I love your biased presentation of the two.
Science is based on observation and experimentation. No "open mind" involved. Just basic observation skills. Religion is based on observation and contemplation. Same basic skills involved. Only the observations are being made on completely different levels.
As such, it is self-centric biases such as this that shut out Western societies from keeping their priorities straight. People won't pay any heed to schools if they think sports are more important, just as people won't pay much heed to religion if they don't believe it's important.
