Re: Favorite Board Game

My favorite board games? Well I'll give you my favorite top ten:

1. Settlers of Catan: The first time I played this game was a little more than a year ago, and boy is it fun. It isn't a well known game (at least I don't think it is), but if any of you get the chance, take it, you will not be disappointed. Pretty much the game is about, you are a settler (of Catan) and you have to build your own town, make it into a city, build roads, and try to become the most successful city at the end by collecting and trading brick, sheep, coal, wood, and other necessaties(sp?)

2. Stratego: I haven't played this game in a long long time. To put it simply, you are a general of an army of soldiers ranking from 1-10 (I believe). The higher the rank (1 being the best) the better. The object of the game is to cross enemy lines, defeat the enemy, and capture the opponent's flag before he capture's yours.

3. Risk: I learned about Risk after I've played Stratego for awhile. Everyone knows the basis of this game. Control your army, defeat others, and conquer the world. Great game if you want to practice ruling the world in the mid 20th century.

4. Chess: The king of games (no not Yu-gi-oh). If you haven't noticed so far, I love strategy games and this one would have to be the most famous of them all. Favorite game pieces? I know it may sound cliché but I like the Knight and the Queen. Those two are clearly the most powerful game pieces (excluding the most important one of course) in my honest opinion. I could never beat the computer (that is how I learned to play) but it challenged me and help me be a better strategist against other human players.

5. Battleship: "You sunk my Battleship!"...I don't know why the battleship gets so much praise. My favorite ship was the destroyer (for some reason, it was harder for my sisters to find it...so it was my good luck charm).

6. Dominoes: No not the kind that you build them up and knock them down. The kind that you sorta make a snake-like pathway (think of it like "go fish"). I'm sure many of you have played this game too, so no need in describing how to play it.

7. Life: Ah, here's another great family game that I haven't played in a long long time. Going to college, getting a job, get married, have twins, get stock, and then get retired. Apparently that's "Life". One thing that my parents disagreed with the game was the retirement home (most latino families don't put their elders in homes, they just live with the family members).

8. Checkers: One of the first strategy games nearly every child plays (and it's one of the oldest. It's been dated back to the times of the "Arabian Nights"). Just saying "King me" is satisfying enough. Not much of a strategy game, but it's a great starter (like I already mentioned). But it does make you learn that "Sometimes you have to sacrifice to be able to win". So essentially you have to lose a little to gain a lot. The only big tip I can give you is this: Never move the four end pieces (the ones for "King me" of course) unless it's your only resort, or you are very very confident enough that victory is yours.

9. Reversi: To be quite honest, I've never played this game on a board game (eventhough I know it is one), but I've played it on the computer. This is one of the only games that I can actually beat the computer at (other than checkers). The basis of the game is pretty much this: Try to fill up the board with as many as your colored game pieces. Of course the rules are more complicated than that, but I still have one more game to explain about.

10. Mancala: In general, I haven't played a board game in a long time (the last time I did was about eight months ago playing checkers), but this would have to be the longest. What first attracted me to this game were all the pretty beads. Eventhough I usually lose to my opponent in this game, I can't help but try and try again.
