Re: A Choice of Fates
Chapter 2
A massive shining lake covered the countryside its clear surface reflecting the bright dancing colours of the sun. High mountains surrounded the entire area their summits reaching miles into the soft white clouds that hung in the sky above. The cool morning dew could still be felt around ones ankles.
A small mayfly landed atop the rippling water casually breaking its surface. The head of a silver salmon leapt out from beneath the unlucky creature dragging it down below into the icy water. Gracefully an elegant little sparrow flew over the waters surface and landed on the thick branches of a bare tree that stood on a tiny island directly in the middle of the water. A muscular winged man sat sleeping at the base of the tree.
Three long blonde plaits fell about his sleeping face and over his closed eyes. The right side of his bare chest was shaded by the shadows of the tree. His beautiful wings stretched out behind him folded over against his back but still standing at a length taller than the man himself. He wore cream trousers held up by a golden belt. Jewellery was scattered around his body, a necklace, two earrings, two bracelets.
A young woman sat on the bank of the lake gazing over at the sleeping seraph. She brushed her soft auburn hair back from her hazel eyes. A white silk sleeping robe covered her body apart from her bare hands and feet. The small sparrow flew over to her landing on her delicate shoulder. It began chirping in her ear. Much to the girl’s surprise the chirps began to change to words.
“See that man over there? He wants to meet you. Go over and talk to him.” The bird left her shoulder and disappeared back to the tiny island in the distance.
The woman lifted herself from her seat. Cautiously, she walked over to the sparkling water and dipped her toes inside. The water felt cold but refreshing against her bare skin. After pulling her toes back she placed her entire foot in.
The liquid seemed to solidify as she pressed her foot against it and held firm as it she placed the pressure of her body onto its surface. Her eyes shone with amazement, she lifted her second foot from the bank. Slowly she placed it down too. Still the water held strong. She began to pace across it towards the distant island.
Minutes passed and she didn’t seem to make any progress yet in her vision the island was becoming clearer. She could she the massive angel perfectly, his muscular chest rising up and down with each relaxed breath. He began to stir. He stopped.
The island grew suddenly closer, not much but enough so that the distant did not now seem so far. The water below the woman’s feet began to shine a gentle heat passing over it and onto the base of her feet. A soft red light was radiating up from the depths casting a dim red glow around the girl’s feet. She continued on.
Hours seemed to pass yet the island grew no closer only clearer. The woman could see every tiny feature on the angel’s face even though it lay miles and miles ahead of her. She began to long to touch that face, to feel its soft skin against her fingertips. She increased her pace. The island flickered closer again the red glow intensified, only slightly though.
The cycle continued. No progress, longing and a glimpse at wants. The red light kept growing with each passing effort by the woman.
Several more hours passed, the island looked reachable now. Through the clearness that she saw it the woman had come to know the face of the angel better than she knew her own. She wanted nothing more than to reach him. The island flicked closer. The light grew completely covering the woman’s body.
The crimson light erupted into flames dancing and licking at the woman’s frail body. Terrified she looked over at the angel. The entire island remained untouched. She began to run towards it.
Faster and faster she ran but it came no closer. Faster and faster she ran but she could not escape the fire. Faster and faster she ran but she could not reach the angel. Faster and faster she ran but no matter how fast she ran she could do nothing.
A cruel laugh broke the silence. It grew louder and louder and louder and louder becoming everything and all. She could she the laughter surrounding her. She could feel the laughter touching her. The only thing other than laughter was the angel. She jumped towards him.
The angel’s eyes opened wide, quickly his wings burst open and launched him towards the woman. The gust of air as he rocketed forward broke the laughter shattering it into a thousand pieces. He flew between the flames finally reaching the jumping woman. Effortlessly he caught her light frame within his arms. Their eyes met; the blue and hazel.
The laughter began again. It enveloped the angel clutching at his throat. He brought his hands up to his neck trying to free it from the laughter. The woman fell from his grasp. She fell further and further and further through the darkness, the dieing angel disappearing from her view. Darkness was all around her.
