I doubt Nintendo is here to depress us. I can almost guarantee that they're going for the same 'ol Joseph Campbell Hero's Journey as usual. If that's the case, remember that a little dark imagery might spice up a happy ending. As I said in my last post, these games can handle darker themes without alienating the audience. Do not judge a game by its rating.
