Name: Jhans Frenn (Shaanz Fren)
Age: 49
Race: Panserbjørne [Singular - Panserbjørn] (Large armored bear with hands like man's.)
Sex: Male
Hair: White (I know that polar bear's fur is technically green. Bleh.)
Eyes: Ice blue.
Weight: 1,800 lbs (2,400 with armour on)
Height 10.2 foot, nose to tail. 5.7 foot paw to spine.
Theme music; Braveway
Weapon: Teeth. Long, sharp, 3-inch predator teeth. Claws. Long. Predator'a claws. Jet black predator's claws. Firmly attacked to the bear's gauntlets are claw brackets -- made from an iron/titanium alloy. These have four eight-inch stylized claws each, blade sharpened to a lethal edge so that when swung in an arc or in a punch, Jhans' paw can easily tear through whatever meets it.
Also: A Large, Runic, bear-king maul. Lump of ancient stone on a wooden rod which he slings over one shoulder. has the bear rune (Ice) scratched on the side, letting through the blue glow from within. Seal-skin is wrapped around the handle, and two long, thin threads tail off this. He keeps this on a seal-skin strap, slung across his back.
Armor: Rusty-red armour. Made from a dull, brownish metal -- immensely strong and heavy meteoric iron, which is strengthened massively by being superheated when falling through the earth's atmosphere, and then cooled abruptly by being plunged into the arctic waters. Comes in plates down the arms, with large plates covering the back of the paws. Overlapping, dinner-plate sized armor covers his back, with a huge breastplate on the front. Leather belts tie the back and the front together. This armor is exposed to dents round the elbows, shoulders and neck -- dent his neck plates & his head will be jammed at a odd angle... forcing him to remove his neck armor. Removes his amour for stealth anyway. Well-oiled.
Strengths: Jhans is immensely strong. He can bend sheets of iron in his hands. Armour. Very good defense. Is able to make any kind of thing with metal. He is very good at hunting seals - as you may expect. Has brute strength - an immense Polar bear. Great sense of smell. All polar bears have. Good swimmer... and the instinct of a mighty hunting animal. His thought patterns are estranged to humans, so he cannot be easily tricked. He fights ferociously and mercilessly.
Weakness: Susceptible to heat. Fights best in a chest freezer -_-'. Normal room temperature is too much for him - fights outside whenever possible. Jhans is also slow, large and heavy, and expects his enemies to think like he does.
Jhans has obtained a magic bracer which stops him from being affected by heat.
Skills/Magic: A polar bear's instinct. Skilled in a kind of martial fighting with claws (Skraelyn). When he was guarding the prince, he was taught how to use a Runic hammer. This is an heirloom of the royal line - used to lead the soldiers into war. When it is swung, it leaves a blue trail in the air, off the runes -- which glow strangely, like candlelight through water. One rune on each side, like some kind of ancient dice.
Jhans obtained this from the corpse of t prince -- he doesn't know its origins. It is just a stone on a stick, but the air after it cools amazingly. Swing in the pond before you, and you have ice. If you are hit with the rock, you get hit by a rock. you get hit by the trail, you get hit by Antarctica. He has the ice hammer and the insignia of his kingship around his neck.
Ah... the symbol. He is (Was) the guard of the prince. He was loyal to the monarch. This symbol has a power over all the old king's subjects, and other kings alike. The whole of the northern world always is aware of the bear people. They ally themselves with whomever comes - and can be a warring species. The pendant reminds Jhans who he is, and what injustices have been done unto him. It has power over many -- especially those associated with the bears in some way. It holds
influence -- it is only given to those in positions of utmost influence in the bear nations -- the strongest, perhaps, in the known world.
Personality: Some what gruff - yet majestic in a rag-tag kind of way. He is understanding. He speaks with great sense. He treats his friends with great respect. He has trouble speaking of his past... He believes of valor and nobility. He has strong beliefs. He spends hours alone - and greets new people with an uncaring attitude. But it is sometimes necessary to bend the truth - 'You don't get points for playing fair.' He will shed blood simply and with no regret.
He doesn't like saying things that will upset people... but sometimes he must do so. Life's like that. He feels that if a man (Bear) spots something wrong in the world - he should do something about it. It won't sort itself out. He takes things upon himself. The universe, he feels, is his responsibility. He may end up working himself to death working for what is right. He speaks in a low, rumbling but intelligent voice - capable of showing some expression - but not much. Polar bears don't go in for all that. Likes sushi. Deep. He prefers to contemplate in silence than blabber out loud.
Appearance: Glossy, immense. (
This is
really the wrong idea) Polar bear
- small by Panserbjørne standards - , rust-red overlapping plates form his armor, with a large, whole breast plate. He can stand on his hind legs, easily. His armor is characteristic - two large, arched, curved metal eyebrows arch over his eyes - while a coned muzzle can be attached during battle.
Bright blue, intelligent eyes blaze at you. A large, sealskin cover encases the maul to stop the cold from penetrating. The armor has a pattern on it - of copper vein, with a steel rune on each plate. He is as human as a polar bear can get.
Around his right foreleg, there is a temperature bracer. It looks like a scuffed silver ring, thick and large enough to fit comfortably around his leg.
History:
Svalbard, the arctic circle. Home of the armoured bear nations. The eighteen houses of bear living some scores of thousands strong.
The house of Frenn: Dwindling. The last in line, with a she-bear from the house of Aawken had one son. As his parents died, Jhans Frenn -- last of the house of Frenn -- was sent to be initiated into the king's family group, to be nurtured and grow strong as to continue the line.
So Jhans grew as a guard bear of Svalbard, he grew up in the same relative luxury as the prince. He almost lived the prince's life, as he was his personal guard and companion. It was unlikely that Inled, the prince, would ever get a sniff at the throne as he had two elder brothers. Humans came from far & wide to speak to the king -- Jhans learned much through sitting through the meetings, people so keen to hold friends with this sleeping power in the north.
He was trained in combat, and went to his first war in his new armor -- which he forged himself over many months. (The same set as today - Panserbjørne keep the armor until the day they die - and then it is taken to the king's halls when the bear has been burned). It was an easy battle and a forgone conclusion to some foolish invaders, but both the king and his first two sons were overwhelmed with their foe's superior numbers on a surprise attack on the front flank.
When Jhans returned from the war at 19, with his charge & Kilrn (The new crown prince),
another bear opposed his rule. This offender was Fritjof. He was from the line of Theoder... the crown Theoder would take the throne if the King had no sons, or to look after the nation until the sons came of age. Fritjof was aging, and had had enough of waiting. He was... humanlike in his ways. Expressive, spiteful at times. He drank excessively, and had his foot brought to him by his housecarles. he was summoned, as head of the house of theoder to join the consul of bears -- who would decide what to do about crowning Inled.
And then, one day, he saw his chance. Inled was dealing with a diseased freebear, who'd been found on the plains near the post-war encampment seeing the damage, Inled kindly and swiftly slit the bear's through.
Fritjof saw this, and screamed murder.
And the world fell from beneath their feet.
Inled was sent away to the furthest reaches Fritjof could send him to, then the bear seized the throne, dismissing all the former royal consulates, and forming his own. And the finger of blame needed someone to point at. Jhans Frenn, guard of the prince -- there when the murder happened and who should have known better... he was exiled. Stripped of his position and sent to live on the fringe of the human world.
He found himself alone in a despicable part of the world, far away form Svalbard where Fritjof turned the bears into an engine of war. He was fueled by unbearlike things -- greed, envy and lust for power. But the bears remained steadfastly obedient and loyal to him. It's something that's drummed in from the start -- power in numbers. Do not cause trouble. Do not be exiled. Together we are invincible, alone we are a target. Respect your elders.
Over many years, the reports of a massive fortress being constructed reached Jhans ears -- and tales of another bear -- Inled, Jhans presumed, living alone on the eastern fringes of Svalbard's ice sheets.
And so Jhans gave up what little he had -- tools he'd salvaged and finery he'd found when raking through the human rubbish pits -- to buy passage back to Svalbard. The sailors avoided him, and he was not offered a share of the meal of muton and venison. From there, he spent a whole year scanning the eastern ice sheets -- searching for the sight, or smell, of bear. These were formidable areas of land -- many a time Jhans nearly lost his life to a blizzard or crushed by a snowfall.
And then he found the carcass. A rotting fist, gauntleted. The royal mark of the House of Clayton on the shipad. Jhans burnt the body -- which had been killed by a bear-bite to the back of the neck. He had died in combat, and not given his final rites. Anger burned within him.
Jhans took the royal symbol and the Prince's ice-maul, and left the armor standing in a cave, having welded the joints still -- as is the custom. The hall of the
true king, he thought.
And now, with no hope of proving the true heir's innocence and restoring him to the throne, Jhasn wanted nothing more than to leave the country which had betrayed him and run south -- maybe to the fringes of ice to the furthest south of the world.
He tried to leave many a time, but Fritjof rules ferociously, and the traders stopped coming to Svalbard -- there were no boats to escape from except those being constructed under the command of the new fortress of granite, blocking the way through to the bear lands from the south.
Jhans hunted seal on the eastern fringe of Svalbard, smashing a hole in the ice and diving through -- searching for the silver, greasy flickering of tail or fin. Having spent a long time underwater looking for seal in the icy currents, he approached the hole he came in by -- a flickering mote of sunlight. He had dived further than he thought -- it was in desperation that he reached the surface, panting.
And suddenly he was surrounded by humans, who leaped on him and burnt his flesh and shackled his claws and muzzled his maw. Then they pushed this sharp-smelling cloth before his nose, and the world ceased to make sense.
He spend what felt like forever being dragged through the dark in a sack by a cart, followed by a period with the rocking of a boat, followed again by the rattlings of road travel. His face was muzzled and his limbs bound, he could not begin to fight back. The sunlight came three weeks later, he was tied to a wooden cross in a slave-arena. Some northern novelty, up for sale in the market of service. but they should have known better. He splintered the post, and massacred the guards -- running out into the dome.
And Jhans found himself surrounded by warriors and people of every profession. After some exploration, he found the doorways in the dome lead to... every conceivable place. And as tales of spreading bear conquest spreading from the North, he slowly hatches a plan. Bears are loyal to their king, they don't care who the king is. Gather an army. Remove Fritjof. Essentially, waging war on his own kind.
But he'll need money, and influence, and friends. And no-one's going to appear to help him. But the army of the bear nations is the most strictly-disciplined and ferocious in the world. They may
have to, before this is over.
Update; Grey.
Jhans was distinctly against animals keeping other animals. Humans, who keep dog and mule - nymphs who farm fish. So, from when Jhans took the egg from a nest on the way back from the Altari mountain range (See Field Trip) - he swore that the falcon would be his equal and nothing less. Jhans climbed so high that his breath frosted on his fur and the stars shined at his back, despite it being day - and there, in a nest made of stones was an egg. It looked like it was made from marble, catching the light and shining it back like it was filled with a million tiny glisters of brilliance.
Just a companion. Hmm.
The bird perches nearby - tearing apart a vole. It is about a foot and a half tall, and a falcon - with golden eyes and a peppered grey-black clock of feathers. His wings fold out, seeming to double in breadth, and opened its curved beak. It calls out like a shrill echo, reflecting the call of some creature against a cold, stone wall. And so Grey flies up and circles Jhans, waiting for another prey.
