Lyra v. 2.0

Name: Lyra

Age: 16

Race: Hylian

Sex: Female

Hair: Lyra’s hair is a light auburn, resembling a light red more than a light brown. Her hair is very thick and wavy, more often than not frizzy and uncontrollable. In an attempt to tame her hair, Lyra keeps it up in a messy ponytail a majority of the time. When in its ponytail, her hair reaches the middle of her back. Wisps of hair often escape from her ponytail, falling in front of her face and obscuring her eyes.

Eyes: Lyra’s eyes are a light blue with dark green specks mixed in.

Weight: Approximately 105 pounds.

Height: A bit more than 5 feet

Weapon: Lyra’s weapon is an old longsword. Although it looks awkwardly large in comparison to her body, she manages to use it decently enough. The blade, although scarred from past battles, is still sharp. The hilt is wrapped by rough leather, allowing the user to maintain a good grip on it. The scabbard, which hangs from the belt on her waist, is also old, although it can still protect the blade.

This sword, an heirloom from Lyra’s family, originally belonged to her father. However, she “permanently borrowed” it from him (see bio for more information).

Armor: Lyra has light silver body armor that is resistant to fire. However, she does not like to wear it unless she is in battle.

Strengths: Lyra’s skills with the sword are decent enough to enable her survival. Her stubbornness allows her to fight no matter what. Also, due to her petite frame, she can sneak around easily without being detected and run very fast. She is very courageous, never backing down from a challenge and tries to help those who truly need help. Because of her long Hylian ears, she has excellent hearing. She also has the uncanny ability to predict the weather a day or so before it occurs.

Weakness: Although she has the muscles of a swordsman, Lyra cannot push or move anything of incredible size due to her tiny frame and young age. Her pride, however, prevents her from asking for help, oftentimes leading to more trouble than needed. She looses her patience very easily, becoming easily irritated with most people. She also tends to act before thinking about the consequences of her actions. In addition, Lyra is nearsighted, unable to see anything further than a few yards away without squinting (she is far too prideful to buy herself glasses).

When in battle, water will extinguish the magic attack that she knows with her sword.

Skills/Magic: Because of her connection with fire, Lyra can use simple fire magic without a weapon, such as flicking sparks at people or making small fireballs. However, to use stronger spells, she needs a weapon into which she can channel her power.

Fire Blade: With this attack, Lyra can use fire magic to make her sword encased in fire. Because it uses Lyra's energy, she'll only use this attack for a short amount of time. Water will force the fire to go out.

Fire Thrust: After building up her energy, Lyra can force the fire from her blade to her opponent. This uses a great deal of energy, and she rarely uses it.

Appearance: Although beautiful wouldn’t usually be a word used to describe Lyra, she is not ugly either. She has a very athletic build, with a skinny frame that can move quickly and lithely. She has a small oval-shaped face. Her eyes are a somewhat wide set, her small, slightly-upturned nose set equally between them. Freckles are splattered liberally over her nose and under her eyes, and her skin has a light golden-brown color to it. Her ears are long and pointed due to her Hylian ancestry.

Lyra’s shirt, light blue in color, is slightly loose on her and made of a lightweight material. Although it is slightly wrinkled, it looks clean and has no stains on it. The sleeves end just below her elbows, and there is some white embroidery near the edge of the cloth. Over her shirt she wears an unbuttoned light brown vest, upon which is a breast pocket on the left side. The vest is just a little longer than her shirt.

Lyra’s pants are dark brown and extend to just below her knees. There are pockets near the waistline and pockets near the bottom of the pants, in which she holds a variety of items, depending on what she needs to carry with her. A leather belt wraps around her waist, holding up her slightly-baggy pants; her sword also hangs from this belt. Her boots, also a dark brown, reach to the bottom of her knees, meeting the end of her pants. Although stained with years of use, the boots are sturdy.

She carries with her a large brown knapsack, in which she holds the items she deems necessary: a waterproof box which holds her maps and a booklet which contains her notes, money, food (when she can get some), a book that contains a collections of myths and stories from her land, an extra change of clothes, and a cloak. She carries this bag over her shoulder.

Personality: Lyra is a very solitary person. She is not shy: she just doesn’t like people. She is independent and prideful, stubbornly refusing help when offered. She prefers fixing her own problems, even if is would be easier to ask someone else for help; when she does ask for help, it is with reluctance that she does so, and only when necessary. She is short-tempered, often saying harsh words without thinking how the recipient will respond to them. She doesn’t usually talk until someone speaks to her, and when she does speak, her words are filled with cynicism and sarcasm. While she won’t object to a physical fight, she prefers to fight with words rather than with a sword. Her mind works quickly, especially under stressful situations.

Biography: Lyra was born to a wealthy merchant family who lived on Windfall Island. Her father traveled throughout the Great Sea on his ship, selling his products to the people on the various islands, while her mother remained at home and managed the household.

For the first few years of her life, Lyra lived with her mother at their house on Windfall. Her mother, who disapproved of the public schooling offered on the island, provided private tutors for her daughter in an attempt to mold her into a proper woman. However, Lyra proved to be a rebellious child, oftentimes skipping her lessons to play with the children of Windfall or escape from her mother’s scrutinizing gaze. In an attempt to “civilize” her daughter, Lyra’s mother forced her daughter to interact with some of the more affluent families’ children; this did not result in very much success.

Lyra was always fascinated by the ocean and always wanted to explore it; she thought that her father was an explorer, rather than a merchant, and begged him to take her countless times. Each time, her mother intervened and refused to let her join her father. However, just before Lyra turned eight, her father managed to convince her mother to let Lyra accompany him, explaining that since Lyra would inherit the business one day, she needed to know what to do to prepare for it.

As soon as her father’s ship set said, Lyra fell in love with the ocean. Her father, noting his daughter’s feelings, gave her a sea chart and explained that no one could be a real explorer without a map to guide him – or her. He did this to humor his daughter, but Lyra took his words seriously, often imagining herself as a famous explorer.

Although at first, the crew was unhappy with the idea of a little girl running around the ship, they eventually warmed up to her and even taught her snippets of information. Some of the sailors were knowledgeable in the ways of sword fighting, and when Lyra learned of this, she begged them to teach her. The sailors reluctantly agreed to teach her in secrecy, knowing her parents wouldn’t approve of the lessons.

To their surprise, Lyra learned quickly, due to her intense interest in the subject. They managed to teach her the basics before her father discovered the secret lessons. Although he could see his daughter was passionate about sword fighting, he had to ban her from them, sending her off to Windfall to be with her mother.

There, Lyra’s mother did everything possible to prevent her daughter from practicing with a sword. However, the little girl managed to swipe a practice sword from one of the sailors before she left the ship, and every night after being sent to bed, she would review the lessons that she had been taught, adding little flairs of her own in the process. Although her style was unconventional, she continued practicing in that manner, having no one to teach her otherwise.

When she was eleven, her parents allowed her to join her father once more, on the condition that she didn’t reinstate her sword fighting lessons. Although she agreed to this, she quickly broke her promise and snuck down with the sailors every other night, improving her skills under their trained eyes.

A few months before her twelfth birthday, her father received a letter from her mother stating that she was pregnant. Lyra’s father quickly turned the ship around and returned to Windfall Island, where the family remained until the baby was born.

Months later, Lyra’s mother gave birth to a healthy baby boy. This child, named Joshua, would one day inherit the family business instead of Lyra. This struck a hard blow to Lyra, since her father had told her that she would run the business one day. As she looked at her baby brother, she couldn’t help but feel jealous of the newborn, who had taken away her goal in life. Now, the only thing that she could do with her life was marry well.

Unable to deal with the card fate had dealt her, she prepared to run away. Although she was ignorant of the world around her, she felt it was the only thing left to do. She saved up her money, waiting for the opportune moment to run away. As if on cue, two girls from Windfall disappeared. It was said they were kidnapped due to having long ears, much like the ones Lyra had.

Taking advantage of this situation, she snuck into her father’s office and took the sword that hung on the mantle above his desk. She had looked at that sword for years, admiring it, and knew that one day it would be hers. After taking that which she believed was rightfully hers, she ran away, stealing a small sailboat in the process.

Although it took her a while to adjust to living on her own, she soon preferred this way of living over her old life. She was the one in control, and that suited her just fine. While traveling, she searched for people who knew how to fight with a sword, hoping to find a teacher. She found very few people with this knowledge; the ones she did find, however, taught her much more than the sailors ever could have taught her.

At the age of sixteen, after four years of wandering around the Great Sea, she stumbled upon a place known as The Dome, where she was put under the tutelage of many great teachers. She improved drastically as a fighter and as a person, and her time there was well spent.
