piece would be available is if 4Kids didn't renew the licesence and another company got it.

First off, I'm beggin' any dub lover to take the time to download episode 126, read what they are REALLY saying, hear (not listen) to Luffy's voice and attitude and then go watch the dub. (your reaction can speak for itself)

Its the same idea that moisture is Croc's weakness, but not using blood makes it seem so much less dramatic. I mean technically sweat makes more sense since blood dries really fast.

BUT

The whole point of the blood was that not only is it moist and can be used against Croc, but that after being severely hurt by Croc Luffy used his injuries to fight back!

They lost the "I will surpass you!" line, and they didn't even replace it with anything good. Even "I'm better than you" would have been ok.

The New World Symphony is really what made the scene, I mean that song was soooooooo good and it really fit. 4Kids music doesn't compare AT ALL to that symphony.

What makes it worse is that the New World SYmphony isn't owned by anyone, so it could've been used without buying the original music from Toei.

Damn cheap 4Kids, for those not aware the reason they use different music is this: They don't pay the money to buy the original sound track from Toei, in addition they GET more money every time they use their own original music. So yeah, its basically all about more money for them.




Anyways, its good compared to most 4kids stuff, but its still not very good compared to most dubs, and especially not compared to the original.


For those wondering, ALL the Alabasta fights are up on youtube, as well as most of the dramatic moments in Alabasta (Pell, Vivi crying alot, etc)

There's also the Smoker/Tashigi stuff as well. Hina shows up as well, with an okay voice.
