I agree with St. Jimmy. The most obvious answer to this dilemma is that the Zelda franchise is neither in the future nor in the past. It has no relation to our own timeline. Theoretically, it could be right now, just not here -- just as Star Wars is far in the past, just not physically here.

In the end, it's a set of games. It has no relevance to our world bar entertainment value.
